Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The legendary knight Ser Duncan the Tall described the cause of the Blackfyre Rebellions this way: "Some old dead king gave a sword to one son instead of another, that was the start of it". What was the name of that "old dead king"?

Answer: Aegon IV, the Unworthy

Aegon IV was the eleventh Targaryen king. Considered one of the worst kings of Westeros, Aegon could not control his urges, such as gluttony and lust. As a result, many illegitimate children were born to him, including Daemon Waters, whom Aegon personally knighted when he was twelve years old and bestowed upon him the ancestral sword of House Targaryen, Blackfyre. Daemon's martial prowess and popularity resulted in most of the great knights of the realm following him, when he tried to usurp his brother's throne.

Information comes from "The Mystery Knight" and "The World of Ice and Fire".
2. When Daemon Blackfyre attempted to usurp the throne, his two most close supporters were Ser Quentyn Ball, the master-at-arms of the Red Keep and Ser Aegor Rivers, one of the Great Bastards. By what nickname is Rivers popularly known as?

Answer: Bittersteel

Aegor Rivers was the son of King Aegon IV the Unworthy and Lady Barba Bracken. For his personal sigil, he adopted the red stallion of Bracken, but added black wings on it and had it snorting flames. Aegor was quickly irritated, perhaps due to his Bracken blood. Perhaps the most staucnh Blackfyre supporter, he fled to Essos after the suppression of the First Blackfyre rebellion, where he founded the Golden Company, a legendary mercenary company. The Company's words, in honor of their founder, are "Beneath the gold, the bitter steel".

Information comes from "The World of Ice and Fire".
3. In 196 AC, the First Blackfyre rebellion erupted and many battles were fought, mainly in the Westerlands and the Reach. Where was the decisive battle fought?

Answer: Redgrass Field

The battle was a victory for House Targaryen. Daemon Blackfyre himself was killed by archers commanded by Lord Brynden Rivers, who was known as Bloodraven and was another of the Great Bastards. During the battle, Bloodraven and Bittersteel fought against each other, in a duel that left Bloodraven blind from one eye but resulted in Bittersteel fleeing.

Information comes from "The World of Ice and Fire".
4. Years after the failed First rebellion, one of Daemon Blackfyre's sons, also named Daemon, travelled secretly to Westeros and attempted to rouse all those who still sympathized with the Blackfyres and gather them at the castle Whitewalls, supposedly to attend the wedding of Lord Ambrose Butterwell to the daughter of Lord Frey. Under what false name did Daemon Blackfyre travel to Westeros?

Answer: John the Fiddler

The organizers of the plot were lords Tommard Heddle and Gormon Peake while, for unknown reason, Bittersteel did not support the plot and did not give Daemon the sword Blackfyre, which his father had wielded. Unfortunately for them, the King's Hand, Brynden Rivers, was informed of the plot and promptly marched against Whitewalls with an army. The Blackfyre loyalists surrendered and Daemon was taken prisoner.

Information comes from "The Mystery Knight" and "The World of Ice and Fire".
5. Some years after their second failure, the Blackfyres made another attempt to seize the Iron Throne. Yet, they still failed, Haegon Blackfyre was killed and Ser Aegor Rivers was taken captive. What did the royal court decide to do with him?

Answer: They had him join the Night's Watch.

Although Bittersteel was forced to join the Night's Watch, the ship transporting him to Eastwatch-by-the Sea was attacked by pirates and he was freed. This proved that still the Blackfyres had some supporters in the royal court and that their plotting would continue to plague the realm.

Information comes from "The World of Ice and Fire".
6. The Blackfyres reappeared in 233 AC, after the death of King Maekar I Targaryen, when a Great Council was called in order to decide who would be king. Among those who pressed their claim, there was Aenys Blackfyre. However, upon arriving at King's Landing, Aenys was seized by royal guards and killed. Who was the Hand of the King that had ordered his demise?

Answer: Brynden Rivers

Although there was reasoning in Rivers' decision, he had broken the sacred laws of hospitality, making him a criminal. Rivers argued that he had sacrificed his personal honor for the good of the realm, but the new King, Aegon V, had him join the Night's Watch. There, he rose rapidly in the ranks, becoming Lord Commander, but disappeared in a ranging beyond the Wall.

Information comes from "The World of Ice and Fire".
7. After the death of Aenys Blackfyre, his kinsmen and Bittersteel started preparing for war and invaded Westeros in 236 AC, but they were again defeated and their claimant king, Daemon III, was killed by a legendary Kingsguard knight. Which one?

Answer: Ser Duncan the Tall

Ser Duncan the Tall was originally a hedge knight, whose squire was none other than Prince Aegon, who would later become King Aegon V, under the nickname "Egg". Duncan is considered to be one of the greatest knights ever and the slaying of Daemon III Blackfyre is counted among his deeds. Duncan perished along with King Aegon in the Tragedy of Summerhall, when the King had attempted to hatch a dragon egg using the treacherous substance known as wildfire.

Information comes from "The World of Ice and Fire".
8. After their fourth failure and the death of Aegor Rivers shortly afterwards, the Blackfyre cause withered. Yet, it was reinvigorated when a certain Blackfyre and eight other outlaws formed a coalition known as the Band of Nine. Who was this Blackfyre?

Answer: Maelys I

Maelys I Blackfyre was called "The Monstrous", due to his strength and his ferocious personality. It is said that he became a kinslayer two times in his life: once unwillingly, when he consumed his twin in his mother's womb and once willingly, when he killed his cousin for the command of the Golden Company.

Information comes from "The World of Ice and Fire".
9. When the new Blackfyre threat became eminent, King Jaehaerys II Targaryen decided to attack the Blackfyres in Essos, rather than waiting to be attacked. Whom did he appoint as commander of his armies?

Answer: Ormund Baratheon

Ormund Baratheon was the son of Lord Lyonel Baratheon, who was known as "The Laughing Storm". He served as Hand of the King for King Jaehaerys II and, since the King was not a warlike man, he assumed command of the royal army against the Band of Nine. However, Lord Ormund was killed in combat by Maelys Blackfyre. His grandson, Robert, would be the one who led the Rebellion that overthrew the Targaryens from the Iron Throne.

Information comes from "The World of Ice and Fire".
10. Despite the death of their commander, the royal armies were finally victorious and the last Blackfyre usurper was killed. Which famed knight slew him in single combat?

Answer: Barristan Selmy

Barristan Selmy later rose to a position in the Kingsguard. Perhaps his most famous accomplishment was the rescue of King Aerys II Targaryen, aka the Mad King, from the dungeons of the Darklyns of Duskendale, who were holding him captive. During Robert's Rebellion, he fought for the Targaryens and was severely wounded in the Battle of the Trident, but Robert, in a display of generosity, had his personal maester treat Selmy's wounds.
