George R.R. Martin Trivia Questions

1. The legendary knight Ser Duncan the Tall described the cause of the Blackfyre Rebellions this way: "Some old dead king gave a sword to one son instead of another, that was the start of it". What was the name of that "old dead king"?

From Quiz
The Reds and the Blacks

Answer: Aegon IV, the Unworthy

Aegon IV was the eleventh Targaryen king. Considered one of the worst kings of Westeros, Aegon could not control his urges, such as gluttony and lust. As a result, many illegitimate children were born to him, including Daemon Waters, whom Aegon personally knighted when he was twelve years old and bestowed upon him the ancestral sword of House Targaryen, Blackfyre. Daemon's martial prowess and popularity resulted in most of the great knights of the realm following him, when he tried to usurp his brother's throne. Information comes from "The Mystery Knight" and "The World of Ice and Fire".

2. The Dance began as a succession crisis following the death of a Targaryen king. Which one?

From Quiz The Blacks and the Greens

Answer: Viserys I

Viserys I was the fifth Targaryen king, reigning from 103 to 129 AC. Although the Seven Kingdoms prospered during his reign, the first seeds of the civil war that would follow were planted as well. Viserys' first wife was Aemma Arryn and their only child that survived infancy was Princess Rhaenyra. However, after the death of Queen Aemma, Viserys was enamored with Alicent Hightower and they got married. Alicent gave Viserys four children, including princes Aegon (who would later become King Aegon II) and Aemond. Princess Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent despised each other, because both wanted to be First Lady of the Realm. Information comes from "The Princess and the Queen" and "The World of Ice and Fire".

3. Name the character in chapter 1 who said, "Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?"

Rickard died in King's Landing in the year 283 AC under orders of the Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen.
