Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Crazed Captain. Cetacean. Queequeg. Which book contains all these elements?

Answer: Moby Dick

This is a nineteenth century novel by Herman Melville. It is based on an actual event.
2. Lightning scar. Sorted into Gryffindor. Quidditch. Can you select the right book from those below?

Answer: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

This book (also released with the author's original title 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone) has elements of Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist, but it isn't nearly as grim.

The first of JK Rowling's Harry Potter series, this book introduced us to all the major characters and fascinating elements like all flavor jelly beans and Nearly Headless Nick.
3. Orphan. More, please. Fagin. Which book brings these three clues together?

Answer: Oliver Twist

This book by Charles Dickens was made into a musical back in 1960. The musical was made into a film eight years later.
4. Admirable father. Small Southern town. Racism. It's not a sin to select the title of the book containing all of these elements.

Answer: To Kill a Mockingbird

Harper Lee did not complete a second book until 2015. That book is now understood to actually be the first draft of this novel.
5. Ghost. Revenge. Denmark. In what play are these clues "to be?"

Answer: Hamlet

Hamlet's father's ghost was originally played by Shakespeare. Although it isn't a large part, many great actors have given it life (after death): John Gielgud, Brian Blessed, Paul Scofield among others.
6. Adam. Eve. Snake. Where will you find these folks, if you can consider a snake "folk", which in this instance you can?

Answer: Genesis

Ah yes, here's the old excuse for suppressing half of the human race, and an explanation for why most of us don't like snakes.

There are two slightly different accounts of humanity's creation in Genesis - Genesis 1:1-2:3 and Genesis 2:4-2:24, which relate the Adam and Eve story.
7. Child sacrifice. Self sacrifice. Contest. Which dystopian young adult novel will you find these clues in?

Answer: The Hunger Games

SuzanneCollins wrote "The Hunger Games" in part based on a Greek myth about Athenians having to sacrifice their children to the Minotaur as punishment for the death of a king's son.

This book is the first of three. It was made into a 2012 movie.
8. Florida. Fawn. Hunger. Which 20th century novel has all these elements?

Answer: The Yearling

One of my favorite books, it was made into a movie starring the same brilliant actor as in "To Kill a Mockingbird", the versatile Gregory Peck.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's classic tale of a pioneer family was a NY Times bestseller for 23 weeks. It was also a Pulitzer Prize winner in 1939.
9. Passion. Vengeance. Moors. Which dark book do these clues indicate?

Answer: Wuthering Heights

Emily Bronte, the sister of the author of "Jane Eyre", is this book's author. It was her only novel and she published it under the pen name Ellis Bell.

Heathcliff is sometimes considered the quintessential romantic hero but his horrible behavior to everyone but his beloved Cathy marks him as an anti-hero before they became popular.
10. Aging portrait concealed. Hedonism. Advancing cruelty. Name the book that fits these clues.

Answer: The Picture of Dorian Gray

This is the only novel written by Oscar Wilde. He was famous for his short stories and plays.
