Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What book is actually an epic poem written by the 17th century poet John Milton?

Answer: Paradise Lost

Milton also wrote a sequel called "Paradise Regained." I made up the other three titles.
2. Which book by Daniel Keyes features a man who goes from being developmentally challenged to becoming a certified genius?

Answer: Flowers for Algernon

This book was eventually made into a movie as well. "Of Mice and Men" is by John Steinbeck, "Einstein's Dreams" is by Alan Lightman. "You Shall Know Our Velocity!" is by Dave Eggers.
3. This book by Yann Martel follows the story of a young boy who is lost at sea.

Answer: Life of Pi

Yann Martel has lived in Alaska, Spain, France, British Columbia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Ontario, and studied philosophy at Trent University. I made up the alternate answers.
4. This children's book by Natalie Babbitt about a family who lives forever was made into a movie in 2002.

Answer: Tuck Everlasting

Jean Stafford of The New Yorker said of the book, "A fearsome and beautifully written book that can't be put down or forgotten." Again, the other titles are non-existent, to my knowledge.
5. Which future-minded novel by Aldous Huxley has been grouped with books like "1984" and "Fahrenheit 451"?

Answer: Brave New World

The title for this novel comes from Shakespeare's "The Tempest," during Miranda's speech in Act 5. "Animal Farm" is by George Orwell; the others are fake.
6. Fyodor Dostoevsky wrote this novel about a man who commits murder and then becomes seriously ill.

Answer: Crime and Punishment

"The Idiot" is another Dostoevsky novel, "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina" are by Leo Tolstoy.
7. Another children's book that has stayed with me is this story about two sisters by Katherine Paterson.

Answer: Jacob Have I Loved

This title comes from a verse in the Bible, in the Old Testament referring to Isaac's two children, Jacob and Esau. The other three are also favorites of mine from childhood. "Strider," is by Beverly Cleary; "Holes" and "Sideways Stories" are both by Louis Sachar.
8. Everyone will roll their eyes to see this one in here, but it has to be done. Which Shakespeare play features a (relatively) young man dealing with the death of his father?

Answer: Hamlet

Many of our modern cliches come from this play, including "every dog has his day." The other three plays are also by Shakespeare.
9. This might be cheating a little, but this collection deserves a slight bending of the rules. Which Southern-American author is known for her disturbing and unforgettable short stories?

Answer: Flannery O'Connor

Toni Morrison is the author of books such as "Beloved" and "The Bluest Eye." Sandra Cisneros wrote "The House on Mango Street." Caryl Churchill is a playwright whose work includes "Top Girls," and "Cloud Nine."
10. This extremely long novel by George Eliot about a virtuous woman and her elderly husband, and the town they live in, taught me that I can get through a Victorian novel and like it!

Answer: Middlemarch

"The Mill on the Floss" is also by George Eliot, "David Copperfield" is by Charles Dickens, and "Villette" is by Charlotte Bronte.
