Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Often purple coloured spring flowering climber

Answer: Wisteria

Originally from Asia, wisteria has made itself at home in Britain since the nineteenth century. It grows readily up walls and pergolas, and its scented flowers create a spectacular sight during the English spring.
2. Scented plant with flowers on an unbranched stem, known as 'aoi' in Japan

Answer: Hollyhock

Hollyhocks are popular garden plants as they are easy to grow and, if they are the right colour, can attract a variety of wildlife to the garden. Unfortunately plants in the hollyhock genus can fall prey to a specific fungus, commonly known as hollyhock rust, which significantly weakens the plant whilst the fungus grows.
3. Has blue, pink or white flowers; also known as larkspur

Answer: Delphinium

Delphiniums are summer flowering plants, and are a striking looking flower when in full bloom. Unfortunately, they are toxic, so care needs to be taken around children and domestic pets.
4. An ornamental plant with generally red flowers on a long stalk

Answer: Poppy

In addition to being a beautiful addition to a country garden, the poppy is also one of the most symbolic flowers in the world thanks to its association with remembrance and war memorials. It is an herbaceous plant that likes well drained soil and plenty of sun. However, if you want to add poppies to your garden then make sure you get hold of the right type - growing opium poppies (and processing their seeds) could leave you open to accusations of possessing illegal drugs.
5. Produces a dense collection of lavender-coloured flowers and is often used to create borders

Answer: Catmint

Catmint is a herbaceous perennial that brings both a high density of brightly-coloured flowers and a pleasant aroma to the garden. Various cultivars have been produced with subtly different colourings, including the 'Six Hills Giant' (periwinkle blue) and the 'Select Blue' (bright blue).
6. 'Finger-like' biennial with tubular flowers growing from a central spike

Answer: Foxglove

Whilst the term 'foxglove' can be used to refer to any flower under the Digitalis genus, it is usually the common foxglove, or lady's glove, that is being discussed. Normally purple in colour, the flowers of the common foxglove can be pink or even yellow if specifically cultivated.
7. Pastel coloured annual often found in borders

Answer: Sweet pea

These sweet-smelling blooms can flower from spring to fall, whether planted in a border, as a hanging plant or climbing a trellis.

Nurseryman Harry Eckford is credited with creating cultivars and bringing the flower to popularity in the late Victorian era.
8. Fragrant climbing plant with generally white or yellow flowers

Answer: Jasmine

There are many cultivars of jasmine that flower at different times of year in the UK. Of those commonly found in country gardens, the 'summer jasmine' with its beautiful white flowers and fragrant scent is a popular choice but needs to be planted in a sunny spot, while winter-flowering varieties are hardier and have yellow flowers to provide a bit of much-needed colour in the bleaker months of the year.
9. Compound-leaved flowers that can traditionally be either herbaceous or woody

Answer: Peony

Whilst the majority of peonies are herbaceous perennials, the tree-like peonies are also a recognised subgroup. In 1948, Toichi Itoh successfully bred the two categories to create a third category known as 'intersectional' peonies. The peony became the national flower of China in 1903, but was superseded by the plum blossom in Taiwan (Republic of China).
10. Large flower heads with colours dependent on soil acidity

Answer: Hydrangea

There are many types of hydrangea plants, but most generally thrive in areas where they get full sun for part of the day and some shade for the remainder. Though some hydrangea plants produce beautiful white blooms, Hydrangea macrophylla changes colors from pink to blue depending on the pH of the soil.
