Clay treated the form as a joke and filled it out as if he were depressed loner Holden Caulfield from the book "The Catcher in the Rye". Only after he heard the tapes did he realize that Hannah had filled the form out seriously and had described Clay as her ideal match. Because Clay had not, he was not among Hannah's matches. Clay had a crush on Hannah, but he had no idea that she also had a crush on him. Clay wondered whether Hannah would still be alive if he had given honest answers, since two of Hannah's 13 reasons for killing herself directly related to her matches.

On the tapes, Hannah said that Clay did not belong on her list the same way as the others did. However, while kissing Clay at the party, she became scared by the prospect of once again connecting with someone and having it "thrown back in my face." She also explained that she ignored him after the party because she was afraid to connect with him again.

However, Bryce Walker then came in, after telling Justin outside the door that he just needed a "few minutes" with Jessica, and raped her.

Hannah tried to get her to report it to the police, but Jenny refused and then got mad and left without Hannah. Shortly thereafter, two cars collided at the intersection when one of them failed to stop (due to the missing stop sign), killing its driver, a student who was working as a pizza delivery boy.

Hannah blamed herself for failing to stop either the rape or the traffic accident.

Tony, who loaned Hannah the old-fashioned cassette recorder that she used to make the tapes, received the second copy of the tapes the day that she died and had made sure that each person passed the tapes to the next person.

Clay realized that another of his classmates, Skye Miller, had undergone many of the same changes that Hannah described in herself, such as major changes in appearance and pulling away from friends. Hannah said that even her parents, who were worried about their business failing, failed to notice her changes. Clay had noticed them but had been afraid to discuss them with Hannah. Now, Clay was concerned that Skye was slipping away the same way that Hannah had, and so he followed her and started a conversation.
