Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Calpurnia's church?

Answer: First Purchase

Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout with her to First Purchase because Atticus has to leave town for two weeks as the state legislature was called into emergency session. However some people, namely Lulu, are not happy with Calpurnia bringing white folks into the church.
2. Who was the lawyer for the prosecution?

Answer: Mr Gilmer

Scout can not comment much on Mr Gilmer as he is an out of state attorney from Abbotsville she does not know much about. The only details Scout provides is that he is between forty and sixty years old with a bald head and shaven face.
3. What is Judge Taylor's dog called?

Answer: Ann Taylor

Ann Taylor is described as a "fat nondescript dog". Tim Johnson is the dog with rabies that Atticus has to kill.
4. What is Calpurnia's son called?

Answer: Zeebo

Zeebo drives the garbage truck and also reads from the hymn book in the First Purchase church so people can sing by means of "lining". He is one of the few black people who can read because his mother taught him when he was younger.
5. Who, according to Miss Maudie, should have had the Tom Robinson case?

Answer: Maxwell Green

Miss Maudie tells Jem that Judge Taylor had his reasons when he named Atticus to defend Tom Robinson. Maxwell Green, a court appointed defence attorney, should have taken the case because he needed the experience. Miss Maudie knew Atticus could not win but she also understood Judge Taylor named him because he was the only man who could keep a jury out so long debating the case.

This resulted in a baby step in the right direction in combating prejudice.
6. Who does Scout say reminds her of Everest in the sense that she is "cold and there"?

Answer: Aunt Alexandra

Scout refers to Aunt Alexandra as being a woman who lacks emotion. Aunt Alexandra is always trying to make Scout wear dresses and act more lady like.
7. Who says this quote: "I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time .... it's because he wants to stay inside."

Answer: Jem

Aunt Alexandra upsets Scout by telling her she is not allowed to play with Walter Cunningham because he is trash. Jem comforts her and explains the different types of people in the world but Scout thinks there is only one type of folks. However Jem is getting older and understands the prejudice that spans race, class and gender and comes to the conclusion that it is no wonder Boo wants to stay inside.
8. Who is Maycomb's doctor, who is referenced in the book as tending to Mrs Dubose among other tasks?

Answer: Doctor Reynolds

Doctor Reynolds also treats Jem at the end of the book after the run in with Bob Ewell.
9. Dill is from Meridian.

Answer: True

Dill comes to stay with his Aunt Rachel in Maycomb for the summer that is how he meets Jem and Scout.
10. What paper does Atticus always read?

Answer: Mobile Register

Scout learned to read by sitting on her father's knee when she was younger and following his words with his finger pointing at the text.
