Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What news did Miss Stephanie delight in telling the children concerning Atticus the morning after the trial?

Answer: Bob Ewell had spat on Atticus

Bob Ewell, upset at Atticus for defending Tom, confronted Atticus at the post office, declaring he would "get him," and then spit on Atticus. Atticus walked away instead of fighting Bob, which no doubt angered Bob Ewell even more.
2. "I'll think about it," was Atticus' reply to the suggestion of carrying a gun.

Answer: false

Atticus believed Bob Ewell's threats were all bark and no bite and thought carrying a gun was an invitation to get shot at.
3. Where was Tom taken after the verdict?

Answer: Enfield Prison Farm

Tom Robinson was taken to the Enfield Prison Farm located in Chester County. Instead of waiting for an appeal he panicked and tried to escape by climbing the fence. The guards shot him down.
4. According to Atticus he selected a jury member specifically because of his connection to the jail mob. Which family is the man related to?

Answer: Cunningham

The children were surprised Atticus selected a Cunningham as a jury member, considering how they had been part of the lynching mob. Atticus explained he wanted a man whose way of thinking had been stirred up. Cunningham initially wanted an acquittal and held out his vote, which explained how long it took for the jury to deliberate their verdict.
5. How did Aunt Alexandra upset Scout to tears?

Answer: by labeling Walter Cunningham as "trash"

Alexandra did say Scout was a problem for Atticus, but Scout told Jem she was crying because her aunt had labeled Walter Cunningham as "trash".
6. Scout begins to try on the role as a young Southern lady and attends Aunt Alexandra's missionary teaparty. She confided what secret to Miss Maudie during the teaparty?

Answer: she was wearing her britches under her dress

Scout was trying her best to fit into Maycomb's feminine society and began by helping out at her aunt's teaparty. She wore a dress, but kept her britches underneath, showing she wasn't quite ready to give up all of her tomboy ways.
7. The townspeople were greatly affected to hear of Tom Robinson's tragic death.

Answer: false

Tom Robinson's death was news for about two days and then people moved on, not giving the incident another thought.
8. The purpose of the Halloween pageant was to raise money for a community swimming pool.

Answer: false

The real purpose of the Halloween pageant was to keep children occupied so they would not be out pulling pranks in the community. Showcasing the county's products was a means to suffice that purpose. The carnival helped draw in the families as well.
9. Jem and Scout take a shortcut home after the pageant and Scout thinks they are being followed. Whose name does she shout out, calling that person a "big, wet hen"?

Answer: Cecil Jacobs

Cecil Jacobs crops up now and then in the story as a boy who lives near the Finch children. They did not play much with him, but it is obvious Scout has some feelings of dislike for him.
10. How did Scout show her empathy, her ability to "walk around in someone's skin" by the end of the book?

Answer: she walked Arthur Radley home

At the end of the book it is understood, although not clearly stated, that Arthur Radley saved the Finch children from Bob Ewell. Scout finds Arthur hiding in Jem's room and talks with him, escorting him to the front porch where it is not so bright and later walks him home.

She makes the comment how she didn't have to walk around in Arthur's skin to understand him, just standing on his front porch gave her understanding enough.
