Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does this story take place?

Answer: Maycomb County

Maycomb is thought to be a quiet town, until the trial happens. Most of the town is racist, and Atticus doesn't want Scout and Jem to be racist. There is no actual county called Maycomb County, it is just a figment of Harper Lee's mind.
2. Why does Jem have to read to Mrs. Dubose?

Answer: He cut the tops off of her bushes

Mrs. Dubose was a grumpy old lady, because of her addiction to morphine. When she dies, Scout and Jem realize that she was actually brave, and not mean. Atticus is the only one that is able to understand Mrs. Dubose prior to her death.
3. What is the name of Calpurnia's church?

Answer: First Purchase

It is called First Purchase, because it was the first purchase that the freed slaves bought. In one chapter, Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to the church, and Scout is surprised to see that there are no hymnals. It is a very old-fashioned church, because the people aren't able to afford much.
4. Why, according to Miss Maudie, is it a sin to kill a mockingbird?

Answer: Mockingbirds never hurt anyone

When Jem gets his new gun, Atticus tells him that killing birds is fine, but to remember that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. It is Miss Maudie who then explains why that is the case. The title is not only an allusion to this scene, but is also an allusion to certain characters in the book being mockingbirds, such as Tom Robinson.
5. Why is Tom Robinson on trial?

Answer: He is accused of raping a white woman

The main plot of "To Kill a Mockingbird" consists of his trial. The trial itself spans 4 chapters. Although it never says if he is guilty or innocent, the reader assumes through facts given that he is innocent.
6. Where did Scout, Jem, and Dill sit during the trial?

Answer: In the colored balcony

They aren't even supposed to be at the trial. They sneak in and sit in the colored balcony, where no one would see them. While they are here, they talk to some of the African-Americans as equals, including the Reverend.
7. Atticus is a good marksman.

Answer: True

When he is asked to shoot the mad dog, he doesn't want to. This is because, he hasn't shot in years, and he doesn't want to have to kill it. When he does shoot it, everyone finds out how good of a marksman he is. Later, Jem asks him why he never shot before. Atticus responds by telling him that if you have a talent, you don't need to show it off.
8. The jury decides that Tom Robinson is guilty.

Answer: True

Before the verdict is announced, Jem tells Scout that Tom is certain to be found innocent. Due to him being an African-American, the all-white jury decides in favor of Bob Ewell. If the jury was a fair jury, Tom Robinson most likely would have won.
9. Who attacks the children one night?

Answer: Bob Ewell

He is still mad at Atticus for defending Tom, so he takes his anger out on the kids. He is drunk that night and almost kills Jem. Later, Scout and Jem found out that the mysterious Boo Radley saved them.
10. How many times does the Tom Robinson trial get appealed?

Answer: 0

Although they were going to appeal, Tom Robinson is killed before they can. Atticus had said that he would appeal until they won the case; however, he wasn't able to appeal.
