Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Jennie learned her parents were having problems, she asked her father what was bothering him. What did he say?

Answer: He wasn't feeling well.

Jennie had been hearing her parents fighting at night, so one night, she saw her father alone and asked him what was wrong. He looked as though he had been crying. Jennie's dad finally told her that he and her mom weren't feeling well, but they would try to get better. It was just his way of saying they would try to work out their problems.
2. Why did Marcie move from town to town frequently?

Answer: Her father had to travel with the army.

When Bridget and Jennie first saw Marcie at school, they thought she was a snob since she wasn't very social. One day Marcie asked if she could join them at lunch. She explained that she didn't try to make a lot of friends because her dad was a high-ranking military officer, and she never knew when her family would have to move next.

After Jennie and Bridget got to know her, they thought Marcie was very friendly.
3. Why did Bridget quit speaking to Jennie as much?

Answer: She got a boyfriend.

Right after Marcie moved back to Washington, DC, Bridget started going out with a boy named Brad. Soon Bridget didn't associate with Jennie a lot. Whenever Bridget would ask Jennie to go somewhere with her, she would bring Brad along. Jennie felt left out and sad. Bridget and Brad broke up and got back together another time, and then she broke up with him for good at the end of the book.
4. Mr. Johnstone compared Jennie to what?

Answer: Sunbeam

In the middle of February, Jennie's math teacher had to leave to take care of her sick mother. She was replaced by Mr. Johnstone, a funny, unique young man who was much like a student himself. Jennie liked him right away. After a few days of being in his class, Mr. Johnstone made her his teacher's assistant. One day when Jennie was in his room, Mr. Johnstone pointed to a sunbeam that was shining on his desk in a colorful vase.

He said it was beautiful, but not as beautiful as she was.
5. Who caught Jennie, Bridget, and Marcie using drugs?

Answer: Marcie's father

Marcie moved back to her old school not long after she moved away. The three girls thought the way to solve all their problems was by smoking marijuana. One day they were on the back porch smoking when Marcie's dad, the high-ranking military officer, walked in on them. Bridget finally told her parents because she was afraid Marcie's dad would tell on her. Jennie eventually told her mother, but she didn't get punished.
6. What was the first gift Jennie received from Mr. Johnstone?

Answer: Perfume

The more Jennie got to know Mr. Johnstone, the more she liked him. Mr. Johnstone was constantly giving her more attention than the other students, telling her how beautiful she was. Near the end of April, he gave her a bottle of Spring's Wild Rose perfume. In May Jennie wrapped the bottle in rose petals and gave it to her mother for Mother's Day.
7. How did Jennie get to see Mr. Johnstone continuously over the summer?

Answer: She became his aide at summer school.

Jennie was afraid she would never see Mr. Johnstone again after school let out for the summer. Right after school was out, he phoned Jennie and asked if she wanted to be his assistant when he taught summer school. She gladly accepted. During the summer, their friendship became much more personal until it was like they were dating. Jennie should have realized something was wrong then.
8. Mr. Johnstone gave Jennie alcohol and drugs.

Answer: True

In the middle of July, after summer school had ended, Mr. Johnstone let Jennie come over to his house. There they discussed how much they loved each other. Jennie also allowed him to take a lot of pictures of her, some of them indecent. At Mr. Johnstone's house, she also drank wine, smoked marijuana, and took upper and downer pills he gave her.

She continued to fall for his trap and let him brainwash her.
9. How did Jennie find out Mr. Johnstone had betrayed her?

Answer: She listened to his phone messages.

Mr. Johnstone actually asked Jennie to marry him as soon as she turned fifteen. Near the end of July and into August, he claimed he didn't have much time to spend with her because he was making plans for them to move to another state and get married. One day Jennie went to Mr. Johnstone's house when he wasn't home and heard a phone message from his brother, urging him to move away before Jennie reported him.

He also said to bring all the indecent pictures he had taken of her. She also found out that Mr. Johnstone had been involved with other young girls before.
10. Did Jennie's parents get back together at the end of the book?

Answer: No

Jennie told her mom about how Mr. Johnstone had treated her, and they turned him in to the police. At the trial, he pleaded innocent, claiming Jennie was just trying to hurt him. Jennie and her mom had the trial put on hold while they went home and got the collection of notes he had written her and a necklace Mr. Johnstone had given her.

The judge had the necklace traced to the jeweler, and the notes were enough evidence to convict Mr. Johnstone. Jennie's father did come to visit the family during the trial, but he had already re-married. Police searched Mr. Johnstone's house and found all the pictures he had taken of Jennie.

He was thrown in jail, and his teaching licence was revoked.
