At the very start of the book, Tally is staring across the river, waiting for darkness and watching the inhabitants of New Pretty Town party under a salmon, cat-vomit-pink sky. She wishes she were there with Peris.

"This is white tie!" someone shrieks after noticing Tally wearing a pig mask and in her Uglyville clothes. Tally runs and ends up hiding in an elevator, where she then meets Peris.

Tally and Peris cut their palms with a penknife and let the wounds bleed together to seal their "best friends for life" promise. When Peris has the pretties operation, the scar, like all unwanted blemishes, disappears.

Tally is astonished with Shay's answer because it is two months and twenty-six days until Tally becomes a pretty, too, meaning they have the same birthday (which is the ninth of September).

"When the wallscreen changed, Shay fell over in a fit of giggles." Since Shay has olive skin, the white-blond color looks very odd, especially with the high hairdo, which makes it look like a dunce cap.

The Boss asks Tally if she'd rather take the bag of ancient magazines or the pepper powder. Tally wants the magazines, but then the Boss notices that she has no shoes on, so he makes her trade.
