Answer: Moroi are both royal and non-royal vampires who are able to specialize in the elements.

A Moroi is a living Vampire. Some Moroi attend St. Vladimir's alongside the dhampirs. Even older Moroi work in the academies to help their younger generation. Even some of them work normal everyday jobs as some others work for the royal families.

There are both royal and non-royal Moroi. Royal Moroi get a minimum of two dhampirs for protection whereas non-royal Moroi are lucky if they get one. There are very few royals left and dhampirs are getting even lower.

Answer: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water

The Common Elements:

Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.

These are the elements in which Moroi have been known to specialize in. The elements are used for various things except for battle. At least up until "Frostbite". Using your element for battle is banned in the Moroi society. Tasha Ozera fought to change this. Though Christian was the first to use his fire element against another, it wasn't in a serious battle. The first Moroi to use their element in battle would be Mia Rinaldi in the second novel, "Frostbite." Mia had used her water element as a distraction in order for Rose to kill the Strigoi that had captured them in Spokane.

In "Shadow Kiss", the Strigoi invasion at St. Vladmir's was the turning point for Moroi using their magic in battle. Christian Ozera aided Rose by using his fire element while she staked them. When the Guardians and other Moroi learned of this and noticed the kills done by the two of them, they finally decided that Moroi using their magic was not a bad thing. They then, in turn, infiltrated the Strigoi hideout near the academy and wiped out as many Strigoi as possible.

Also, two other things that are made using magic or the elements include the stakes dhampirs use for weapons and the wards that protect the academy and other places Moroi may live.

Spirit:

Spirit wasn't discovered until later in the first "Vampire Academy" novel. Lissa, who hasn't "yet" specialized, soon learns about spirit through the help of Rose and her uncle, Victor Dashkov. Okay, Victor really wasn't helping her so much he was using her, but he did share what he knew about Spirit with Lissa. Adrian Ivashkov, introduced in "Frostbite", is the only other spirit user discovered. In the past, as far as the first three novels go, there has only been two others who specialized in spirit; St. Vladmir and Ms. Karp. Four known spirit users in the Moroi society would make the element more of a rarity than a common element.

In "Shadow Kiss," there was one other Moroi that Rose and Lissa suspected to be a spirit user, however, she turned out that it was air she had specialized in. The lady was Ambrosia's aunt.


When a Moroi specializes, they are able to specialize in only four of the elements. There are Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Spirit is a rare element that only two other people in history have specialized in. For the fact that it is an unknown element, it is not taught at the academy.

Answer: A dhampir is part Moroi and part Human. Dhampirs are guardians who are trained to protect all Moroi from Strigoi.

A dhampir is born from parents who include a Moroi and either a human or a dhampir. A dhampir attends school to train to protect the Moroi. When the dhampir graduates, they are given their own Moroi to protect.

Answer: A Moroi

A dhampir female can mate with any Moroi male in order to birth offspring. Dhampirs have a biological trait that does not allow them to reproduce with another dhampir or a Human. However, there are actually two ways for a dhampir to be born;

1) A dhampir male mates with a Moroi female, or,
2) A dhampir female mates with a Moroi male.

A dhampir male mating with a Moroi female is very rare; in fact, it doesn't mention anything of the sort during the first three books of the series. However, Tasha Ozera wanted Dimitri to become her guardian as well as a lover in the second book.

There are colonies of dhampir females who live together to raise their dhampir children. Moroi men come to visit these colonies to receive intimate satisfaction.

Answer: A Strigoi is an "undead" vampire who contains immense strength and compulsion.

The elements are alive within everything, and because they are alive means that a Strigoi can not use them. Strigoi are the very reason a dhampir trains to protect the Moroi. Although, they may be strong and have a lot of stamina, they are not quite the smartest. Still, you must remember to always be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to face a Strigoi when you least expect it.

Answer: By the sharing of blood with a Strigoi. It can either be by the will of someone who wishes to be Strigoi or by force from the Strigoi.

There are two ways to turn Strigoi:

1) A Strigoi can force you to change by the sharing of blood. Once you and the Strigoi share each other's blood, you will turn Strigoi. This can happen to anyone being a Moroi, dhampir, or a Human.

2) If a Moroi chooses to turn Strigoi (mostly to gain immortality), all they must do is drain all blood from their victim.

Answer: This means you are kissed by shadows and you are bonded in two ways; with death and with the Moroi.

When Lissa used Spirit to bring Rose back from the dead, she poured her life into her. This created two bonds. One of the bonds is between Lissa and Rose. They now have a psychic bond (although it is only a one way connection) which helps Rose with Lissa.

Rose is also bonded with death. When she died, she crossed into death and she was kissed by the shadows. The bond increased when she killed the Strigoi and witnessed Mason's death. Now, she is able to see the undead and is visited by Mason's ghost. She is also able to sense the presence of a Strigoi.

Answer: Lightning

Molnija is Russian for lightning and guardians receive these marks for every Strigoi they kill. They look like lightning bolts crossing each other. Along with Molnija marks, when a novice graduates and becomes a guardian, they earn a promise mark.

Answer: Novice

Novices are dhampir students who go to school and train in combat to hunt Strigoi and protect their Moroi.

Answer: Ivashkov, Lazar, Dragomir, Szelsky, and Ozera

There are twelve royal Moroi families. There are only eleven of the names mentioned in the first three books. There are the Dragomirs, Lazars, Ivashkovs, Szelskys, Ozeras, Contas, Drozdovs, Vodas, Dashkovs, Badicas, and the Zeklos family.

The family in which starts with a "T" has not been introduced into any of the first three books.

Dimitri Belikov is Rose's combat trainer and not a Moroi at all. Ralf Sarcozy is the friend of Jesse Zeklos. He is not a royal; however he is friends with one. Mia Rinaldi is no royal either and the fact that her mother works for the Drozdov family is used against her in the battle between her and Rose.
