Sam Hartline, who will become one of Ben's greatest enemies throughout the first six book in the series, is one of the most brutal people I've ever read about. His methods would have made Hitler proud.

Of course not. Ben Raines is still alive through at least "Treason in the Ashes", which, as near as I can unwrangle it, is about Book 17. As near as I can tell there are so far about 24 books in this series, and it keeps getting better with each one, although early in the series it was getting repetitive.
