Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My name is Edward Fairfax Rochester. I have a very stern manner, a commanding attitude and am not a typical romantic hero. I am married to Bertha Mason, but love another. Which book am I in?

Answer: Jane Eyre

Edward entered into a marriage with Bertha Mason, who he met in Spanish Town, Jamaica. He was unaware that his father had already espoused him to Bertha to secure her fortune. Soon after their marriage, he realized that he had made a great mistake, as Bertha was quite mad. After many years of roaming around Europe, he returned home and met his ward's new nanny, Jane Eyre. After many twists and turns to the story, Jane and Edward declare their love for each other and finally marry.

"Jane Eyre" was written by Charlotte Bronte. Her sister Emily is known for writing "Wuthering Heights", and her sister Anne for "Agnes Grey". Charlotte was born in April 1816 in Yorkshire, UK, and died in March 1855 during childbirth. Because it was deemed "unfeminine" for females to write novels, the three sisters used pen names, with the surname "Bell". Charlotte was Currer Bell, Emily was Ellis Bell and Anne was Acton Bell. Their pen-names have the same initials as their real names.

There have been at least six movies based on the novel, the first in 1943 when Orson Welles starred as Mr Rochester. Actors Timothy Dalton, William Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Toby Stephens and Michael Fassbender have all played Edward Fairfax Rochester
2. My name is Santiago and I live in Cuba. I am a very simple man and I fish for a living. Which book am I in?

Answer: The Old Man and the Sea

"The Old Man and the Sea" was written by Ernest Hemingway in 1951 and published the following year. It was Hemingway's last major work of fiction published in his lifetime. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954 and the Nobel Committee cited this book as contributing to his Award.

Santiago, in his younger days was known as El Campeon - the "Shaft" of his fishing village. He had gone 84 days without catching a fish so, to show that he still had what it takes, he spent three days battling with a giant marlin. He eventually killed the fish and tied it to the side of his boat, but on the way back to shore he was attacked by a group of sharks. He managed to kill five of them, but the rest devoured the marlin and just left its skeleton, still tied to the boat.

Three movies have been made based on Hemingway's novel, the first in 1958 starred Spencer Tracy; the 1990 film starred Anthony Quinn, and the 1999 movie starred Gordon Pinsent as the voice of Santiago.
3. I am known as The Scarlet Pimpernel and I am the hero of a play and novel of the same name, written by Baroness Orczy in about 1903. I tell the story of the rescue of French men and women sentenced to death during the French Revolution. As a lot of heroes seem to have a secret identity, so too do I! What is my real name?

Answer: Sir Percy Blakeney

Whilst pretending to be foppish and not very intelligent, seemingly to care for only dressing in splendid clothes and not taking any notice of world affairs, Sir Percy Blakeney is really the famous Scarlet Pimpernel - the master of disguise. He is an expert swordsman, a quick-witted and intelligent man who rescues French men and women from the guillotine during the French Revolution. He takes his name from the card he leaves behind, on which is the drawing a small flower, a scarlet pimpernel.

Several films, made-for-TV movies and a TV series have been made about the Scarlet Pimpernel. Some of the actors who have played the Scarlet Pimpernel/Sir Percy Blakeney are Leslie Howard, Anthony Andrews and Richard E Grant.
4. I am the orphaned son of an Irish soldier and his wife, living in India in the late 19th Century, then under British rule. I live on the streets of Lahore and make an existence by begging and running small errands, occasionally for horse trader, Mahub Ali, who is really a native operative of the British secret service. I befriend an aged Tibetan Lama and accompany him on a long journey. What is my name?

Answer: Kim

The novel "Kim" was written by Nobel Prize-winning Englishman, Rudyard Kipling, and published in serial form in "McClure's Magazine" from December 1900 to October 1901. It was first published as a book in October 1901. The story is set at the end of the second Afghan war, around "The Great Game", which was a strategic rivalry and conflict involving Britain and Russia for supremacy in Central Asia.

Kim befriended an old Tibetan Lama and accompanied him on his quest. Because Kim had lived on the streets, most people took him for an Indian child and not a white boy, but when travelling with the Lama, Kim was recognised by a chaplain in his late father's regiment because of something he wore around his neck. With the Lama funding his education, Kim was sent to a top English school in Lucknow and, when on school holiday, he was trained in espionage. Upon finishing school, he continued his travels with his Lama and they journeyed to the Himalayas, where the Lama fell into some conflict with Russian intelligence agents. Of course Kim rescued his Lama and when they returned to Lahore, Kim was able to give much information to British intelligence.

In 1950 "Kim" was made into a film starring Dean Stockwell as Kim, with Errol Flynn as Mahbub Ali, and Paul Lukas as the Lama. A made-for-TV movie in 1984 starred Ravi Sheth as Kim, Bryan Brown as Mahbub Ali, and Peter O'Toole as the Lama.
5. My name is Holden Caulfield and I am telling my story from a hospital, about how I came to be there. Which book am I in?

Answer: The Catcher in the Rye

"The Catcher in the Rye" was written by J D Salinger and published in 1951. It is estimated that approximately 250,000 copies of this book are still sold each year and that, altogether, more than 65 million copies have been sold. In 2005 "Time" magazine included this book on its list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923.

Holden Caulfield is the narrator and protagonist of the story, which he relates from a hospital or sanatorium. The story takes place over a few days, when Holden is 16 years old and leaves his school and heads for New York City for three days.

The man who shot John Lennon, Mark David Chapman, was fascinated with JD Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye", and believed that he would become Holden Caulfield when he killed John Lennon.
6. My name is John Yossarian and I am a 28-year-old Captain in the US Army Air Corps stationed on a small island off the coast of Italy during World War II. Which book am I in?

Answer: Catch-22

"Catch-22" was written by Joseph Heller and was published in 1961. The book is set in 1943 during World War II and the story describes events from the points of view of different characters.

The exploits of John Yossarian are based on experiences of John Heller, who was also a bombardier in the Army Air Forces stationed on a similar island to that in the book. John Yossarian goes to great lengths to stay alive as he has the idea that people are trying to kill him either by attacking his plane or forcing him to fly missions.

Catch 22 was first made into a movie in 1970 and starred Alan Arkin as John Yossarian.
7. My name is Jack Ryan and while visiting London I save a Royal couple from being kidnapped by an Irish terrorist group known as the Ulster Liberation Army. I accept an offer by the CIA to work for them as an analyst. What book am I in?

Answer: Patriot Games

When Ryan upset the kidnapping attempt, the leader of the Irish group was caught and imprisoned; however, he escaped and he and his group went after Jack Ryan. His wife and daughter were injured in the attack and Ryan accepted an offer by the CIA to work with them as an analyst. When the Royal couple he saved are in the US, they visit Ryan's home, thus giving the Ulster Liberation Army another chance to kill them all together. Of course that fails, and with the help of his friend and some marines and sailors from the US Naval Academy and the local police, the terrorists are all caught.

Jack Ryan was created by author Tom Clancy and appears in many of Clancy's books. Ryan commenced his career in the USMC and went on to be a Certified Public Accountant and Stockbroker; a Professor at the US Naval Academy; a CIA Analyst; Deputy Director of the CIA; National Security Advisor, and eventually the President of the United States.

Five Hollywood films have been made featuring Jack Ryan; the first, 'The Hunt for Red October' (1990) starred Alec Baldwin. This was followed by 'Patriot Games' (1992) and 'Clear and Present Danger' (1994) both starring Harrison Ford; 'The Sum of All Fears' (2002) starred Ben Affleck, and 'Jack Ryan' (2013) starred Chris Pine.

The three alternative answers are all books written by Tom Clancy.
8. My name is Michael Y "Mitch" McDeere and I am a character in the second book written by John Grisham in 1991. I am a tax lawyer, educated at Harvard and I am also certified as a public accountant. What book am I in?

Answer: The Firm

"The Firm" by John Grisham, sold over seven million copies and was made into a very successful movie in 1993 starring Tom Cruise as Mitch McDeere. After graduating from Harvard Law School, Mitch had offers from several law firms, but was lured to join Bendini, Lambert and Lock, based in Memphis. They offered him a large salary, lease on a new BMW and a low interest mortgage on a house. However, he was alarmed at the number of deaths of employees of the firm and he hired a private investigator to find out more about the deaths.

Mitch was contacted by an FBI agent who told him that the firm was part of the while collar operations of the Morolti crime family of Chicago, and that the partners in the firm were involved in multi-million dollar tax fraud and money laundering. As a result, Mitch began his plan to get enough evidence for the FBI to indict 51 present and former members of the Morolto family. However, Mitch and his wife were in danger, so he stole $10 million from the firm's bank account in the Cayman Islands and they went into hiding in the Caribbean to enjoy their new wealth.

The three alternative answers are all books written by John Grisham.
9. My name is Henri Charriere and I am a character in a book written by myself, allegedly based on my own memoirs of my imprisonment and escape attempts from penal colonies in French Guiana. What book am I in?

Answer: Papillon

Although Henri Charriere claims that all events in "Papillon" are absolutely true ("allowing for minor lapses in memory"), there has been controversy as to its actual accuracy. The book's title was based on Charriere's nickname, derived from a tattoo of a butterfly on his chest. "Papillon" is French for "butterfly".

The book tells of Charriere's 14 year imprisonment in prisons and penal colonies after being wrongly convicted of murder, and the several escape attempts he made. He eventually settled in Venezuela and became a citizen of that country.

Papillon was made into a movie in 1973 and starred Steve McQueen as Henri Charriere.
10. My name is Hieronymus Bosch and I am a homicide detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. My mother was murdered when I was 11 years old and I live in a house on stilts in the Hollywood Hills. Answer: The Black Echo

"The Black Echo" (1992), written by Michael Connelly, was his debut novel and it won him the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award in 1992. His hero, Hieronymus Bosch (known as Harry), went on to feature in many of Connelly's books. Hieronymus Bosch was named after the Dutch painter of the same name.

Harry had been a "tunnel rat" in Vietnam during the Vietnamese War. In "The Black Echo", one of his old tunnel rat friends is found dead and Harry suspects that the death may be related to a bank robbery where subterranean tunnels were used. He works with FBI agent Eleanor Wish in an attempt to solve the murder and robbery which had been connected to a group of Vietnamese living in Los Angeles.

Michael Connelly was born in 1956. He was President of the Mystery Writers of America from 2003 to 2004. Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch is the protagonist in many of Connelly's novels. As well as his Harry Bosch series, Connelly has written series about the characters Mickey Haller (a lawyer) and Jack McEvoy (a reporter), as well as several other books.
