Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Theresa Duarte defects from Laconia.

Answer: "Tiamat's Wrath" (book 8)

Theresa Duarte was the daughter of Laconian High Consul Winston Duarte. In "Tiamat's Wrath" the concept of the prisoner's dilemma was repeatedly referenced. Players could either cooperate or defect, with cooperation being better for everyone in the long run. By the end of the novel, Theresa felt like she was the only player still trying to cooperate, so she finally changed her strategy.
2. Filip Nagata stops history from repeating on the colony of Jannah.

Answer: "The Sins of Our Fathers" (book 9.5)

Filip Nagata (formerly Inaros) was the son of Naomi Nagata. While she never found out what happened to her son, the readers did in the final novella of the series.
3. Colonel Aliana Tanaka tracks down High Consul Winston Duarte.

Answer: "Leviathan Falls" (book 9)

High Consul Winston Duarte's mind was damaged in the previous novel, but then he managed to pull himself back together, and then wandered away. The rest of Laconia was so stunned by his change that they didn't follow him. Admiral Trejo tasked Tanaka with tracking down the High Consul and returning him to lead Laconia.
4. Clarissa Mao attempts to ruin James Holden's reputation.

Answer: "Abaddon's Gate" (book 3)

Clarissa Mao was the daughter of Jules-Pierre Mao, who was largely responsible for the protomolecule disaster that happened in the first two novels. Mao was imprisoned and his company and reputation were destroyed. Clarissa vowed to return the favour to the man she held responsible: James Holden.
5. Detective Josephus Miller searches for Julie Mao.

Answer: "Leviathan Wakes" (book 1)

The first novel alternated between two viewpoint characters. It was lightly based on a custom table top role-playing game campaign Ty Franck (one of the authors) ran. One group inspired the James Holden side of the story. Another was run for Daniel Abraham (the other author), which inspired the Josephus Miller side of the story.
6. Laconian Governor Biryar Rittenaur learns to be more flexible.

Answer: "Auberon" (book 8.5)

Laconia returned after thirty years of isolation to conquer the rest of humanity. Laconia was a very strict, militaristic society, which did not always mesh well with their new subjects. To make things run smoothly, Rittenaur had to abandon some of the more rigid Laconian ideas.
7. Bobbie Draper helps her nephew get out of of the drug trade.

Answer: "Gods of Risk" (book 2.5)

As important as Mars was to "The Expanse", there were very few viewpoint chapters in any of the books set on the planet. "Gods of Risk" was a rare exception, telling a story about a student under stress preparing for university, and disentangling himself from a drug trafficker.
8. The Rocinante crew help resolve a conflict on the first extra-solar colony, Ilus.

Answer: "Cibola Burn" (book 4)

The ring gates opened up over a thousand new worlds. The inner planets had ideas about how to properly explore and document these new planets, but that was too slow for the refugees of the war the inner planets had just fought, so they started a colony on their own. Even with so much new real estate, Earth couldn't help itself from fighting over the one place that was claimed by someone else.
9. Laconian Governor Santiago Singh cracks down on his new subjects.

Answer: "Persepolis Rising" (book 7)

Singh grew up on Laconia (instead of being one of the original deserters from Mars). He was selected to be the new governor of Medina Station for his commitment to Laconian ideals. His harsh rule did go over well with his new Belter subjects. His chief of security had to permanently stop him when Singh went too far.
10. Michio Pa becomes a pirate queen.

Answer: "Babylon's Ashes" (book 6)

Michio Pa was first seen in the third book, but came back as a viewpoint character in the sixth. She started as a Captain in Marco Inaro's Free Navy, but went rogue when he started hurting Belters - the people he'd sworn to protect.
11. Dr. Paolo Cortázar escapes a Belter prison.

Answer: "The Vital Abyss" (book 5.5)

Paolo Cortázar was a Protogen scientist responsible for the events in the first novel. He was captured and held in a Belter prison until Winston Duarte got him out for his Laconian project.
12. Cara works with aliens to bring her brother back to life.

Answer: "Strange Dogs" (book 6.5)

Winston Duarte chose to establish his new empire in the Laconian system because the planet had inert orbital platforms. Years after arriving, his scientists manged to bring the platforms online, which also activated the repair drones on the surface. The drones were able to bring living organisms back to life, including Cara's brother.

When her parents were terrified instead of happy to have their son back, Cara ran away and was also repaired. The two were captured and became subjects in Laconia's experiments.
13. Timothy grows up on the streets of Baltimore.

Answer: "The Churn" (book 4.5)

Timothy had a rough early life as an undocumented child growing up on the streets. He was practically born into the city's crime network. He ended up killing his boss and taking his name before escaping Earth, becoming Amos Burton.
14. Prax Meng searches for his daughter while Earth and Mars fight.

Answer: "Caliban's War" (book 2)

Prax's daughter, who had a weakened immune system, was taken care of by a specialist. Unbeknownst to him, the specialist was actually a corrupt scientist who was filtering for ideal candidates for his experiments with the protomolecule. These experiments became the monsters (protomolecule weapons) that Earth and Mars were fighting over in the novel.
15. The crew of the Rocinante split up for their own adventures.

Answer: "Nemesis Games" (book 5)

After four books together, "Nemesis Games" saw the four members split up. Alex went back to Mars, Amos went back to Earth, Naomi went to Ceres (the largest population centre in the Belt), and Holden stayed on Tycho Station to oversee repairs to the Rocinante.

The crew were also apart in "Tiamat's Wrath" (book 8), but not by choice.
