Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what European city was "The Taming of the Shrew" set?

Answer: Padua, Italy

This play revolves around Katherina, the eldest daughter of a Padua lord, and Katherina's younger sister, Bianca. While there are men who want to marry Bianca, she is forbidden from marrying until Katherina, the "shrew", is married.
2. Who is exiled from the French duchy in "As You Like It"?

Answer: Duke Senior

"As You Like It" revolves around Duke Senior, who is exiled by Duke Frederick and lives along with other exiled lords in the Forest of Ardenne. It also focuses on Orlando, who is neglected of both health and education by Oliver after their father, Sir Rowland de Bois, dies.
3. In Act IV of "The Tempest", Prospero summons a court masque for Ferdinand and Miranda. Scholars note this as an event similar to the wedding of Frederick V and Princess Elizabeth. In what year did this take place?

Answer: 1613

"The Tempest" involves a shipwreck near an island belonging to Miranda and her father, Prospero. According to the story he tells Miranda, he set up the shipwreck, because the ship contained the people who overthrew him as Duke of Milan and banished him to that very island.

The prelude to the masque in Act IV displays a stark difference between Ferdinand and Prospero when it comes to Miranda's well being.
4. Why is Antipholus arrested in "The Comedy of Errors"?

Answer: He refuses to pay for jewelry.

In Act III, when Angelo asks to be paid for a gold chain that was to be given to Antipholus of Ephesus, he claims he never received it and refuses to pay for it. Angelo arrests him and Dromio is the one who bails him out.
5. What is Richard's ultimate fate in "Richard II"?

Answer: Murdered in prison

"Richard II" illustrates the last few years of the English monarch's life, and various events that lead to his imprisonment and murder. Actions include banishment of a duke without a trial for a murder, and seizure of funds and land of the nobility, leading to a coup d'etat conducted by the nobility.
6. Who does Orsino initially fall in love with in the play "Twelfth Night"?

Answer: Olivia

While Orsino has fallen in love with Olivia in "Twelfth Night", he cannot court her as she is in mourning over the death of her brother. However, the arrival of Viola creates a love triangle; she disguises herself as a man named Cesario. Viola falls in love with Orsino, but Olivia loves Cesario (who is really Viola).
7. What was NOT a condition of King Ferdinand, Lord Berowne, Lord Longaville, and Lord Dumaine's vow in the beginning of "Love's Labour's Lost"?

Answer: Not leave the country for three years

As part of their "vow to scholarship", King Ferdinand even goes as far as barring women from coming close to his court. However, when the Princess of France arrives on business, this vow ends up threatened as all four men fall in love with her.
8. Why do Mistresses Page and Ford try to ruin Sir Falstaff's life in "The Merry Wives of Windsor"?

Answer: He sends a love letter to both of them

Falstaff's initial plan was to seduce Mistresses Page and Ford, because they have control over their respective husband's money, which he desires. However, when both find out he sent them a letter, Falstaff's plans fall apart.
9. Where does the play "Cymbeline" take place? (There are two areas.)

Answer: Britain and Rome

"Cymbeline" focuses on the daughter of British king Cymbeline, Imogen. While she courts a member of Cymbeline's court, Posthumus, Cymbeline banishes him since he is not of pure royal blood. He is banished to Rome, where he competes with Iachimo to win Imogen's heart.
10. One of the sources for "Measure for Measure" was from a set of stories by the author Cinthio. When (what century) was this set of stories released?

Answer: 16th

While "Measure for Measure" was believed to have been written in 1603, it was never published until 1623, as part of a folio of Shakespeare's works. The play revolves around Claudio, a man who is sentenced to death by Lord Angelo for having an extramarital relationship with Juliet, even though they were engaged.

The play was primarily based on Cinthio's "Hecatommithi", published in 1565. This set of stories was also the inspiration for Shakespeare's "Othello".
