Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the mystery "Death on the Nile", two people were responsible for the murders, but one of them was the real mastermind. Who was it?

Answer: Jacqueline de Bellefort

Jacquie and Simon committed the crimes together, but as Jacquie confesses to Poirot, Simon could never have pulled it off by himself. This is one of the few crimes Poirot investigates that he genuinely feels sorry for the murderer. He truly likes Jacquie, and tries to get her to come to her senses early in the book before the crimes are even committed.
2. In "Evil Under the Sun", almost everyone despises Arlene Stuart Marshall. But who murders her? Her stepdaughter? Her husband? Her husband's old flame? The jealous wife?....

Answer: Patrick Redfern

Although he seems like the most unlikely suspect, Patrick Redfern, the paramour of Arlene Marshall, is her murderer. He borrows money from Arlene without ever intending to pay her back, and he and his wife Christine plan her murder and most likely would have been successful if not for Hercule Poirot.
3. "Ordeal by Innocence", a favorite of Ms.Christie herself, is about a family who thinks their brother/ son Jacko murdered his mother, Rachel Argyle. But when a stranger shows up one day to let them know Jacko was innocent of the crime after all, they are faced with the uncomfortable knowledge that one of them is the murderer. Who is the guilty party?

Answer: Kirsten Lindstrom, the maid

Kirsten Lindstrom, the maid, actually murdered Rachel Argyle, though she never would have done it without Jacko convincing her he loved her and urging her to do it.
4. In "Towards Zero", Superintendent Battle, who we first met in "Cards on the Table", has to discover who murdered Lady Tressilian. But to discover that, he has to know who the murderer is ultimately trying to kill by framing then for Lady Tressilian's death and sending them to the gallows. Who is the evil mastermind?

Answer: Nevile Strange, one of Lady Tressilian's beneficiaries

Nevile Strange can't forgive his ex-wife Audrey for leaving him, and he carefully plans a murder that he can frame Audrey for and have her sentenced to death- the real murder he wishes to committ.
5. In "Pocket Full of Rye", Rex Fortescue is murdered and found with a pocket full of rye cereal. Who wanted the wealthy man dead the most?

Answer: Lancelot Fortescue, his estranged son

Rex Fortescue is murdered by his amoral son Lance with the help of an unsuspecting and very foolish maid, Gladys. Miss Marple solves the crime.
6. In "Poirot Loses A Client", (also called "Dumb Witness"), Poirot receives a letter from an elderly woman who fears her life is in danger, but by the time Poirot receives the letter, Emily Arundell is already dead. Which of her relatives committed the dastardly deed?

Answer: Mrs. Tanios. her niece

This book is yet another brilliant example of Christie handling a dysfuntional family who all have motives to kill. It is full of amoral relatives who all could conceivably have committed the crime, and only Poirot could figure it out, with a little help from his friend Hastings.
7. In "The Sittaford Mystery" (also entitled The Murder at Hazelmoor) the story begins at a seance where the "spirits" tell the attendants that Captain Trevelyan has been murdered. Which one of the members of the party murdered the Captain?

Answer: Major Burnaby, the Captain's best friend

Major Burnaby is a clever murderer, and if it wasn't for a pair of troublesome boots, he most likely would have been successful at getting away with his crime.
8. In "The Moving Finger", a rash of nasty anonymous letters plague the citizens of Lymstock. One of these letters provokes a suicide- or was the letter writer using them as a ruse to cover up murder? After a parlor maid is found stabbed in the back of the head, questions arise. Who is the guilty party?

Answer: Mr. Symmington, whose wife "committs suicide"

Mr Symmington is indeed a very clever murderer, and this novel, in my opinion, is CHristie at her all time best. Miss Marple stars briefly.
9. In "Murder on the Links", M.Renauld appeals to Poirot for help, much like Emily Arundell in " Poirot Loses A Client". Renauld's letter arrives too late, and he dies before Poirot can help him. Who is his killer?

Answer: Marthe Daubreuil, fiancee of Renauld's son

In this rather difficult to follow novel, Hastings works alongside Poirot and meets his future wife Dulcie, or Cinderella as he calls her.
10. In "Third Girl", Mrs.Oliver teams up with Poirot to discover if a young girl is simply a paranoid drug addict, or really a murderer as she claims to be. They discover she is a hapless victim of the real killer- who?

Answer: her father, Andrew Restarick

Poor Norma Restarick is the victim of a man posing as her long lost father and one of her roommates, Frances Cary.
11. In "Nemesis", Miss Marple is called on from the grave by her old friend Jason Rafiel, whom we met in "A Carribean Mystery". Mr. Rafiel doesn't believe that his son Michael really murdered his girlfriend , Verity Hunt, and he wants Miss Marple to see if she can discover who the real murderer is. Who is really responsible for Verity's death?

Answer: Clothilde, Verity's guardian

Verity's creepy guardian is her true killer, but who could have ever discovered it but Miss Marple?!
12. In "Mrs. McGinty's Dead", Poirot is trying to save a man from the gallows at the request of his old friend Superintendent Spence. Who did he discover to be the killer of Mrs. McGinty?

Answer: Robin Upward, Mrs. Oliver's friend and playwright

Robin Upward is an unscrupulous young man who kills more than once to keep his true identity hidden. This is an extremely well planned out mystery, and Robin is almost above suspicion because of his friendship with the charming Ariadne Oliver.
13. "Elephants Can Remember" is a look back to an old crime. Poirot and Mrs. Oliver try to figure out how Lord and Lady Ravenscroft died. Was it a murder-suicide? Maybe, but maybe there was more to it than that. Who else was involved?

Answer: Dolly,Lady Ravenscroft's twin sister

Dolly Ravenscroft was quite mad, and she murdered her sister. Lord Ravenscroft pitied her, so rather than turning her over to the police, he killed her and then committed suicide.
14. "Sleeping Murder", Miss Marple's final case, also goes back in time to revisit an old crime. Gwenda Reed is sure that when she was a little girl she saw the dead body of her stepmother, Helen. Did her father kill her, or someone else?

Answer: Dr. Kennedy, Helen's brother

Dr. Kennedy is guilty of incestuous thoughts about his own sister, and he kills her to keep her from moving away with her new husband.
(A fitting end to Miss marple's career)
15. "Five Little Pigs" (or" Murder in Retrospect")deals with the narcissistic artist Amyas Crale's death. His daughter wants to know- did her mother really deserve to be hung for her husbands's death, or did someone else committ the crime? Do you remember who the real murderer was?

Answer: Elsa Greer, Amyas's young lover

Elsa Greer, the young lover of Amyas Crale, killed him after she heard him explaining to his wife that he didn't really care a thing about Elsa, he just wanted to finish the picture he was painting of her. In an avenging fury, she poisons Amyas and sends his wife to the gallows.
