Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How was Eliza Nuttall proved to be a witch?

Answer: She floated in the river

Mary's grandmother was taken from their home and was tried as a witch. First, she was forced to walk between the walls of the dungeon for a day and night. She didn't confess, so she was stabbed by a Witch Pricker. She still wouldn't confess, so she was tied up and thrown in the river. Eliza floated to the top, and was proven to be a witch.
2. Who rescues Mary from the crowd in the square during her grandmother's hanging?

Answer: Her mother

Mary is pulled into an alley by a mysterious woman in a cloak, and taken to an inn. The next day she notices that the woman has the same eyes as hers. Mary knows now that she is her mother, who she never knew about.
3. Which of these items is not in the box from Mary's mother?

Answer: a Bible

After Mary meets the Rivers family, she opens the box she received from her mother at the inn. Inside are clothes, sewing materials, two knives, a spoon and fork, a pewter plate, and ink, quill, and paper for writing. Mary begins to write her journal.
4. Why could the ship not leave the dock?

Answer: The fog was too thick

Mary was supposed to have left with the ship on the morning of her arrival at the inn, but the mist was too thick for the ship to leave.
5. What does Mary call the "Great Wonder" she saw?

Answer: A bird

Mary sees a bird that was blown off course, and the crew tries to decide if it was a good or bad sign. One of the crewman named Nathaniel Vale tried to shoot it for meat, but the other sailors jumped at him and took the gun. One of the bird's feathers fell down, and Mary collected it to use as a pen.
6. What does the congregation discuss in the Meeting House in Salem?

Answer: Whether to go into the wilderness or stay in Salem

When they arrived, they found out that the Reverend Johnson and his group have gone into the wilderness to search for another settlement. Martha and the Rivers family think they should go, but Jonah and Tobias wish to stay. They finally agree to leave.

But a few days later, the journey is delayed again. The men from Salem and the Elders say they should let the Native Americans guide them, but Reverend Cornwell disagrees. John Rivers joins sides with the Elders, and they win.
7. How was Jonah injured?

Answer: A log landed on his foot

He was in the saw pit with Tobias and John, and a log slid and hit his ankle. Martha says that his foot is probably broken. She recommends that he takes a poultice made of St. Johnswort, bryony, comfrey, dill, and scabious, but none of the plants grow in the area.
8. What is Mary's Native American name?

Answer: Eyes of a Wolf

Mary meets Jaybird, a young Native American boy, when she is in the woods. Jaybird takes her to see his grandfather, whom he lives with in a cave-like shelter. The old man's name is White Eagle. He called Mary "mahigan shkiizhig", or "Eyes of a Wolf".
9. Who does Rebekah marry?

Answer: Tobias

Rebekah tells Mary that she has to marry Tobias because she pregnant with his child. They get married a few days later. Afterwards, Mary is in the woods and she meets Deborah, Hannah, Sarah, and Elizabeth picking herbs. Hannah urges Mary to put a curse on Rebekah so that she can marry Tobias.
10. What happens to Mary at the end?

Answer: She runs away into the forest

After the village girls are caught in the barn doing witchcraft, Reverend Johnson orders a Day of Humiliation, of prayer for forgiveness. The next day, Hannah and Deborah began to act ill, and were taken from the church. The doctor says they have no health disorder, but they are possessed. Hannah and Deborah were not really possessed.

Another Day of Humiliation was held, and during the meeting, Rebekah went into labour. She is taken from the church, and Obadiah Wilson is asked to reveal the witch.

He points out Mary. During the sudden comotion, Mary escapes out the back door. She stops by Martha's house only to get food, clothes, and a blanket. Then she runs away into the woods.
