While Richard and Kahlan are walking up towards the house, Chase stops them. They don't need an invitation to go to Michael's party, and Richard knows this, but Chase is a friend of Richard's, so they talk for a moment, and Richard explains about the men who attacked him and Kahlan. Chase tells them that if they need a place to stay, they could always stay with him for a while, and later Richard assures Kahlan that Chase has been keeping a protective eye on them since they told him about the men.

When Richard gives her some ribs, she is immediately suspicious. She doesn't know what kind of meat they eat in Westland, so to make sure she's not eating people's flesh like some eat in her home of the Midlands, she asks Richard to tell her what type of meat he's giving her.

Zedd knew Richard was coming, by the cloud that seemed to have been following him since his father's death. While Richard seemed to think that it was only the last few days that it had been following him, Zedd went on a little bit of a rant that it had been following him for three weeks, how he had not seen Richard since his father's death, and that he could find a lost bug in a barn easier than he could find Richard.

The rock that Zedd goes back for is what Richard knows as his "Cloud Rock", but what Zedd later explains is his "Wizard's Rock". It was given to him by his father a long time ago. Richard sees him use it whenever he sees a cloud that he finds interesting, but it is normally used when he wants to talk to his parents from the dead, or when he needs to relax.

While Richard is keeping watch, Zedd comes to talk to him, and Richard explains to Zedd that he offered Kahlan a red apple. Zedd then has to explain to Richard that Panis Rahl got his hands on a magic that was specific to colour, and he chose to use it on red fruit so that all red fruit was poisonous. A lot of children liked red fruit, so a lot of children died.

Bill was a friend of the Chase, and when he realized that the he had been struck down by the underworld, he and his son brought him and Zedd up the back way, and then he told them how to find the bone woman, Adie. He also told Richard to make sure Chase knew that it was Bill who helped him, because he knows how the warden will feel about being helped.

While going through the pass that would lead them through the boundary and into the Midlands, they see several shadows like the first, but they don't start moving until Richard takes out the night stone at the Narrows, a place where the two sides of the boundary almost touch. Later, they realize that the night stone has the ability to summon the shadow things.

Making Zedd pause before he has even a second bite is a hard thing to do because Zedd loves to eat. Very few things would make him stop until he'd had his fill.

The elders of the Mud People think Richard is a spirit because the clouds that were hooked to him had rain, but Richard doesn't want them to think he is a spirit because he doesn't know what will happen if he calls a gathering.

Darkn Rahl is excited about going to the underworld, but to make sure that he can come back, he needs the undying loyalty of the boy. When the ritual is done, Carl has changed into the underworld beast of the Shinga, which would take him to the underworld and back.

Richard and Kahlan rescued Savidlin's young son, Siddin, from the shadow things when they realized he had gotten hold of the night stone. Because the rescue gained them nothing and because it was Savidlin's own son, he wanted them named Mud People, and threatened the elders that if they did not agree, they would have new elders who would. Richard doesn't know if he should kill them or not, but when he brings the Sword of Truth to them, he and everyone else is surprised when the sword stops dead only inches away.

He gives them back their honour.

To become one of the Mud People, two things must happen. For the first one, they have to eat the flesh of a human to gain their knowledge. Kahlan did not have to do this because she was a woman and because she did not eat meat, but Richard had no choice.

He tested her while he was eating the meat to see if she would tell him the truth. For the second thing they had to do, they had to marry one who was already one of them. Kahlan did not have to do this because she was a Confessor, but once more Richard had no choice until he tricked them into letting him out of that as well.

Rachel is Princess Violet's playmate, but Princess Violet is really mean to her. While she sends poor Rachel out at night, Rachel actually enjoys it because it means she doesn't have to sleep in a box. Most often she is seen running errands for the princess or doing something for Giller until she runs away with one of the Boxes of Orden to stop Darken Rahl.

Giller tries to get Rachel to help him hide the Box of Orden that belongs to Queen Milena. At first Rachel isn't sure what he's talking about when he tells her that Darken Rahl is a mean man because Princess Violet says he is the nicest man in the whole world, but Princess Violet also says she doesn't spill gravy on her dress when she does.

He convinces her to help him and explains that Darken Rahl is much like Princess Violet when she is nice in front of other people, but then she turns around and hits Rachel when they are alone.

After seeing Shota, the witch woman, and hearing what she would tell them, Kahlan is upset because she thinks she will end up using her power on Richard. She doesn't want to and tries to kill herself because Richard won't do it. He names her a traitor and tells her to do what she wants, and that he hopes she will go back to where they saw the gars and let them kill her. Sometime before morning, she returns and tells him that she hates that he thought those things of her and she would finally like to tell him what she is.

She asks him not to judge her until he's heard everything.
