Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The novel begins with Richard and Kahlan being married. They celebrate their wedding with the isolated and tribal Mud People. Which of the following characters was NOT with Richard and Kahlan at their wedding?

Answer: Adie

Adie wasn't with Zedd at this time. Although we don't know exactly where she is, it is most likely she is with the D'haran troops. The rest are with Richard and the Mud People.
2. What animal did 'the chimes' possess (or at least take the form of) when Richard and Kahlan were with the Mud People?

Answer: chicken

The chimes took the form of a chicken and wreaked havoc upon the Mud People. They killed Juni and an unborn child, among other great numbers of people.
3. Zedd told Richard and Kahlan a false name for the chimes in order to keep them safe. What name did he give them that also was Zedd's cat's name when he was younger?

Answer: Lurk

Zedd told Richard and Kahlan that the chimes were not loose and that the problem with the magic was because of a 'Lurk'. The name came to Zedd's mind because it was the name of his old cat.
4. Fitch and Beata were members of the Anderith nation. They were lowly workers and try to advance through the system. What ancestry do they share?

Answer: Haken

Fitch and Beata are poor lowly Hakens. The Hakens were treated very poorly by the Anders, who ruled the land of Anderith.
5. Dalton Campbell aids Bertrand Chanboor and his wife Hildemara in their quest for Bertrand's elevation to Sovereign of Anderith. What was Bertrand Chanboor the Minister of?

Answer: Culture

Bertrand Chanboor was a completely corrupt official who spent too much time with women. Dalton Campbell used him, and everyone else, to get the position of real power, the Minister of Culture.
6. In order for the chimes to be loose, the person who would have to release them would need to be Richard's third wife. It just so happens that Kahlan was his third wife (according to the ways of the spirits). Richard's first 'wife', Du Chaillu, showed up to help protect Richard with her blademasters. What people does Du Chaillu come from?

Answer: Baka Tau Mana

The Baka Tau Mana were actually the Baka Ban Mana, but since they found Richard, the Caharin of their people, their name changed to the Baka Tau Mana. Du Chaillu is the spirit woman of her people.
7. The ancient weapon that had protected the land of Anderith is called the Dominie Dirtch. It was a weapon that obliterated its victim into a pile of flesh and bones. Its power was summoned by hitting it with a mallet. According to Richard, what sense allowed the Dominie Dirtch to work?

Answer: hearing

Richard's theory was that the Dominie Dirtch could be overpassed by stuffing cotton into your ears. He believed the Dominie Dirtch, that were in the shape of bells, worked on the premise of hearing. The Dominie Dirtch, by the way, were made possible by Joseph Ander and his capture of the chimes.
8. Joseph Ander, the original founder of Anderith, wrote a book in high D'Haran (a long lost language). It was known as "The Mountain". What type of book was it that Joseph Ander wrote in?

Answer: journey book

The book's twin, "Mountain's Twin" was destroyed by the orders of Nathan Rahl, a prophet. Richard knew that this book was the only way to find a solution to the chimes' release.
9. Franca Gowenlock was murdered by Serin Rajak, a methodical anti-magic cult leader. Something of hers was worn on the cape of Stein (the representative of the Order to Anderith). What of Franca's did Stein wear on his cape along with others' with the gift?

Answer: her scalp

Stein took the scalps of the gifted that he killed. He wore them on his cape to warn others that those with the gift were in trouble. The banishment of magic was a prime goal of the Order and of Stein.
10. Near the end of the book, the messengers of Dalton Campbell were sent out on a mission to kill someone. Which character becomes the victim of these minions, yet lived because of Richard?

Answer: Kahlan

Kahlan was attacked by these messengers, and nearly died. Richard saved her by breathing into her mouth and making her spit up her blood. Richard wanted to use his magic to heal her, but a Sister of the Dark left behind a spell that would kill Kahlan if Richard tried to heal her with magic. Dalton Campbell ended up in a moral crisis and gave Richard back the Sword of Truth.

He also condemned himself, his wife, and the Chanboors to death by a disease he contracted from the prostitutes.
