Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the movie, Johnny, his parents, and their servant Sally are going to his grandmother's house. Johnny is excited about seeing Uncle Remus and the rest of the plantation, but he does not realize what is about to happen to his family. What happens to Johnny's family soon after they get there?

Answer: Johnny's father leaves them to continue his editorial work for the newspaper.

Johnny's father leaves them to go continue his newspaper work in Atlanta, Georgia. Johnny and his mother are left in his grandmother's care because his father is afraid that that it would be dangerous for them to be with him. His work is very controversial, during the time of the Reconstruction period in the United States. Johnny is confused and cries because his father has never left them before.

He attempts to go after his father when he realizes that his father is leaving.
2. Johnny is upset by the events that unfold shortly after he arrives at his grandmother's house and tries to run away at night. Who does Johnny meet in the woods, who befriends him and convinces him not to run away?

Answer: Uncle Remus

Johnny is going to run away to go to his father, but when he is walking in the woods he is stopped by the plantation workers singing:

"The leopard's pappy got the gout,
From eatin' too much speckled trout.
His mammy dreamed of polka dots-
That's how the leopard got his spots.
That's what Uncle Remus said.
That's what Uncle Remus said.
Speckled trout and polka dots-
That's how the leopard got his spots.
More, more, tell us more!"

Johnny then sees Uncle Remus and hides behind a tree. Uncle Remus is telling stories around the fire to the plantation children about Brer Rabbit. Johnny stays to listen and later Uncle Remus takes Johnny to his house. Uncle Remus convinces Johnny not to run away and Johnny goes back home.

The song "That's What Uncle Remus Said" was written by Johnny Lange,
Hy Heath, and Eliot Daniel. It was performed by the Hall Johnson Choir.
3. Uncle Remus is the most famous character in the movie and is a master storyteller! One of Uncle Remus' favorite things to talk about is Brer Rabbit. That rabbit gets in to all kinds of trouble with Brer Fox and Brer Bear, who try to trap him! What was Brer Rabbit's first misadventure?

Answer: He got stuck in one of Brer Fox's traps when he decided to leave his home in the briar patch.

Brer Rabbit decides he is tired of living in a briar patch, the place where he was born and raised. After he packs his things and is on his way to find another home he gets stuck in one of Brer Fox's traps. Brer Rabbit gets an idea when he sees Brer Bear and convinces Brer Bear that he is working to scare crows for a dollar a minute.

He offers Brer Bear to take his place and ties him up before Brer Fox gets to the trap. Brer Rabbit gets away but Brer Fox and Brer Bear catch up to him. They want to make him pay for his tricks and Brer Rabbit tells them to please do anything but throw him in the briar patch. Brer Fox is convinced that this will be the ultimate punishment because Brer Rabbit pleads and begs.

He throws Brer Rabbit into the briar patch and is shocked when he finds out he has been tricked again, because the briar patch is Brer Rabbit's home. Brer Rabbit laughs because he got away and learns to appreciate his home again.
4. One day Brer Fox and Brer Bear set up a tar baby that looks like a person to trap Brer Rabbit. How does Brer Rabbit get stuck in the tar baby?

Answer: He gets mad at the tar baby for not responding when Brer Rabbit asks him, "How do you do?"

Brer Rabbit is singing the song "How Do You Do?". In this song, the first character says "How do you do" and the all the other animals say "Fine how are you?" Brer Rabbit is singing this to the animals and naturally he expects them to give him a greeting back. However the tar baby cannot talk because he is not a real person. Brer Rabbit punches him for not responding "How are you" and discovers the tar baby is actually a trap.

The full song goes like this:

"How do you do? Fine! A friendly greetin'.
How do you do? Say it when you're meetin'.
How do you do? With everyone repeatin':
Pretty good, sure as you're born.

What goes up is sure to come down,
Penny lost is a penny found,
I'll "howdy" you, you'll "howdy" back,
This for that an' tit for tat.

How do you do?
Fine, how are you?
How you come on?
Pretty good, sure as you're born."

"How Do You Do?" was written and composed by Robert MacGimsey. It was performed by James Baskett and Johnny Lee.
5. Yes, that Brer Rabbit sure gets into trouble but he always finds a way out of it! One time Brer Fox and Brer Bear finally capture Brer Rabbit and are going to cook him. Brer Rabbit fools Brer Bear into letting him go by telling him to take him to one of his favorite spots. Where does Brer Rabbit convince Brer Bear to take him to?

Answer: his laughing place

Brer Rabbit sometimes seems to be the happiest when he is up to something. When Brer Fox and Brer Bear try to cook him, Brer Rabbit starts laughing and won't stop. He convinces Brer Bear to take him to his laughing place even though Brer Fox would rather just go ahead and cook Brer Rabbit. Brer Bear doesn't like Brer Rabbit's laughing place because it is a honey tree full of bees that attack him. Brer Rabbit laughs because he tells Brer Bear it's not Brer Bear's laughing place, it's his laughing place and seeing Brer Bear attacked by bees makes him laugh. Brer Rabbit ends up getting away again.
6. Uncle Remus is not the only friend Johnny makes while he is living at his grandmother's plantation. Which of these children is a neighbor and becomes Johnny's best friend in the movie?

7. Not everyone enjoys Uncle Remus' stories. Who tells Uncle Remus he couldn't be around Johnny because they think his stories are a bad influence?

Answer: Johnny's mother

Johnny's mother thinks Uncle Remus is a very bad influence on Johnny because Johnny is not acting like he normally does. Johnny has tried to sneak a toad in the house, adopt a dog, and also gets in a fight instead of going to his own birthday party. She doesn't realize that Uncle Remus takes the blame for many of Johnny's actions, so Johnny will not get in trouble.

She tells Uncle Remus he cannot tell stories or be around Johnny. She does eventually change her mind.

My, oh my, what a wonderful day
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay

Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder
