Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Sparkle" is the story of the rise and fall of a group of three singing sisters from the inner city, who are being raised by a hard-working single mom. Lonette McKee plays the oldest sister and lead singer of the trio. A know-it-all, she's stubborn and rebellious. What is her character's name?

Answer: Sister

Sister is the beautiful and talented sibling whose bad choices lead to tragic consequences. McKee has had an extensive career playing various roles in films such as "The Cotton Club", Jungle Fever", and "Round Midnight". She's also worked with comedian Richard Pryor in the films, "Which Way is Up?", and "Brewster's Millions".

She even has an album recording, "Natural Love", to her credit.
2. Dwan Smith plays the role of the middle sister. Bitter, resentful and longing for something better in life, she does not want to end up like her mom--working as a maid. Name her character.

Answer: Dolores

Dolores is the sister with "attitude". She, too, makes bad choices but for good reasons. Smith has been featured in television roles, most notably as Dr. Irma Foster, Dr. Tom Hardy's boss on "General Hospital" in 1987.
3. The title character in the film is a sweet, naive, and trusting young woman. She adores her oldest sister and is very close to her mom. Name the actress who portrays Sparkle.

Answer: Irene Cara

Irene Cara, the multi-talented performer, played the aptly named title character. A show business veteran, Cara had done numerous projects, including writing and co-writing songs for movie soundtracks including "Flashdance", and "Fame", in which she also starred.
4. Sparkle's boyfriend is a young man named Stix; a young entrepreneur determined to succeed in the music business. He's the sisters' first manager, and he later produces Sparkle's material. Name the young actor who portrayed Stix.

Answer: Phillip Michael Thomas

Philip Michael Thomas portrayed the determined young Stix. Thomas has had guest starring roles on various sitcoms, including the role of Eddie, Thelma's older, college-aged date on "Good Times". He's also widely known for his long-running role as Detective Ricardo Tubbs on "Miami Vice". Incidentally, Thomas had a hit album, "Living the Book of My Life", during his "Miami Vice" days.
5. Sparkle is the only sister to survive the ravages of show business success: One sister dies; the other leaves town. While her first hit record is climbing the charts, Stix receives an offer for Sparkle to perform at a famous venue. Which one?

Answer: Carnegie Hall

During a stop at Sparkle's house to tell her and her family the good news about how her record is climbing the charts, Stix announces that the next stop is Carnegie Hall. Later, while waiting for the show to start, we see him standing in front of the promotional poster.
6. Sparkle's first big break is as the opening act for a legendary entertainer. Name the legendary act for which Sparkle opens.

Answer: Ray Charles

The emcee who introduces Sparkle proclaims that she's "a great favorite of Ray's".
7. The sisters get their start singing in their church choir.

Answer: True

In the movie's opening sequence, the girls and their friends are seen singing, "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" during a church service.
8. The score for "Sparkle" was composed by a legendary artist who produced much memorable music during the 1970's. He produced the score for the movie "Claudine", which starred Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones. Name him: Curtis _________.

Answer: Mayfield

Mayfield had many memorable hits as a solo artist and as a member of the group, The Impressions. Unfortunately, he was paralyzed in a freak accident onstage in 1990. He passed away in December of 1999.
9. A "Sparkle" soundtrack was never released.

Answer: False

The "Sparkle" soundtrack was recorded by Aretha Franklin and not the movie's cast (unfortunately). Supposedly, the producers felt that Franklin would make the project more marketable and profitable.
10. In 1992, a female vocal group recorded and released one of the songs featured in the film, "Giving Him Something He Can Feel". Name the group.

Answer: En Vogue

En Vogue's song was accompanied by a sultry video, which was an obvious homage to the film. It even included actor Dorian Harewood, who played Levi in the film.
