Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Treason is a charge invented by the winners as an excuse for hanging the losers."

Answer: Franklin

Benjamin Franklin said this near the beginning of the movie, when Adams was complaining about Congress after the opening songs. After this philosophical definition, Adams responded, "Oh, I have better things to do than stand around listening to you quote yourself." Franklin said, "Aww, John, that was a new one."
2. "I've been presented with a new son by the noble stork
So I'm going home to celebrate and pop the cork..."

Answer: Livingston

"... With all the Livingston's together back in old New York." This is from the song "But, Mr. Adams." Nobody seems to want to write the Declaration, and all of the members of the new Declaration Committee come up with excuses to get themselves out of the job.
3. "Who stinketh the most?"

Answer: Rutledge

Rutledge, the delegate from South Carolina, didn't actually have any problems with independence once it became a real possibility. He did, however absolutely insist that slavery must remain legal.
4. "Why do you insist on waltzing with Mr. Adams? Good Lord, sir, you don't even like him!"

Answer: Dickenson

John Dickenson was the biggest loyalist in all of Congress. He didn't want independence, but Judge Wilson voted with Franklin in favor of it at the end of the movie. This quote was spoken in the middle of the song "Cool, Considerate Men". Incidentally, this song did not appear in the original video because President Nixon took offense to it and asked that it be removed.
5. "In your eagerness to be loved, you seem to have forgotten that Pennsylvania can not second its own motion!"

Answer: Hancock

This line was spoken by John Hancock, President of Congress. He was from Boston like John Adams, as was mentioned several times in the movie. The excuse Lewis Morris of New York gave for their constent abstention is that, in their state legislature, "...nothing ever gets done."
6. "And may my horses turn to glue
If I can't deliver up to you
A resolution on independency!"

Answer: Lee

"My name is Richard Henry Lee; Virginia is my home!" Lee proposed independence from Great Britain instead of Adams making the proposal, because John Adams was obnoxious and disliked.
By the way, Samuel Adams was not in "1776" at all.
7. "Oh, there you have me, John. I'm afraid you have always been a bit pigheaded."

Answer: Abigail Adams

This was said by Abigail Adams, John's wife. This scene was when Adams was depressed because the South walked out on him; John looked to Abigail (or some phantom Abigail, it is unknown) for support.
8. "Georgia is divided on the question of independence. You see, the people are against it and I'm for it!"

Answer: Hall

This was Dr. Lyman Hall. He later decided that his opinion should take precedence, because the people of Georgia asked him to represent them.
9. "Oh, Mr. Adams, you are driving me to homicide!"

Answer: Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson was very averse to writing the Declaration of Independence, but John Adams forced him to.
10. "Aww, sweet Jesus!"

Answer: Macnair

Macnair said this whenever the number of Congressional meetings to date was announced, or whenever a dispatch was received from (drumroll) G. Washington.
