Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was this film about?

"300" showed the Spartan civilization and their leader's call to war at the Battle of Thermopylae. Not only did the movie portray the battle but it also portrayed politics and Spartan lifestyle.
2. What did Spartan King Leonidas defeat in his childhood as part of his Spartan training?

Answer: Black Wolf

The beginning of the movie showed how Spartan men were brought up immersed in a life of violence and survival. This was to ensure that all men would become warriors.
3. Who did the Spartan King consult before going to war?

Answer: The Oracle

Due to Spartan law and superstition, King Leonidas was required to consult the Oracle before he could go to war. As it turned out, the old men interpreting the Oracle were corrupt and made a bargain with the Persians. The Oracle advised Leonidas not to go to war.
4. Who did NOT want the Spartans to go to war?

Answer: Theron

Theron was the corrupt Spartan politician who forced himself upon Queen Gorgo and then reneged on his agreement to help her get Sparta to go to war. Gorgo eventually killed Theron in front of the entire senate. At this point, Persian coins fell from his waistband exposing him as a traitor.
5. What was the technique that the Spartans used in battle?

Answer: Phalanx

The phalanx was an extremely valuable and essential Spartan tool that allowed them to protect their body while simultaneously being able to strike at the enemy. While working as one impenetrable unit, the phalanx was hard to puncture, making them difficult to kill.
6. Why did King Leonidas not allow the hunchback Ephialtes to join them?

Answer: He couldn't hold up his shield.

Ephialtes was not allowed to join the Spartans because he couldn't hold up his shield. If any Spartan could not hold up his shield, their phalanx would fall apart and they would cease to be a unit. No other reasons mattered to Leonidas except for the fact that Ephialtes' involvement in fighting would jeopardize the other Spartans.
7. The Persians were fighting only 300 men at the Battle of Thermopylae.

Answer: False

In the movie, Leonidas and his 300 were joined by 700 Arcadians. Even though they were joined together, Leonidas and his Spartans fought alone because they were the more proficient fighting force than the 700 Arcadians.
8. Which of the following was NOT something that the Spartans battled at Thermopylae?

Answer: Arcadians

The Arcadians were from a Greek city-state and were some of the men that joined up with Leonidas and the Spartans. 700 Arcadians fought in the battle but weren't used much in the movie, since the Spartans did most the fighting. The immortals were the elite fighting force of the Persians. The Persians also used archers perched upon elephants to attack the Spartans.
9. Which of the following was NOT a quote from "300".

Answer: "To the pit!"

"May you live forever" was said by Leonidas to the traitor Ephialtes. This was a big insult since the best way to die for a Spartan was in battle.
"Prepare for glory!" was said by Leonidas once was told by the Arcadian commander that they were surrounded. He said this because he knew they would soon die in glorious battle.
"I am not your Queen." was said by Queen Gorgo before she killed the traitor Theron.
"To the pit!" was NOT a quote from the movie. Although Leonidas kicked the Persian messenger into the pits, he actually yelled "This is Sparta!".
10. How did the movie end?

Answer: Leonidas and his 300 die, but 10,000 take their place.

Xerxes defeated Leonidas and his 300 at the Battle of Thermopylae, but Leonidas was able to kill many Persians. They stalled Xerxes long enough for the Spartan senate to come to its senses and send reinforcements to meet Xerxes. 10,000 Spartans commanding 30,000 Greeks were sent to battle Xerxes.
