Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the Spartan King?

Answer: Leonidas

Leonidas is a name meaning "Lion's son", and was believed to be from the line of Heracles himself. When he is not allowed to go to war for Sparta, he takes only 300 men to try to defend against the Persian army.
2. What's the name of the Persian King, self-proclaimed to be a God?

Answer: Xerxes

Xerxes calls himself the God-King, and claims to lead 1000 nations of the Persian empire. Though numbers are by far on his side in the battle, he forces slaves into war against his enemies, not real warriors.
3. What two offerings does the Persian messenger ask of the Spartan King, as a token of his obedience to the will of the God King?

Answer: Earth and Water

Despite the messenger's famous claim that "This is madness!", King Leonidas refuses, and kills the messenger and his group. It is Spartan law never to retreat or surrender, so Leonidas must refuse and prepare for war.
4. What is the "mortar" for the wall the 300 Spartans are seen building?

Answer: Persian Scouts

The Persian Emissary comes forth to speak to the Spartans and threaten them with the fact that they're surrounded by Persian scouts. While he's talking, he sees the bodies crushed between the rocks that make up the wall: the scouts have already been dispatched.
5. This character, played by David Wenham, serves as the narrator throughout the movie and is sent home as a messenger during the battle.

Answer: Dilios

Dilios is one of the 300 Spartan soldiers, until he gets sent home. After losing his left eye, Leonidas asks him to deliver their story and an unspoken message to the Queen. He later becomes the leader of the remaining Spartan forces.
6. How do the council members find out about the traitor among them?

Answer: He's found to be carrying Persian coins.

Though the viewers should know right from the beginning that Theron is a traitor (he is seen while a Persian is bribing the Ephors), the council finds out when the Queen kills him and coins bearing the face of Xerxes fall to the ground. This occurs immediately after Theron tries to denounce the Queen as an adulteress.
7. Finish the quote: "Our arrows will blot out the sun!" "Then we will fight ______." (Persian Emissary, then Stelios)

Answer: in the shade

The Persian Emissary threatens the Spartans with this, after he approaches the wall the Spartans built, and Stelios cuts his arm off. Later it is found to be true that their arrows blot out the sun - it happens twice. The first time the Persians blot out the sun, the Spartans simply hide under their shields: in the shade. The second time, they are not so lucky.
8. What is the name of the "deadliest fighting force in all of Asia"?

Answer: The Immortals

The Immortals burned down and slaughtered the village that the Spartan army passes near the beginning of the film. They covered a tree nearby in the bodies of the victims, and the only survivor (temporarily) turns out to be a small boy. They hide their disfigured faces beneath metal masks.
9. Why is the hunchbacked Spartan rejected by the King?

Answer: He cannot raise his shield.

Leonidas wants every soldier to be able to raise his shield above the neck, which the deformed man, Ephialtes, cannot do. The King states that he does not want one area of weakness in his army. Each man protects the man to his left, so adding Ephialtes to his 300 men would endanger the life of another of his soldiers.
10. What animal did the Spartan King, as a young boy, kill to survive out in the wild?

Answer: Wolf

The wolf unrealistically had red glowing eyes, according to the narrator. Leonidas killed it with perfect form and then was seen returning to Sparta with the wolf's skin around his neck. According to the narrator, nobody expected him to live through this wilderness encounter.
