Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What oceanic blockbuster film connects these four words: Amity, Shark, Quint, Orca?

Answer: Jaws

Released in 1975, "Jaws" follows the calamity befalling the fictional seaside town of Amity as their beaches are invaded by a Great White shark of voracious appetite. In an effort to hunt down the menace, the town enlists grizzled fisherman and shark hunter Sam Quint who sets out on his boat The Orca and to his ultimate gruesome demise.

"Deep Blue Sea", "The Reef" and "Sharknado" are all shark themed films, however "Jaws" is the only one to feature Quint and a boat called The Orca.

Fun fact: The mechanical shark they used in filming was prone to malfunctioning due to lengthy time spent immersed in water. Good friend to Spielberg and fellow film maker George Lucas was a victim of malfunction when the jaws clamped shut over his head, trapping him for several minutes.
2. An old story told in a new and exciting way - what film connects these four words: Pandora, Wheelchair, Unobtanium, Na'vi?

Answer: Avatar

Released in 2009, "Avatar" depicts the plight of the native Na'vi on the moon Pandora as colonists from Earth plunder their natural resource, Unobtanium. Not everything goes to plan, however, as wheelchair bound Jake falls in love with Neytiri and uses his Na'vi avatar to take down the Resources Development Administration and send them packing.

"2001: A Space Odyssey", "Lost In Space" and "Jupiter Rising" are all epic sci-fi films, however "Avatar" is the only to one to feature the Na'vi and Unobtanium.

Fun fact: Director James Cameron started work on the script as far back as 1994 but production was held until he felt CGI technology could handle bringing his vision to life. He knew that time had come when seeing the character Gollum brought to life in "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring".
3. By Grabthar's Hammer! What film am I referencing with these four words: Nesmith, Thermians, Beryllium, Sarris?

Answer: Galaxy Quest

Just before the new millennium, "Galaxy Quest" hit our cinema screens in 1999 to muted critical fanfare. Offering a fresh take on the sci-fi genre, the film follows the misadventures of Commander Peter Quincy Taggart and his crew as they are recruited by the Thermains to deal with the evil warlord Sarris... not realizing that "Galaxy Quest" is a fictional TV show with Jason Nesmith in the role of the Commander. Even the relatively simple task of securing a beryllium sphere (space ship fuel) goes gleefully awry.

"Mars Attacks", "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and "Spaceballs" are all light-hearted space romps, however "Galaxy Quest" is the only one to feature Thermians, Sarris and Nesmith.

Fun fact: The ship the Thermians build based on the show is the N.S.E.A Protector. Its serial number is NTE-3120 with the NTE standing for 'Not The Enterprise'.
4. I feel a craving for sugar... in water. Maybe it's because of the film that ties these four words together: Sonnenfield, Sunglasses, Neuralyzers, Frank. Name the film.

Answer: Men In Black

"Men In Black", the 1997 blockbuster comedy from the mind of Barry Sonnenfield, features sunglasses wearing Agents J & K as they used their mind wiping Neuralyzers in the pursuit of keeping Earth safe and oblivious to the presence of aliens... aliens like the wisecracking pug Frank.

"Blues Brothers", "The Big Lebowski" and "Reservoir Dogs" all prominently feature sunglasses - but there isn't a Neuralyzer in sight!

Fun fact: Initially Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith were very reluctant to sign on to the film and almost turned down the roles. A rewrite and a very persuasive wife convinced them both to accept.
5. Hold on to your potatoes - these four words all connect which Spielberg/Lucas classic: Ford, Thugees, Voodoo, 1935?

Answer: Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom

Way back in 1984, "Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom" served as the highly anticipated prequel to the Steven Spielberg and George Lucas collaboration "Raiders of the Lost Ark". In this installment we see Dr. Indiana Jones (played by Harrison Ford) in 1935 as he tries to retrieve stolen sacred stones from the voodoo practicing Thugees.

It is true that "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade" and "Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" are all Indiana Jones installments, however "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" is the only one to feature the Thugees.

Fun fact: Spielberg and Lucas were hesitant to make another film where the Nazis were the bad guys, so they decided to make the second film in the series a prequel.
6. All quiz and no play makes... something? One movie, four words: Overlook, Maze, Jack, King. Name the film.

Answer: The Shining

"The Shining" has been striking fear in viewers' hearts since its release in 1980. Based on the novel by Stephen King and set in the grounds of the fictional Overlook Hotel, the film follows Jack Torrance as he slowly descends into madness and heads on out into the hotel's sprawling garden Maze.

Whilst "The Nightmare Before Christmas", "The Maze Runner" and "Labyrinth" also contain mazes, jacks or kings (pumpkin) it is only "The Shining" that features The Overlook Hotel.

Fun fact: The Overlook Hotel was inspired by The Stanley Hotel in Colorado - quite apt considering the film was directed by Stanley Kubrick.
7. Is it snowing outside? Hmm... whilst I go investigate take a look at these four words and tell me the film: Boggs, Sculptures, Haircuts, Depp.

Answer: Edward Scissorhands

1990 was the year "Edward Scissorhands" graced our movie theaters and with it the now iconic pairing of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. This first collaboration of theirs followed the story of the suburban Boggs family taking and trying to habilitate a young man named Edward, who just so happened to have scissors for hands. They tried their absolute best, getting him into normal clothes and setting him to work as a gardener-come-hairdresser, but ultimately his naivety was his undoing and he had to flee - back to his isolated mansion and his ice sculptures.

Whilst the films "Ed Wood", "Sleepy Hollow" and "Corpse Bride" are all Burton/Depp outings, it is "Edward Scissorhands" that brings us Boggs, sculptures and haircuts.

Fun fact: Though the neighborhood the Boggs live in is never named, it is based on Burton's own hometown of Burbank California. This is also Vincent Price's final film role.
8. Dead or alive, you tell me the film: Detroit, Cop, OCP, Verhoeven.

Answer: Robocop

Set in a dystopian future Detroit, "Robocop" directed by Paul Verhoeven, features Peter Weller as a cyborg cop created by Omni Consumer Products (OCP) following the failure of their automated Enforcement Robot ED-209.

"Police Academy", "Detroit" and "Lethal Weapon" are all cop movies, but it is "Robocop" alone that combines the cop with Detroit, Verhoeven and the OCP.

Fun fact: Not only was the "Robocop" suit too bulky to fully fit inside a police car, it was also unbearably hot. It got so hot that air conditioning had to be installed inside it.
9. I'm sure you don't need my clothes, boots and motorcycle to tell me what film these four words relate to: Cyberdyne, Skynet, T-101, Hamilton.

Answer: The Terminator

"The Terminator" exploded onto our screens in 1984 and started an iconic franchise, catapulting its leading actor Arnold Schwarzenegger to stardom. In it we see Linda Hamilton in the role of Sarah Connor as she tries to escape the T-101 cyborg assassin sent from a dystopian future. Created by the AI defense network Skynet, part of Cyberdyne Systems, the T-101 must kill Sarah to prevent her from birthing the one man capable of bringing down their network.

Whilst the films "AI: Artificial Intelligence", "I, Robot" and "Bicentennial Man" are all robot themed, the T-101 and its 'parents' Skynet and Cybderdyne can not be found in any of them.

Fun Fact: Schwarzenegger was initially set to play good guy and Sarah protector Kyle Reese, however he had such strong opinions on how the T-101 should be played that Cameron decided to give the role over to him.
10. Don't cross your movie references! Tell me the movie linking these four words: Proton-Pack, Venkman, Slimer, Vigo.

Answer: Ghostbusters II

"Ghostbusters II" (1989) reunited the proton-pack wielding quartet five years after their initial outing. This time Venkman, Stanz, Spengler and Zeddemore must suit up to defeat Vigo the Carpathian - whilst hopefully avoiding an obligatory sliming by Slimer.

Whilst "Ghostbusters", "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and "The Ghostbusters" are all films in the franchise and feature either Venkman, Slimer and proton-packs, you will only find Vigo in "Ghostbusters II".

Fun fact: The film was a commercial and critical failure when it was released and plans for a third movie were shelved. Its cult following over the years has led to revivals starting with "Ghostbusters" (2016).
