Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1990: In what movie did Sam tell Molly, "Ditto"?

Answer: Ghost

Patrick Swayze played Sam Wheat, and Demi Moore played his girlfriend, Molly. When Molly told Sam she loved him; he always replied, "Ditto". After Sam was killed, he got Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg) to help him tell Molly she was in danger. When they were at Molly's house, Oda Mae told Molly that Sam said he loved her. Molly replied, "Sam would never say that." And Sam yelled, "Ditto. Tell her ditto." "Ghost" won two Oscars: Whoopi Goldberg for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Bruce Joel Rubin for Best Writing (Original Screenplay).
2. 1991: Who played Hook in the movie "Hook"?

Answer: Dustin Hoffman

"Hook" came out in 1991. It had a fantastic cast. Dustin Hoffman played the title role. Robin Williams played Peter Bannings (aka Peter Pan). Dante Basco played Rufio - leader of the Lost Boys. Bob Hoskins played Smee, Hook's right-hand pirate. Julia Roberts played Tinkerbell. Maggie Smith played an old Wendy Darling. Peter Pan fell in love with Moira (Caroline Goodall), Wendy Darling's granddaughter.

He left Never Land, grew up, and married her. They had two children, Jack (Charlie Korsmo) and Maggie (Amber Scott). Captain Hook kidnapped Jack and Maggie to get Pan to come to Never Land and fight him. Peter Banning had forgotten Peter Pan and had to be re-trained by the Lost Boys before he faced Hook to get his children back.
3. 1992: What movie would I have watched if I saw a cat, a bat, and a bird?

Answer: Batman Returns

"Batman Returns" was the sequel to Tim Burton's movie "Batman". His parents rejected Oswald Cobblepot (Danny DeVito) because he was deformed. They threw their baby in the sewer, where penguins found and raised him. He grew up and took on the name Penguin. Meanwhile, Selena Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer) learned her boss Max (Christopher Walken) planned to take over Gotham City. He found out she knew and pushed her out a window to kill her, but some cats saved her. She created a suit and becomes Catwoman.

Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton) didn't trust Oswald, who saved the mayor's baby from a kidnapping (which was all staged). While at Max's office, he met Selina, and they were very attracted to each other.

Max had Oswald run for mayor since they were both criminals. Later, Batman (Bruce Wayne's alter-ego) stopped Catwoman from destroying Max's business. She decided to get even with him and joined The Penguin, who wanted to kill Batman.

Of all the "Batman" movies, this one was my favorite.
4. 1993: What movie had a man dressed up as a woman so that he could see his children?

Answer: Mrs. Doubtfire

Robin Williams played Daniel Hillard, a voice-over actor. He was not responsible and one day quit his job over a disagreement in a script. He went home to throw his son, Chris (Matthew Lawrence), a big birthday bash. Miranda (Sally Field) was furious when she got home and told Daniel she wanted a divorce. They would have joint custody of the children if Daniel found a stable job and appropriate housing within three months.

Miranda told him she was putting an ad in the paper for a nanny. Daniel changed the ad without her knowing. He then called the house multiple times using his voice-acting ability to sound like different people, all bad choices. Then he called as a sweet older woman from England named Mrs. Doubtfire.
5. 1994: In what movie did Tom Hanks play a character who often told people, "Stupid is as stupid does"?

Answer: Forrest Gump

"Forrest Gump," which starred Tom Hanks as the title character, won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The film also won Best Director (Robert Zemeckis), Best Actor (Tom Hanks), Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published (Eric Roth), Best Film Editing (Arthur Schmidt), and Best Visual Effects (Ken Ralston, George Murphy, Allen Hall, and Stephen Rosenbaum).

Forrest was a little slow but had a big heart. He met Jenny (Robin Wright) when he started school as a little boy. When other kids tried to hurt him, she yelled, "Run, Forrest, run!" He had braces on his legs, but he ran, and as he did, the braces fell off.

He grew up and fell in love with Jenny, an abused child. He went to college and played football. Then he went into the Vietnam War, where he met his "best good friend" Bubba (Mykelti Williamson) and Lt. Dan (Gary Sinise). Bubba was killed in the war, but Forrest saved Lt. Dan. Lt. Dan, however, lost his legs and was angry that Forrest didn't let him die.
6. 1995: What song did Mr. Holland sign/sing for his son Cole?

Answer: Beautiful Boy

Glenn Holland (Richard Dreyfuss) was a music composer and a music teacher. The film spanned thirty years. At first, he struggled but then used rock 'n' roll to inspire his students to be interested in music. He became a popular teacher. He and his wife Iris (Glenne Headly) had a child they named Cole (Anthony Natale, but also played by Nicolas John Renner at age six and Joseph Anderson at age fifteen). They discovered that Cole was 90% deaf, and Glenn was disappointed that his son would not love music as he did. Cole and Iris learned American Sign Language, but Glenn did not, making it challenging to communicate with his son.

Cole became a teenager as the years passed, and he and his father fought. Glenn realized he had been a lousy father. He learned how to sign so that he could talk with Cole. At one of the school's concerts, after John Lennon was killed, Mr. Holland sang "Beautiful Boy" and signed it as well. He dedicated the song to Cole. The line John Lennon sang as "Beautiful Sean," Mr. Holland sang "Beautiful Cole."

The art program was shut down. Iris and Cole brought him into the school's auditorium on his last day of work. All his students (past and present) gave him a standing ovation. One of his very first students, Gertrude Lang (Joanna Gleason), who became the governor of Oregon, gave a speech praising Mr. Holland for all he had done over the last thirty years. She then joined the other students in the orchestra, performing a symphony that Mr. Holland wrote, and Mr. Holland conducted them.
7. 1996: What movie, based on a book by Roald Dahl, told the story of a gifted child with abusive parents, an evil principal, and an outstanding teacher?

Answer: Matilda

Matilda (Mara Wilson) was an extraordinary little girl. She was a genius and learned that she also had telepathic powers. Her parents (Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito) and her brother (Brian Levinson) were all uneducated crooked people. Matilda was left alone at home, so she went to the library and taught herself everything because her parents would not let her go to school even though she was six (they claimed she Was only four).

Finally, they allowed her to go to Hall Elementary School. Her father sold the principal Mrs. Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris) a car, which was a piece of junk, in exchange for letting Matilda be a student at her school. Mrs. Trunchbull was a mean teacher. She threw children and sometimes put them in the Chokey, a closet with nails sticking out everywhere and pieces of glass. Matilda's teacher, Mrs. Honey (Embeth Davidtz), adored Matilda and wanted to move her up to a higher grade after seeing how brilliant she was. However, her parents and the principal refused.
8. 1997: Which of the two men was listed as the "International Man of Mystery?"

Answer: Austin Powers

Mike Myers played both Austin Powers and Dr. Evil. He also produced and wrote the movie. It was the first in a trilogy of films. In this movie, Austin was unfrozen after thirty years. Dr. Evil was also frozen and had been unfrozen. Dr. Evil planned to hold the world hostage until he received the money he wanted. With the help of his partner Vanessa Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley), Austin Powers needed to stop Dr. Evil before it was too late.
9. 1998: Robin Williams played a medical student diagnosed as "excessively happy". What was his name (also the title of the movie)?

Answer: Patch Adams

Hunter "Patch" Adams was a doctor who found humor more important than medication. Adams went to school at the Medical College of Virginia. At the time, he was the oldest first-year medical student. The dean (Bob Gunton) instantly disliked Patch. Patch was kicked out of school because of his unconventional ways but was later allowed back when they realized his ways also worked.
10. 1999: This was the story about a mouse adopted by a human family. What was this movie?

Answer: Stuart Little

Stuart Little (voiced by Michael J. Fox) was an orphan until meeting Eleanor (Geena Davis) and Frederick Little (Hugh Laurie). When they brought him home, his brother George (Jonathan Lipnicki) was not interested in having a mouse as a brother. Also, the Little's cat, Snowball (voiced by Nathan Lane), wanted to eat Stuart. Stuart was lonely, and the Littles tried to help him find his biological parents.

The Littles met Camille (voiced by Jennifer Tilly) and Reginald Stout (voiced by Bruno Kirby), who claimed to be Stuart's birth parents. Stuart, who had now been accepted by his brother George, left with the Stouts reluctantly. As he left, George gave Stuart his favorite toy car.

The Littles learned that Stuart's birth parents were killed in a supermarket accident. They learned the Stouts were sent by Smokey (voiced by Chazz Palminteri), an alley cat, so they could hand him over to the alley cats to kill.

The Stouts loved Stuart. But Stuart returned to the home of the Littles, who were not there. Snowball let him know the Littles were glad he was gone, and Stuart left feeling very down. The alley cats were able to find Stuart. Snowball, however, felt guilty and no longer wished to harm Stuart.
