Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Spike Lee's powerful biopic about one of the most influential civil rights leaders in American history, it covers the controversial figure's story from his youth until his untimely death in 1965. What is the name of this figure, and the title of the film?

Answer: Malcolm X

Also called 'X', Spike Lee's film featured masterful performances by Denzel Washington and Angela Bassett. When this film went over its allotted studio budget, famous figures like Bill Cosby and Oprah Winfrey helped contribute some funding for its production. It remains one of the most important biopics ever made.
2. 'Hard Boiled', also known as 'La Shou Shen Tan', is one of the most heavy hitting of the action films starring Hong Kong screen legend Chow Yun Fat and directed by which Chinese-born film auteur?

Answer: John Woo

John Woo, who later 'graduated' to making Hollywood films, got his start directing and acting in Hong Kong in the late 1960s. 'Hard Boiled', which featured Chow alongside Hong Kong hunk Tony Leung, was the last film Woo made before his Hollywood debut with 'Hard Target' in 1993.
3. One of the loveliest and most gut-wrenching films of 1992 was the powerful French-made flick entitled 'Indochine'. Featuring Catherine Deneuve and Vincent Perez, the movie was based in which modern country?

Answer: Vietnam

Indochine is the French term for Indochina, the former name for the area now encompassing Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The film is a love story that involves a mother (Deneuve) and her adopted daughter (Linh Dan Pham) who both fall in love with Jean-Baptiste (Perez), a French officer.

It's beautifully filmed by Régis Wargnier, and certainly will be worth your time if you have not seen it.
4. An FBI agent with Native American blood gets embroiled in a controversial situation on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota involving the deaths of several prominent members of the tribe. What is the name of this film that features Val Kilmer in the lead role?

Answer: Thunderheart

'Thunderheart' is more than just a murder mystery, it's also the journey of one man to find his soul. Val Kilmer plays that one man, Ray Levoi, who, through the assistance of Walter Crow Horse (Graham Greene) and Grandpa Sam Reaches (Ted Thin Elk), comes to term with his Indian side.
5. 'Like Water for Chocolate' (Como Agua Para Chocolate) is a charming film about a Mexican woman whose mother refuses to allow her to get married. As a consequence, she channels her emotions into her cooking, and everyone who eats her divine food becomes intoxicated with whichever emotion she feels at the moment. Upon whose novel is this sensuous film based?

Answer: Laura Esquivel

'Like Water for Chocolate' was directed by Alfonso Arau, who you might remember as an actor from movies such as 'The Wild Bunch', 'Romancing the Stone' and 'Three Amigos' (he was El Guapo). If you have not seen it yet, please do!
6. Which of the following actors is NOT part of the knockout all-star cast in the heavy-hitting and fast-talking 1992 drama, 'Glengarry Glen Ross'?

Answer: Robert De Niro

Based on the David Mamet play, this film is worth watching just to see the performances. Alongside Pacino, Spacey and Lemmon also appear Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Alec Baldwin and Jonathan Pryce. Please view it as soon as possible, if you have not already, but be prepared for an onslaught of dialog, much of it four-letters long!
7. Clint Eastwood directs and appears in this stark revisionist western about a cold-blooded killer named William Munny, who is forced back into the trade because he needs the money. What is the title of this Oscar-winning cinematic masterpiece?

Answer: Unforgiven

Clint Eastwood assembled a distinguished cast, including himself, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris and Gene Hackman, all of whom perform admirably. 'Unforgiven' won both a Best Picture and a Best Director Oscar for Mr. Eastwood, and deservedly so.
8. Perhaps the most influential film of the 1990s, this Quentin Tarantino debut flick revolved around a group of hired thugs who have been assembled to carry out a robbery. What is the title of this innovative and very entertaining film?

Answer: Reservoir Dogs

It is hard to believe that such a substantial film could be any director's debut film, but such is the case for Quentin Tarantino and 'Reservoir Dogs'. Tarantino's success with the film is helped along greatly by the cast, featuring actors such as Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madson, Steve Buscemi and Lawrence Tierney.
9. For celebrity guest appearances, virtually no film can outdo 'The Player', featuring Tim Robbins as a down-on-his-luck film studio executive who becomes involved in a murder fiasco. Which distinguished director makes 'The Player' happen?

Answer: Robert Altman

Robert Altman is notorious for his eclectic all-star casting, but this film reaches outrageous proportions. Not only do we have Tim Robbins, Whoopi Goldberg, Vincent D'Onofrio, Richard Grant, Sydney Pollack, Dean Stockwell and several other notables in 'acting' roles, we also have guest appearances by everyone from Harry Belafonte to Cher, and from Bruce Willis to Susan Sarandon.

Heck, even Julia Roberts takes a dip. This film must be seen to be believed, or disbelieved if you prefer.
10. Rounding out my list for 1992 is a brilliant film about a well-to-do family English family who grudgingly welcome a bourgeois woman (Emma Thompson) into their family by way of marriage. What is the name of this visually stimulating film by James Ivory?

Answer: Howards End

I'm not certain that 'Howards End' should be called James Ivory's 'masterpiece', after all, he directed several brilliant films, but this film is among the best produced by Ivory and his partner Ismail Merchant. 'Howards End' features Vanessa Redgrave, Helena Bonham Carter and Anthony Hopkins alongside Thompson, a genuinely excellent cast.

I hope you have enjoyed this quiz. Please feel free to make comments on my list. What would your selections be for 1992, I'd love to know?
