Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what section of the Bronx did this story take place?

Answer: Fordham

It was 1960 and doo-wop was the sound on the streets. Mickey Mantle and the NY Yankees were everything nine-year-old Collogero thought about. But when he wasn't thinking and watching baseball he spent most his days sitting on his front stoop watching Sonny the gangster standing in front of the bar on the corner, talking to his boys.

He tried so hard to imitate every move that Sonny made to Collogero, Sonny was the coolest. He had never spoken to Sonny...before one fateful day.
2. Which of these is not one of Sonny's men?

Answer: Vinny the Wop

"Chez Bippy" was the name of the bar on the corner where Sonny and his crew hung out Tony Toupee ran the bar and was the owner in name only. It was really Sonny's place. Most of the meetings with Sonny and his men either took place in the back of the bar, in the basement or on the street corner just outside.
3. On the fateful day that Sonny first noticed him, Collogero was sitting alone on his front step. As the nine-year-old boy watched, an altercation unfolded that lead to a shooting. How many shots did Collogero see Sonny fire into the man who was hitting the car windshield with a bat, injuring the man in the driver's seat?

Answer: 4

As Collogero saw Sonny walk away with the gun in his hand, he went deaf. Sonny looked right into his eyes for the first time. His father pulled him in and up into the house and then the detectives came and took him and his father down to the corner to identify who he saw with the gun. Sonny was seventh in the line up and as Collogero stood before him the detective pressed the child to answer. Collogero did not identify him.

In his neighborhood, a rat was the lowest thing anyone could be. The language of the street echoed within him, even at this tender age.

He did a good thing for a bad man was what his father told him.
4. What was Collogero doing when Sonny first asked for the child to be brought to him at the bar?

Answer: Fixing the chain on his bike

Collogero was brought into the back room of Chez Bippy where Sonny sat with Jimmy Whispers. Sonny asked him to sit next to him and they talked about baseball. Then Sonny noticed his Yankee hat. Sonny discussed the recent Yankee loss and knew the boy was upset. Collogero was upset that Mickey Mantle supposedly cried at that loss. Sonny told him that he shoudn't be upset at Mickey Mantle crying because he makes $100,000 a year and if Collogero's father couldn't pay the rent to go ask Mickey Mantle and see what he would tell him. From that day on, Collogero never felt the same about baseball or the Yankees again.
5. What was the house number and street where Collogero Anello lived?

Answer: 667 E187 Street

His father Lorenzo met his mother Rosina at a dance and they were together every since. From the third floor window, either of his parents would lean out and be able to see what was going on in the street, as well as keep and eye on their only child, Collogero.
6. Whose shadow once killed a dog?

Answer: JoJo the Whale

With all his men around, Sonny appeared invulnerable. Collogero thought Sonny was the coolest, as he watched almost every move this man made. After they finally met, Sonny became a mentor to this boy. Lorenzo Anello was a hard working bus driver who tried very hard to set a good example and to keep the lines of communication open with his son.

But Sonny, made deep impressions on Collogero, impressions that glowed in comparison to his father's nine to five job as a bus driver and their predictable, almost poor, life style.
7. Who gave Collogero a free bag of fresh peaches and asked that he "put in a good word for him with Sonny"?

Answer: Phil

Phil the Peddler was always chasing Collogero and his friends away from his fruit for stealing fruit. Collogero noticed a change in the way Phil treated him once, Sonny took the boy under his wing. Then he noticed a new respect in the neighborhood. This was Sonny's boy. He liked the feeling. He liked it a lot.
8. When Sonny made Collogero throw the dice during the crap game, what was the first point he made?

Answer: 4

Though warned to stay away from the bar, many times Collogero went there after school and began working there getting the men coffee and drinks, to earn tips. On this day there was a crap game taking place in the basement and Sonny wanted him to throw the dice. Though not at all familiar with dice and frightened by the sight of so much money thrown in the middle, with Sonny's encouragement, he threw 11 passes in a row! Sonny decided that day that the boy's name was too long.

When he paid Collogero for the night he told him that from then on, he would be called "C".
9. Collogero's mother found money hidden in the back of his drawer. What was the amount?

Answer: $600

When his parents confronted him about this amount of money he had to admit the truth, that he had been working Sonny's crap games and that the guys gave him tips. His father became enraged and insisted on taking the boy to the Chez Bippy to return this "bad money" to Sonny.

A confrontation took place between Lorenzo and Sonny, the money was given back, and they never spoke again. But that did not stop Collogero from loving Sonny. Nothing did.
10. When Sonny and the guys went to Aqueduct Racetrack they sent Collogero to bet on one particular horse for them. He just made getting in the bets, on time. What was the name and number of the horse they bet?

Answer: #1 Kryptonite

The #1 horse was ahead all the way and Sonny and his men were already counting their winnings until they turned and saw Eddie Mush screaming out the horse's name. They immediately ripped up their tickets before the race ended. They had been mushed! "C" thought the horse still had a chance and cheered him on. He found out differently! Sonny was right, Mush was a jinx!
11. When Sonny told "C" he spent 10 years in jail, what did he say were the only three things you could do there? What did he do while he was there?

Answer: "Lift weights, play cards or get into trouble. I read."

"C" respected Sonny a great deal and told him so. He thought Sonny knew everything. To Sonny, the 10 years he spent in jail proved he didn't. Sonny tried to illustrate this to "C" whenever he could. He attempted to pass along his best advice about the workings of the street, to this young man, without getting him involved in any illegal business.

This was the life he himself had chosen, it was not what he wanted for "C". His personal philosophy of why people in the neighborhood, along with his men, treated him as they did, why they laughed at his jokes when they weren't really that funny...was it love...was it fear? He told "C" that it was nice to be loved but that he would rather be feared.

It lasted longer.
12. Who was the 16th century Italian philosopher whose works Sonny read while he was incarcerated?

Answer: Machiavelli

Sonny's philosophy was to give Collogero two eductions, one on the street, the other in school, but Lorenzo felt the what the boy saw. The cars, the money, the women, would make him go the illegal way. In one way Lorenzo was right...but in important ways, he was wrong. Lorenzo didn't have enough faith in his son's well learned principals.
13. When the motocycle gang entered Chez Bippy, why did Jimmy Whispers tell them they had to leave?

Answer: They were not dressed properly.

They had a reputation for breaking up bars but claimed to have just wanted some beers. That statement was untrue because they immediately started a fight. Sonny quietly locked the door, from the inside and simply said to them "Now you can't leave". As Collogero covered his head, a vicious fight began between Sonny's men, Sonny, and the gang and it ended when Sonny and his men beat up and threw every one of the gang out onto the sidewalk.
14. When Collogero first saw Jane on a bus his dad was driving, what song began to play on his father's radio?

Answer: I Only Have Eyes For You

"Slick" and "Crazy Mario" would never approve of this flirtation, for sure. No one in their neighborhood would. You just didn't do that. Collogero went along, but did not know why. He began to question what was unwritten law among his friends. But as he thought about his childhood friends and their bigotry he realized that in this way he was worlds apart from them.

They hated without reason, without cause, they almost inherited the bigotry and had no mind of their own. Jane was black, but she was beautiful and he wanted to see her again. Surprisingly he discovered she went to the same school as he did.
15. When Collogero told Sonny of his interest in Jane, Sonny voiced his philosophy of a man being entitled to only three great ones in a lifetime, when it came to women. What test did he tell "C" to give Jane?

Answer: The door test

He said that if she failed this test he could be assured that she was a "selfish broad" and he should dump her right away. He offered to loan Collogero his car for the date so he would make a good impression.
16. When the black teenagers came riding past their club, Slick, Crazy Mario and Aldo, in a fit of unreasonable prejudice, went running out into the street pulled them off their bikes and began beating them. Collogero was there, he tried to hang back without looking too obvious, he did not want to participate in what they were doing. He had to try to stop it and he did try. Pulling Slick off as he beat one of them with a garbage pail. His heart was breaking, breaking for his friends, for what he felt for Jane. What song was playing?

Answer: Nights In White Satin

These boys sat backwards on chairs in front of their small social club day after day. Cutting classes because they feared if they were not there, they would miss something. Their deep prejudice was not their own but passed on from their upbringing. Collogero somehow knew this.

He questioned some of their unreasonable remarks. He realized that his friends would never approve of his dating Jane, but he didn't care.
17. What was Jane's brothers' name?

Answer: Willy

Collogero waited in front of their school for Jane to arrive for their date. When she finally came she confronted him about the beating of the teenagers the day before and told him that one of them was her brother, Willy. Collogero first said he was not there.

She called out her brother's name and he stepped out of her car and he identified Collogero as being one of the culprits who beat him. It was not true. Collogero was trying to stop it and pulled Slick off Willy, he tried to explain, but Jane and Willy walked away from him.
18. When Sonny grabbed Collogero, threw him against the wall and demanded to know where they went with his car on the night of the date, why was he angry?

Answer: Later, a bomb was found under the hood of the car that thankfully, did not go off.

Collogero had just returned the car to Sonny never telling him that the date never took place. Sonny noticed it was early, but when he questioned the dejected boy, as he walked away he realized somethng went wrong. Sonny called after him and invited him to the racetrack, he just shook his head to decline and went home.
19. When "C" got home his father was angry. He had been watching from the window. What had he seen?

Answer: Collogero driving Sonny's car

He and his dad got into an argument over this. He knew his father worked hard for what they had but in his opinion, they had nothing, not even a car. He walked out, angry.
20. When his friends called Collogero to go into the car with them, what did they have in the back, on the floor?

Answer: Molotov cocktails

Because the black teens from Webster Avenue threw eggs at their social club, Collogero's friends decided to get back at them. On this night they were on their way to pay them back. Collogero didn't want to go but could not chicken out, these were his friends. Sonny had warned him about them, but what could he do now? Now Sonny was mad at him and thought he had something to do with the bomb placed in his car, his father was mad at him and now this trouble, his friends were going to blow up Jane's neighborhood, she was angry enough by the beating of her brother. Collogero felt himself being pulled down an abyss of no return.
21. Miraculously a car cut them off and suddenly Sonny pulled Collogero out of their car. When Slick tried to stop him with words, what did Sonny say to him?

Answer: "For the last time. Leave this kid alone!"

As they rode side by side in the back of Sonny's car, Collogero was deeply offended that Sonny even slightly suspected him of having to do with that bomb in his car. Sonny told him he didn't trust anyone, he couldn't. Lorenzo's voice echoed in his ears, telling him the same thing about Sonny. For the first time Collogero realized that difference between them.

He knew then that he could never live that way.
22. What was the name of the store on Webster Avenue, that was their target?

Answer: Clyde's Record Store

When they got out of Sonny's car, JoJo the Whale told Collogero that Jane was in the neighborhood looking for him. He started to run to find her and turned to Sonny as he left, "See, there really was a Jane!"
23. After seeing the carnage his friends were in on Webster Avenue, Collogero ran back to the Chez Bippy to thank Sonny for saving his life. When he rushed into the crowded party room and Sonny saw him and called out to him, who did Collogero notice?

Answer: The guy who wasn't smiling

It was as if in slow motion. The guy pulled out a gun and shot Sonny in thr head, right in front of Collogero's eyes and he was powerless to do anything. It was the son of the man Sonny shot in the street when Collogero was nine years old. The fight he thought was over a parking space.
24. What was Sonny's philosophy?

Answer: "Nobody cares."

As a respectfully dressed Collogero watched Sonny's men as they talked and told jokes in the lounge of the funeral parlor, Sonny's philosophy echosed in his ears. After everyone left, he sat alone visiting with Sonny.
25. As Collogero spent these last moments visiting with Sonny, in the funeral parlor, what two men walked in separately?

Answer: Carmine (the man in the car who was hit with the bat, long ago ) and Lorenzo Anello

Lorenzo Anello did not hate Sonny. He said that to him when he kneeled to pray. He just resented that he helped Collogero grow up too fast.
