But when he wasn't thinking and watching baseball he spent most his days sitting on his front stoop watching Sonny the gangster standing in front of the bar on the corner, talking to his boys.

He tried so hard to imitate every move that Sonny made to Collogero, Sonny was the coolest. He had never spoken to Sonny...before one fateful day.

But Sonny, made deep impressions on Collogero, impressions that glowed in comparison to his father's nine to five job as a bus driver and their predictable, almost poor, life style.

A confrontation took place between Lorenzo and Sonny, the money was given back, and they never spoke again. But that did not stop Collogero from loving Sonny. Nothing did.

The #1 horse was ahead all the way and Sonny and his men were already counting their winnings until they turned and saw Eddie Mush screaming out the horse's name. They immediately ripped up their tickets before the race ended. They had been mushed! "C" thought the horse still had a chance and cheered him on. He found out differently! He told "C" that it was nice to be loved but that he would rather be feared.

Sonny's philosophy was to give Collogero two eductions, one on the street, the other in school, but Lorenzo felt the what the boy saw. The cars, the money, the women, would make him go the illegal way. In one way Lorenzo was right...but in important ways, he was wrong. They hated without reason, without cause, they almost inherited the bigotry and had no mind of their own. Jane was black, but she was beautiful and he wanted to see her again. Surprisingly he discovered she went to the same school as he did.

These boys sat backwards on chairs in front of their small social club day after day. Cutting classes because they feared if they were not there, they would miss something. Their deep prejudice was not their own but passed on from their upbringing. Collogero somehow knew this.

He questioned some of their unreasonable remarks. He realized that his friends would never approve of his dating Jane, but he didn't care.

Collogero waited in front of their school for Jane to arrive for their date. When she finally came she confronted him about the beating of the teenagers the day before and told him that one of them was her brother, Willy. Collogero first said he was not there.

She called out her brother's name and he stepped out of her car and he identified Collogero as being one of the culprits who beat him. It was not true. Collogero was trying to stop it and pulled Slick off Willy, he tried to explain, but Jane and Willy walked away from him.

Collogero had just returned the car to Sonny never telling him that the date never took place. Sonny noticed it was early, but when he questioned the dejected boy, as he walked away he realized somethng went wrong. Sonny called after him and invited him to the racetrack, he just shook his head to decline and went home.

Because the black teens from Webster Avenue threw eggs at their social club, Collogero's friends decided to get back at them. On this night they were on their way to pay them back. Collogero didn't want to go but could not chicken out, these were his friends. Sonny had warned him about them, but what could he do now? Now Sonny was mad at him and thought he had something to do with the bomb placed in his car, his father was mad at him and now this trouble, his friends were going to blow up Jane's neighborhood, she was angry enough by the beating of her brother. Collogero felt himself being pulled down an abyss of no return.

As they rode side by side in the back of Sonny's car, Collogero was deeply offended that Sonny even slightly suspected him of having to do with that bomb in his car. Sonny told him he didn't trust anyone, he couldn't. Lorenzo's voice echoed in his ears, telling him the same thing about Sonny. For the first time Collogero realized that difference between them.

He knew then that he could never live that way.

When they got out of Sonny's car, JoJo the Whale told Collogero that Jane was in the neighborhood looking for him. He started to run to find her and turned to Sonny as he left, "See, there really was a Jane!"

As a respectfully dressed Collogero watched Sonny's men as they talked and told jokes in the lounge of the funeral parlor, Sonny's philosophy echosed in his ears. After everyone left, he sat alone visiting with Sonny.
