Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Melanie Daniels is a socialite in the city of San Francisco. She is headed to the neighborhood pet store to check on a bird that is to be delivered. Melanie is soon distracted by a passerby. What gets her attention as she turns her head?

Answer: a whistle

A boy passes her on the sidewalk and pays her an extreme compliment. Alfred Hitchcock is soon seen exiting the pet shop but is not acknowledged by the heroine. Tippi Hedren, who plays Melanie Daniels, also stars in "Marnie". It is her second Hitchcock portrayal, which co-stars the courageous agent 007, Mr. Sean Connery himself.
2. Melanie soon meets up with a lawyer, Mitch Brenner, who is looking for a present for his sister Cathy's birthday. Mitch claims he met Melanie in court but Melanie assures him they never met anywhere. While retrieving a canary that Melanie accidentally let loose, Mitch captures it with his hat. What does Mitch teasingly say to Melanie as he is putting the canary back in the cage?

Answer: "Back in your gilded cage Melanie Daniels."

Melanie is appalled at Mitch's spontaneity. Mitch confesses they hadn't meet but he had seen her in court for an incident with a plate glass window. Melanie immediately chews Mitch out for playing a charade on her. Mitch wants to know what she thinks of being on the other end of a gag.

She calls him a louse. He playfully accepts his title. Mitch Brenner is played by Rod Taylor from "The Time Machine".
3. Melanie traces Mitch's address by calling her father's newspaper. She is now attempting to deliver a pair of birds to Mitch's apartment in San Franciso. As Melanie sets the birds at his front door, she is stopped by Mitch's uppity neighbor. He tells Melanie that Mitch is gone. What day does the neighbor say Mitch would be back?

Answer: Monday

Mitch leaves San Francisco every weekend and goes home to Bodega Bay. The worrisome neighbor doesn't think Melanie should leave the birds in the hall. His advice and directions tempt her to drive 60 miles up the coast to deliver Cathy's gift herself, and give Mitch a surprise of his own. Mitch's neighbor is played by Richard Deacon who has the role of Mel on "The Dick Van Dyke Show".
4. Melanie arrives in Bodega Bay and stops at the post office to get the exact name of the little Brenner girl, to put on a card. Melanie asks the postal clerk what the girl's name is. The clerk and another employee, Harry, disagree about the correct name. What two names are given to Melanie?

Answer: Alice and Lois

Harry, who is heard in the background, is so sure her name is Lois and the clerk thinks it is Alice. The clerk finally directs Melanie to Annie Hayworth, the schoolteacher's, house. Melanie then takes a boat across the bay to the Brenners. The hospitable clerk is played by John McGovern, who is Natalie Wood's referring physician in "Splendor in the Grass".
5. Melanie goes to Annie's house and introduces herself. She tells Annie about the assumed names the clerks gave her at the post office. Annie then figures it is the reason that something doesn't get done properly in Bodega Bay. What mix up is Annie referring to?

Answer: The mail never gets to the right place.

Annie may not have much faith in the clerk, but she does refer to herself as an open book. Annie proceeds to question Melanie on her presence in Bodega Bay. Melanie's mysterious "not exactly" answers lure Annie to ask Melanie about Mitch. The direct Annie Hayworth is portrayed by Suzanne Pleshette, who also appears in "The Power" from 1968 with George Hamilton.
6. Melanie is returning from the Brenners' and heading across the bay when suddenly a gull smacks into her head and draws blood. Mitch, who is standing on the dock nearby, witnesses this and descends to help Melanie out of the boat. Melanie asks Mitch what he supposes made the gull do such a thing. What does Mitch tell Melanie that it seemed the bird had done deliberately?

Answer: swoop down on her

This is the first odd bird occurrence in Bodega Bay. Coincidentally it happens exactly in the bay. The people there lead a quiet, normal life and Mitch is thrown by the possibly malicious act. He takes Melanie to "The Tides" restaurant for first aid. Deke Carter, who owns the restaurant, is played by Lonnie Chapman. Lonnie is also in "East of Eden" with James Dean (1955).
7. Mitch is tending to Melanie in The Tides restaurant. Deke, the owner is afraid Melanie had an accident in his parking lot and will sue him. Then Mitch and Melanie have to deal with a surprise visitor. Who enters the restaurant and approaches them?

Answer: Lydia Brenner

Lydia is Mitch's overprotective mother. She recognizes Melanie from the tabloids (she states this at dinner later) and doesn't trust her son's new romantic endeavor. Lydia tells Mitch that Cathy is over at Brinkmyer's. Lydia Brenner is portrayed by veteran actress Jessica Tandy, who we all know as Miss Daisy. Jessica and her husband Hume Cronyn are both in "Cocoon", from 1985.
8. Melanie attends dinner at the Brenners', after Mitch invites her that evening. After dinner in the kitchen, Lydia confronts Mitch about Melanie's past incident in Rome. Later, as Melanie is leaving, Mitch brings this incident up and makes a joke. This sparks an argument and Melanie is upset and she pulls away. While Mitch is debating his actions with Melanie, he turns and notices a second strange occurrence with a group of black birds. What is it?

Answer: They form a long rows across the telephone wires.

Mitch notices but turns back away not suspecting too much at this point. The birds are famous for pattern behavior each time they strike. Mitch sees these birds in the evening and this may represent the darkness that is about to befall the town.
9. Melanie arrives back at Annie Hayworth's where she has taken a room for the night. Annie can see Melanie is a bit distraught and asks if the cut on her head is bothering her. Melanie tells her it isn't the cut and then Annie asks if she's met Lydia. This starts a long discussion on the Brenner background. What condition does Annie quote to Melanie, while discussing how Lydia clings to Mitch?

Answer: Oedipus

"With all due respect to Oedipus, I don't think that's the case." is Annie's quote. The word Oedipus refers to a complex. Melanie analyzes Lydia as a jealous and possessive woman. Annie declines this notion. She feels Lydia isn't afraid of any woman who would take Mitch, but of one who would give Mitch the one thing Lydia couldn't give him; love. Melanie and Annie now have a common bond. Annie once displeased Lydia too.
10. Mitch calls Melanie and apologizes for the argument. He extends another invitation, this time for Cathy's party. Up on the hillside, Mitch and Melanie get to know each other better. Painful memories of Melanie's mother surface, but before this she mentions her aunt. What is her aunt's name?

Answer: Tessa

Melanie is giving her aunt a Myna bird for her birthday and is teaching it to talk. Melanie says, "Can you see the look on my Aunt Tessa's face when this one tells her one or two of the words I've picked up at Berkley?" Mitch tells her she needs a mother's care. Mitch begins to understand Melanie better when her torn relationship with an estranged mother is focused on.
11. The next bird attack is when a flock of seagulls zoom in on the birthday party festivities. The children are playing a game and one of them is blindfolded. Who is the unfortunate first victim of this ambush, who shouts, "Hey, no touching allowed!"

Answer: Cathy

A gull has just smacked into Cathy after Annie spins her around to find a classmate. Balloons start popping and Annie gets Mitch and Melanie to help gather the children in to safety. Michelle is Cathy's best friend. Jenny is another classmate who sustains minor injuries. The other victim, who is attacked while on the ground, is played by Morgan Brittany. Morgan was in "The Initiation of Sarah", with Kay Lenz and Morgan Fairchild in 1978. John leads the children out of class in another scene.
12. Mitch talks Melanie into staying for dinner till things calm down. Lydia would now like to see Melanie be on her way back to San Francisco, but the Brenner house is invaded by sparrows. Where do the sparrows enter?

Answer: through the chimney

The small birds pour out of the hearth as Melanie and the Brenners are having tea. Later, when Al Malone, the sheriff, shows up at the house, he denies that the Brenners have an emergency on their hands. Mitch demands Al do something about the birds invading the house. Al only suggests Mitch put wire across the top of the chimney. Al is played by Malcolm Atterbury who has appearances on "Gunsmoke" and "Perry Mason".
13. Dan Fawcett, Lydia's farmer associate, is killed in his home next. After witnessing his mangled body on the floor, Lydia has just been traumatized. The bird attacks keep on and the next one happens at the Bodega Bay school while class is in session. Melanie offers to pick Cathy up for a panicky Lydia, who is recuperating from her scare. Melanie is waiting on a bench outside the school doors. What tips her off that another attack is coming?

Answer: She sees a crow flying overhead.

Melanie watches the crow's path and turns to find the equipment and playground covered in crows. She rushes inside to stop Annie from releasing the children for recess. Melanie and Annie attempt to rush the children down the hill to the hotel but the crows pick up on their footsteps and go after everyone. A very disturbing scene indeed. Those are some very brave child actors.
14. Melanie is at The Tides restaurant, informing her father, at the San Francisco newspaper, what has happened in Bodega Bay and why she is unable to come back home right away. The citizens and customers there are all in an uproar about what has happened at the school. Nobody will believe anymore than a few birds are involved. Melanie has also called Mitch with the news and, after he arrives with Al Malone from the Fawcett farm, there is yet another attack. What sets off a mass of gulls this time?

Answer: a fire from an explosion

An inebriated Mr. Ron sets himself on fire when he drops a lit match and goes up in flames. Htichcock does some fancy camera work as Melanie watches the line of fire in freeze frame shots. The gulls are drawn by noise and the light from the fire. They immediately head down and make a horrible mess of the area and of course, there is at least one more death.
15. In the middle of the hysteria outside The Tides restaurant, Melanie runs out and has to take cover in a telephone booth. While trapped inside for a harrowing few minutes, she observes many grisly acts of the avian invaders. Mitch finally arrives and gets her out of the phone booth unharmed. What happens right before he shows up?

Answer: Gulls shatter the glass.

Melanie is a bystander to a chain reaction of fury. The horse and carriage rounds the corner and becomes unhinged. A man is being mauled in a passing car. Mitch and the men are tying to help Mr. Ron. A bloody man is smashed up against the phone booth but is unable to say anything to Melanie. Two gulls slam into both sides of the booth and the cracking glass nearly cuts Melanie but she backs away quickly. This is an entertaining action shot.
