Alfred Hitchcock Trivia Questions

1. Richard Hannay runs, Being accused of murder. Which movie is this?

From Quiz
Hitchcock Haikus

Answer: The 39 Steps

This 1935 film, (loosely) based on the 1915 novel by John Buchan, has regularly been named one of the greatest British films of the 20th Century. Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) finds himself suspected of killing a beautiful spy, and must work out the meaning of the cryptic clue that forms the title of the film in order to clear his name. The opening scene involving a music hall act turns out to have more significance than was at first apparent. As was often the case, Hitchcock made a cameo appearance: he is the man tossing a cigarette box as the bus pulls up outside the theatre when Hannay is leaving it with Annabelle Smith (Lucie Mannheim), the spy whose life expectancy is shorter than they realised at the time.

2. What Alfred Hitchcock film contains the following quote? "They said when you got here the whole thing started. Who are you? What are you? Where did you come from? I think you're the cause of all of this. I think you're evil. EVIL!"

From Quiz Hitchcock Quotes

Answer: The Birds

A beautiful blonde comes to town and the next thing you know, birds begin attacking people! I hate when that happens! Bored socialite Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) pursues sexy bachelor Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) from San Francisco to his weekend home in Bodega Bay. Once there, the bird attacks progress from a solo seagull attack on Melanie to a full-scale assault on the town. After Bodega Bay is thrown into fiery chaos, survivors huddle together in a diner where Melanie is confronted by the hysterical mother (a terrific Doreen Lang) of two frightened children. "I think you're evil. EVIL!" It's a great moment, one of the emotional highlights of the movie. Melanie responds by slapping the woman across the face. This shuts the mother up but Melanie will face worse - much worse - in the final moments of this truly great film.

3. Alfred Hitchcock could build suspense like few other directors. A film released in 1963 effectively demonstrates what could happen if our avian friends decided to attack us. Which Hitchcock movie is it?

From Quiz Films Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Answer: The Birds

Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor starred in the film which is based on a short story written by Daphne Du Maurier. Normally birds are considered to be cute little creatures. Not in this film. They attack a small town with a vengeance. Hitchcock himself once said that the characters in the movie "are the victims of Judgment Day."

4. The murderer in "Frenzy" lost something on the dead corpse of Barbra; what was it?

From Quiz A Hitchcock Mixture

Answer: A pin with the initial "R"

After Rusk dumped Babs on a truck and got back to his apartment he realized that his pin was gone. Then he remembered that Babs had pulled it of. When he got on the truck, the truck drove away, and when he finally got off (at a cafe), someone saw him. This piece of evidence got him convicted. Barry Foster played Robert Rusk (aka the murderer). "Frenzy" was released 1972.

5. A woman is enjoying a shower when, suddenly, a figure lunges, stabbing her to death through the curtain. From which Alfred Hitchcock movie is this a memorable dramatic moment?

From Quiz Memorable Hitchcock Movie Moments: Reel 1

Answer: Psycho

Released in 1960, 'Psycho' stars Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh and Vera Miles. As if the murder scene is not violent enough, the tension and horror are heightened by the shrieking violin accompaniment. In the movie, Janet Leigh plays Marion Crane, a young office worker who runs away with $40,000 from her employer and drives across country to see her boyfriend. Tired from the drive, she stops off at the Bates Motel. She is greeted by Norman Bates (Perkins) who strikes her as being a nice young man, but little does she realise that his devotion to his mother is all-consuming. As she rests from her drive and takes a shower, an unidentified figure creeps into the bathroom and a sharp knife pierces the shower curtain, fatally wounding the young fugitive. More death follows as a Private Investigator (Martin Balsam) goes to the hotel seeking Marion. Eventually Marion's sister (played by Miles) goes to the hotel, and the true story of the Bates Hotel is revealed. The 'shower scene' was placed at number 1 in a list of Hitchcock's most memorable movie scenes by film critics of 'The Times' in September 2008.

6. The actress in this 1960 movie should have consulted her AAA vacation pamphlet before renting a room one rainy night. Who is she?

From Quiz Hitchcock's Leading Ladies

Answer: Janet Leigh

It is said that women everywhere were afraid to take showers for weeks after seeing "Psycho". In the movie, Janet Leigh plays Marian Crane, a secretary in a real estate office. She steals $40,000 from her employer to pay off her fiancé's debts so they can be married. On the run, she happens upon a nearly abandoned motel run by the lonely Norman Bates. She checks in, but she doesn't check out. This was Leigh's only Hitchcock film, but it may be his most famous. Janet Leigh passed away in 2004. The actress Jamie Lee Curtis is her daughter.

7. Which movie is about a chance meeting between Guy Haines and Bruno Anthony that has deadly results?

From Quiz Name That Hitchcock Movie!

Answer: Strangers on a Train

"Strangers on a Train" was released in 1951, and stars Farley Granger and Robert Walker as two strangers who meet on a train, and playfully discuss swapping murders. Hitchcock's daughter Patricia plays a supporting role as Senator Morton's younger daughter Barbara. She would play supporting characters in three of her father's films: "Stage Fright", "Strangers on a Train", and "Psycho".

8. Which silent film from 1927 is an allegory of the "Jack The Ripper" murders?

From Quiz The Wonderful World Of Hitch

Answer: The Lodger

This movie deals with a mysterious stranger who takes a room with a family during a crime wave where women are being murdered in London. "The Lodger" contains a famous scene where the tenant is pacing upstairs and the chandelier above the dining room table is gently swaying back and forth from his steps, much to the consternation of the family eating their meal below.

9. Joan Fontaine and Cary Grant starred alongside each other in which Hitchcock movie?

From Quiz The Hitchcock Collection

Answer: Suspicion

'Suspicion' was one of Hitchcock's early works and was closely followed by 'Saboteur' in 1942. 'Suspicion' is about a woman who, once married to the man she thought perfect, soon finds herself suspecting him of murder.

27. Iris Henderson Has lost Miss Froy - or has she? Which movie is this?

From Quiz Hitchcock Haikus

Answer: The Lady Vanishes

Iris Henderson (Margaret Lockwood) is an English tourist who gets embroiled in international espionage when her path crosses that of Miss Froy (Dame May Whitty), who is not the genteel retired lady she appears to be. When Miss Froy disappears from the train compartment, and the other passengers deny that she was ever there, Iris enlists the assistance of Gilbert Redman (Michael Redgrave) to locate her and (of course) make sure the vital message gets delivered via the tune of a song. Hitchcock's cameo in this film is at Victoria Station, wearing a black coat, smoking a cigarette.

28. What Alfred Hitchcock film contains the following quote? "We've become a race of Peeping Toms. What people ought to do is get outside their own house and look in for a change. Yes sir. How's that for a bit of homespun philosophy?"

From Quiz Hitchcock Quotes

Answer: Rear Window

James Stewart made four films with Hitch. Some critics would point to "Rear Window" as their greatest collaboration. Here, Stewart plays photographer L.B. Jeffries who broke his leg on the job and is confined to a wheelchair in his Greenwich Village apartment. He passes the time by spying on his neighbors, first with binoculars, then with a telephoto lens. He ultimately becomes convinced that one of his neighbors is a murderer. His confederates are his girlfriend, Lisa (the oh-so-beautiful Grace Kelly) and his insurance company nurse, Stella (the oh-so-irascible Thelma Ritter). It's Stella who offers this slice of wisdom in an early encounter with Jeffries. Having caught him spying on a beautiful, scantily clad blonde across the courtyard, Stella provides us with what may be the moral of this particularly thrilling story - "What people ought to do is get outside their own house and look in for a change."

29. What was the first attack in "The Birds"?

From Quiz A Hitchcock Mixture

Answer: A seagull that attacked Tippi Hendren's character in a boat

The seagull came from nowhere and attacked Melanie (Tippi) when she was on her way back to Mitch (Rod Taylor) in a small boat. This was Tippi's debut, and she fitted perfectly for Hitchcock because of her blond hair. On the poster it said "A fascinating new personality" under Tippi's name. "The Birds" came out 1963.
