Answer: to read to her

Duke reads to Allie every single day, hoping she'll remember little things here and there. He reads about two young kids from different families who fell in love one summer, and all the trials and tribulations that they encounter growing up. Allie suffers from dementia, which is the beginning stage of Alzheimer's disease. Allie doesn't know that this awesome love story is actually about her.

This is why Duke a.k.a. Noah is reading it to her.
2. What were the names of Noah's two friends in the movie?

3. When did Noah and Allie first meet?

Answer: June 6, 1940

They met at a carnival in the beginning of summer. Noah saw Allie with her friends on the bumper cars, and immediatley wanted to meet her. He very confidently went up to her and asked her if she wanted to dance. She played hard to get for awhile, but then gave in to his unbeatable charm.
4. When Noah and Allie are lying in the street, Noah asks her what she likes to do for herself. What does Allie say she loves to do?

Answer: paint

She tells Noah that with her busy lifestyle she gathers many thoughts in her head. She then picks up a paintbrush and puts those thoughts onto canvas. Later on in the movie, she tells Noah that she doesn't really paint anymore. He then goes out and surprises her with new paints and a canvas.
5. Who does Frank Calhoun say is the author of the poem that Noah reads on the porch every night?

Answer: Walt Whitman

Noah's father told Allie that he made Noah read Whitman's poetry all the time because of his stuttering problem. He said that he couldn't understand a word that Noah said until he started reading poetry. Noah was very embarrassed that his father was talking about his stuttering problem in front of the girl he liked. As time went by, Noah's speech greatly improved with every reading.
6. When Noah and Allie are at her parents' formal luncheon, one of her father's associates asks Noah how much money he makes. How much does Noah say he earns?

Answer: 40 cents an hour

Noah says that it's not too much, but he doesn't need many things and saves most of it. Most of the money goes to fix up a house that he always dreamed of making his own. Her parents did not think fondly of Noah because he was of no stature and just a simpleton.
7. What was the name of the big abandoned house on the water that Noah takes Allie to?

Answer: The Windsor Plantation

The house was built in 1772 and was rumored to have been the place that Francis Marrion proposed to his wife. The house was all in shambles, but Noah made the setting nice with a few lit candles. He told Allie that one day he was going to buy it and fix it up. Allie told Noah that she wanted a white house with blue shutters, a great big porch around the house, and a room overlooking the water so she could paint.
8. What was the name of the man that Allie fell in love with after Noah?

Answer: Lon Hammond

She first met Lon while working as a nurse at a hosptial for war patients. He then later courted her for awhile, and eventually proposed. He was handsome, smart, funny, charming, and most of all rich. Her parents loved everything about him. He had everything to offer her and more.
9. Finish the quote: "Why didn't you write to me? Why? It wasn't over for me, I waited for you for _______ years. But now it's too late".

Answer: seven

Allie said that she waited seven years to hear from Noah. She thought that he gave up on their relationship, when in actuality he wrote one letter a day for 365 days. She never received any of his letters, due to her mother keeping them from her. Allie then realized that he didn't give up on the relationship, and that they both never stopped loving each other.
10. Does Allie choose Lon after realizing that being with Noah was a mistake?

Answer: No

Of course not, Allie and Noah were destined to be with each no matter what. All it took for them was one summer and they knew instantly that they were head over heels in love. Allie went back to Noah and eventually got married, had kids and grew old with him. Allie then learned that she was suffering from dementia, and had Noah read her a book about their lives, hoping she could remember from time to time.

As fate would have it, they finally passed away lying together in bed holding each other.
