Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Just before Sarah enters the labyrinth she meets Hoggle, who is spraying down the fairies. As one falls to the ground Sarah picks it up and the fairy bites her immediately. Sarah is shocked and Hoggle asks, "What did you expect fairies to do?" What is Sarah's reply?

Answer: "I thought they did nice things like, like granting wishes."

Sarah has been sent into this strange fairy-tale by the Goblin King, who has taken her baby brother Toby. She has to make it through the labyrinth in order to rescue him. Unfortunately for Sarah, she assumes everything here will be the same as everything she has read in her fantasy books.

She will need all the help she can get from the friends she makes on this journey. Hoggle is the first friend she makes. Hoggle is a cowardly dwarf who has never had a real friend and is unsure what to make of Sarah or her friendship.
2. While on her journey through the labyrinth, Sarah runs into two pairs of knights guarding two separate doors. Sarah must solve a riddle to decide which door to take. The knights tell her one of the doors leads to the castle and the other one leads where?

Answer: To certain death

The knights appear at a dead end and the dead end is now behind Sarah. To continue on she must figure out which door she needs to take. The knights tell Sarah they know where the doors lead. But she may only ask one of them. The tricky part is one of them always tells the truth and the other one always lies.
3. When Jareth sees Sarah in the oubliette he is very angry. Why is he so mad?

Answer: She shouldn't have gotten that far.

After choosing which door to take from the knights, Sarah falls down a hole filled with 'helping hands'. They ask her whether she'd like to go up or down. She chooses down and winds up in the oubliette. It is never said whether she chose the correct door or not. I believe she did choose the right door since the 'helping hands' did say she could have gone up and then she wouldn't have been trapped.
4. Hoggle shows up in the oubliette to lead Sarah back to the beginning. With a little bribery she convinces Hoggle to take her as far as he can. He uses a piece of wood (a door) he finds on the floor to magically make an exit appear. However on the first try he does not reveal the exit. What does he reveal?

Answer: A broom closet

Hoggle was asked by Jareth (The Goblin King) to lead Sarah back to the beginning. Sarah protests that she is not ready to give up. Hoggle is a collector of trinkets, so Sarah offers him her bracelet and with a little persuasion Hoggle agrees to take Sarah as far as he can. Hoggle lifts a board (door) off the floor and puts it against the wall when he opens it a mop and buckets tumble out. Hoggle then says, "Oh damn! Broom closet, well can't be right all the time."
5. Continuing on through the Labyrinth, Sarah runs into Jareth. They have a conversation about her journey so far. When she claims his labyrinth is a piece of cake he ups the stakes and changes the time on the clock. Sarah then says a line she utters many times throughout the movie. Jareth replies, "You say that so often. I wonder what your basis for comparison is." What is Sarah's famous line?

Answer: "It's not fair."

Sarah doesn't seem to understand that things here and in the real world don't always go the way you want them to. Sarah has already said "it's not fair" to her step-mother when she is scolded for being late, and when she realizes someone was changing the marks she was making to show where she'd been.
6. Once Sarah and Hoggle safely make it away from Jareth, they meet a strange old man who dispenses advice. What makes this man so strange?

Answer: He has a talking bird for a hat.

Sarah and Hoggle have escaped from a machine that Jareth sent after them called 'The Cleaners' by escaping up a ladder. This is where they meet the Wiseman, who has a talking bird as his hat. As you may recall, the Wiseman and his hat bicker throughout the whole conversation with Sarah and Hoggle.

As they leave them behind the bird says, "It's so stimulating being your hat." This is one of my favorite lines from the movie.
7. Continuing on, Sarah comes upon a beast named Ludo who is being tortured by goblins. How does Sarah save this gentle giant?

Answer: She throws rocks at the goblins.

Ludo is the second of three friends Sarah makes on her journey. Ludo is a gentle giant who can call the rocks, or as he says, "rocks friends". When he summons the rocks, Sarah uses them to get the goblins to leave. Sarah seems nervous to let Ludo down since he looks big and ferocious and so far she has always assumed things based on appearances or what she knows. Since he seems friendly, she does decide to let him down.

She was correct not to judge him by the way he looks as he turns out to be a sweet and caring beast.

He then joins Sarah on the quest to get her brother back.
8. Soon after Sarah saves Ludo she runs into some trouble with a nasty gang of creatures known as Fireys. Hoggle ends up saving Sarah from them. What does Sarah do to Hoggle that lands them at the bog of eternal stench?

Answer: She kisses him.

Hoggle hears Sarah's cries for help. He goes rushing of to save his newly found friend but is stopped by Jareth. Jareth informs Hoggle that he no longer wants him to take Sarah back to the beginning but instead would like him to give Sarah a peach. Hoggle worries that it will hurt Sarah. Jareth senses that Hoggle and Sarah have become friends and threatens Hoggle.

He says, "If she ever kisses you I'll make you a prince. Prince of the land of stench!"
9. While venturing through the land of stench, Sarah and her friends meet Sir Didymus and his trusty 'steed'. What is Sir Didymus' sacred oath?

Answer: No one shall pass without his permission.

Sir Didymus is the third and final friend Sarah meets. He is spunky and loyal with a big attitude. He is also the guardian of the bridge that is the exit out of the bog of eternal stench. Sarah logically figures out that his oath is nothing more than a riddle. All she has to do to get across the bridge is ask for his permission. Sir Didymus is bewildered but does give his permission.

He joins Sarah, Ludo and Hoggle on their way to the castle.
10. Sarah and her friends finally make it to the castle where she proceeds on alone. At the end of it all Sarah finally gets to confront Jareth. Sarah starts the famous 'you have no power over me speech' but before she finishes, Jareth interrupts and offers her what?

Answer: Her dreams

This is the final scene in the movie with David Bowie, who plays Jareth. He seems to have fallen in love with Sarah and tries to convince her that everything he has done thus far had been for her. As Sarah begins her speech she is stopped by Jareth, who pulls out a crystal and says, "Look what I'm offering you, your dreams." Sarah struggles to remember the last line of the speech. Once she says the words "you have no power over me", the fantasy world collapses around her and she finds herself safe in her bedroom.
