Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At number 10 on the AFI list was a farce that included a re-enactment of the famous Burt Lancaster/Deborah Kerr romantic romp in the surf beach in "From Here to Eternity". What was the name of this 1980 movie?

Answer: Airplane

The Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker airline disaster movie spoof had an all-star cast including the late Ethel Merman in her last film role. When the flight crew of a passenger airplane became disabled from eating bad fish, Ted Striker, an ex-pilot who had lost his nerve and was afraid of flying, was called on to land the airline.

The pilot role played by basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was originally to be played by former baseball player Pete Rose.
2. In what number 9 ranked 1967 movie did a young man use a large crucifix as a weapon to disrupt his girlfriend's wedding to another man?

Answer: The Graduate

Recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock, played by Dustin Hoffman, had a brief affair with an older woman before falling in love with her daughter. "The Graduate" made a star out of Hoffman, and the songs "Sounds of Silence" and "Mrs. Robinson" topped the charts for Simon & Garfunkel.
3. In a 1934 classic, a spoiled heiress ran away from home and along the way was befriended by a reporter. In what number 8 rated film did we learn that the best way for a female hitchhiker to get a ride was to lift a skirt above the knee?

Answer: It Happened One Night

As the most highly awarded romantic comedy of its time, the film swept the major 1935 Academy Awards gathering Best Actor Oscars for Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, Best Director to Frank Capra as well as Oscars for Best Writing and Best Picture.
4. In what 1970 film rated number 7 did a huge football player spit water in the face of the opposing team's small manager during halftime?

Answer: MASH

"MASH", an abbreviation for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, tracked the hilarious adventures of two irreverant surgeons during the Korean War. Captains Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce and "Trapper" John McIntyre tried to have a good time while also saving the lives of wounded soldiers.

The anti-war satire was directed by Robert Altman, who, after great difficulties with Fox Studio stated, "This film wasn't released - it escaped." One of Hawkeye and Trapper John's ideas to boost morale was to have a football game.

The water-spitting gigantic football player was played by 6'8" four time NFL Pro Bowl defensive lineman Ben Davidson. Radar, the team manager, was played by 5'5" actor Gary Burghoff, who went on to play the character in the successful television series.
5. Ranked at number 6 on the AFI list was a movie that included a scene where a man and his horse were hanged. What is the name of the 1974 western?

Answer: Blazing Saddles

The wacky Mel Brooks film was one of the top earning westerns of all time. In an effort to cheat the citizens of Rock Ridge out of their land, a crooked Attorney General Hedley Lamarr, played by comic Harvey Korman, sent Bart, an African-American, to be the town's first black sheriff.

Although at first despised by the townspeople, Bart teamed up with the Waco Kid to thwart Lamarr's plan. Late night television host Johnny Carson turned down the role of the Waco Kid in this thrice Oscar nominated comedy classic.

The part eventually went to Gene Wilder after actor Gig Young turned up drunk on the set and passed out.
6. A war between the fictional kingdoms of Freedonia and Sylvania was the setting for which 1933 film ranked number 5 on the AFI list?

Answer: Duck Soup

Geopolitics and war are not normally funny subjects, that is unless the Marx Brothers are involved. Rufus T. Firefly, played by Groucho Marx, was the dictator of Freedonia and his idea of shortening workers' hours was to shorten their breaks.
7. In the number 4 rated film, Alvy was a neurotic New Yorker reminiscing about a past relationship with a free-spirited girl. What was the name of the 1977 Oscar-winning movie?

Answer: Annie Hall

Alvie Singer, played by Woody Allen, was a highly neurotic, death-obsessed New York comedian who fell hopelessly in love with the beautiful, carefree Annie Hall, played by Diane Keaton. "Annie Hall" chronicled their mercurial relationship from beginning to end.

It was one of the few comedies to win a Best Picture Academy Award. Woody Allen won two Oscars for directing and writing the screenplay while his real-life lady friend Diane Keaton won the Best Actress award.
8. In which 1964 nuclear war satire ranked number 3 by the AFI did a mad U.S. Air Force general send his bombers to destroy the Soviet Union?

Answer: Dr. Strangelove

Officially titled "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" was a Stanley Kubrick satire on the Cold War starring Peter Sellers in multiple roles including the title character. The mad general, Jack D. Ripper was played by Sterling Hayden, and the unforgettable B52 pilot Major T.J. 'King' Kong by character actor Slim Pickens.
9. Finishing in the AFI number 2 spot was a 1982 movie about a moody actor. In which film did the actor's agent tell him, "No one will hire you"?

Answer: Tootsie

A temperamental and difficult male actor could not find work until he landed a role on a television soap opera in a female role. Dustin Hoffman played Michael Dorsey and Dorothy Michaels. Sydney Pollock directed the film and played the part of Hoffman's agent.
10. In a 1959 classic, two musicians had the misfortune of accidentally witnessing the St. Valentine's Day massacre. Which film was the AFI's all-time top ranked comedy?

Answer: Some Like It Hot

The legendary Billy Wilder directed Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe in perhaps their greatest comedic roles. After witnessing the infamous event, Curtis and Lemmon's characters escaped the mob by disguising themselves as female musicians Josephine and Daphne and joining an all-girl orchestra.

They met up with band member Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, played by the incomparable Marilyn Monroe, for a series of hilarious adventures. Curiously, and perhaps because the film is from the 1950s and in black and white, it is only rated in the mid-seventies by the Internet Movie Database.
