Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paul Newman starred in many movies with his wife, Joanne Woodward. In one instance, he directed her - but did not appear in the cast. Which movie was that?

Answer: Rachel, Rachel

All of the other choices include both Newman and Woodward in the cast.
"Rally" is a comedy, "Paris" and "Bridge" are romantic dramas. "Rachel" - an early effort by Newman - was well-received.
2. Robert Redford has had a fine career as both an actor and a director. Which of these movies was his first directorial effort?

Answer: Ordinary People

All are Redford efforts - and all are good movies. "People", his first effort, was impressive. Donald Sutherland, Timothy Hutton and a surprisingly dramatic Mary Tyler Moore in the cast.
3. John Huston isn't a "pure fit" in this category - he's more of a director who has also done some acting. Which of these classic Bogart movies was NOT directed by Huston?

Answer: High Sierra

"Sierra" was Raoul Walsh. The others are classics - especially the legendary "Falcon" and "Treasure".
4. Orson Welles was a man who was more interested in directing than acting - but did both. He was both actor and director in "Citizen Kane"; in which of these other movies was he both actor and director?

Answer: Touch of Evil

"Third" was directed by Carol Reed; Welles had a relatively small acting role. "Compulsion" had him playing a lawyer in a Leopold-Loeb scenario, but he did not direct. "Ambersons" came right after "Kane"; Welles directed, but was not in the cast. "Evil" is the only one of the choices that had him in both roles.
5. Which was the first Western directed by Clint Eastwood?

Answer: High Plains Drifter

Am I the only person who wasn't impressed by these movies? "Pale Rider" was shot in the dark.
6. Jack Lemmon directed long-time friend and co-star Walter Matthau in what movie?

Answer: Kotch

All the choices were Matthau vehicles. For "Kotch", Lemmon stepped behind the camera - not something that the prominent actor often did.
7. Which movie was directed by Penny Marshall?

Answer: A League of Their Own

Famous for "The Odd Couple" and "Laverne and Shirley", Marshall found directing more to her liking. Tom Hanks, Madonna. "There's no crying in baseball!" ("Tate" was a directing effort by Jodie Foster.)
8. Ron Howard directed the excellent "Apollo 13" (before the excellent "Beautiful Mind"). Who was NOT in the cast of "Apollo 13"?

Answer: Matt Damon

Bacon and Hanks were in space; Harris was on the ground. (Damon was somewhere else.) "Andy Griffith" and "American Graffiti" now seem long ago and far away.
9. Rob Reiner directed the excellent "A Few Good Men". Who spoke the famous words: "You can't handle the truth!"?

Answer: Jack Nicholson

Fine movie, very well done. A far cry from the days of "Meathead" in "All in the Family".
10. Elia Kazan is known as a director, but he appeared as an actor in what classic crime film?

Answer: City for Conquest

Before finding fame as a director in films such as "On The Waterfront", Kazan did some acting - including a role in this James Cagney drama.
