Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan first worked together on "Joe Versus the Volcano" in 1990. They followed up with "Sleepless in Seattle" in 1993... And then what?

Answer: You've Got Mail

The chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks made for three very entertaining films in the 1990s. While "Joe Versus the Volcano" (1990) was not as successful at the box office as their two subsequent films, it was quite possibly the more entertaining in terms of quirkiness.

In 1993's "Sleepless in Seattle", Hanks and Ryan only shared about two minutes worth of screen time, as their characters followed separate paths to finding each other. Nora Ephron directed both "Sleepless in Seattle" and their 1998 film "You've Got Mail", about an independent book store owner trying to make it against the big box store that has opened in the neighbourhood...and the improbable and impractical relationship between the two owners that begins through AOL.
2. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton made eleven movies together, first meeting on screen in "Cleopatra" in 1963, during which they began a scandalous romance... And then what?

Answer: The V.I.P.s

When Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton worked together on the set of "Cleopatra", they began a scandalous romantic liaison...scandalous because they were both married to other people. Taylor divorced Eddie Fisher on March 6th (of 1964), and married Burton on March 15th. They stayed together until June 26th, 1974, got divorced, then remarried for a much shorter duration (October 10, 1975 - July 29, 1976).

"The V.I.P.s" included a star-studded cast (apart from Taylor and Burton) and the plot revolved around a number of VIPs waiting for their flights at London Heathrow Airport (delayed due to fog, of course).

During their time together, the couple made their eleven movies:

1. "Cleopatra" (1963)
2. "The V.I.P.s (1963)
3. "The Sandpiper" (1965)
4. "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966)
5. "The Taming of the Shrew" (1967)
6. "Doctor Faustus" (1967)
7. "The Comedians" (1967)
8. "Boom" (1968)
9. "Under Milk Wood" (1972)
10. "Hammersmith is Out" (1972)
11. "Divorce His - Divorce Hers" (1973) - made for TV
3. Robert Redford and Paul Newman were great bad guys together in 1969's "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"... And then what?

Answer: The Sting

"The Sting" managed to win Best Picture (and six other Oscars) for its clever story of two con men pulling an intricate con on a mutual enemy.

Paul Newman and Robert Redford only did these two movies together, but they were so good together that they regularly make it onto internet 'best movie duos' lists. In both "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969) and "The Sting" (1973), Newman and Redford are criminals that you want to root for. These movies are great to watch, and in no small part because of the relationship between the characters played by these two excellent actors.

After Newman's death from cancer 2008, Robert Redford said, "There is a point where feelings go beyond words. I have lost a real friend. My life - and this country - is better for his being in it."
4. Longtime friends Ben Affleck and Matt Damon did their first film together with "Field of Dreams" in 1989... And then what?

Answer: School Ties

"School Ties" was a 1992 film starring Brendan Fraser as a Jewish student at a school that had some decidedly antisemite sentiments. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were among the cast of prejudiced fellow classmates.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were childhood friends (meeting when Ben was 8 and Matt was 10) whose lives and careers have paralleled each other for decades. As teenagers, they went together to New York to audition for acting jobs, and they both landed their first film roles as extras in "Field of Dreams" (1989).

For both of them, their acting careers didn't really take off until their success with "Good Will Hunting" (1997), for which they shared the writing credit, and which won them the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

The first 10 movies that they have worked on together:

1. "Field of Dreams" (1989)
2. "School Ties" (1992)
3. "Glory Daze" (1996)
4. "Chasing Amy" (1997)
5. "Good Will Hunting (1997)
6. "Dogma" (1999)
7. "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" (2001)
8. "The Third Wheel" (2002)
9. "Stolen Summer" (2002)
10. "Jersey Girl" (2004)

In that time they have also collaborated as film producers.
5. Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller have done multiple films together. They were in 1996's "The Cable Guy" as supporting actors, followed by 1998's "Permanent Midnight"... And then what?

Answer: Meet the Parents

"Meet the Parents" was a terrific matching of Ben Stiller with Robert de Niro, as Stiller's character must prove himself to his soon-to-be father-in-law, who just happens to be a former CIA agent.

Ben Stiller got an earlier start to his career than Owen Wilson, and in fact, Ben gave Owen his first movie role with "The Cable Guy" (Stiller not only acted in it, but he co-wrote the screenplay). They have since worked together multiple times, and in the tradition of the 'Rat Pack' of the '60s and the 'Brat Pack' of the '80s, they are part of the 'Frat Pack', including Jack Black, Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, and Steve Carell.

Their first few films include:

1. "The Cable Guy" (1996)
2. "Permanent Midnight" (1998)
3. "Meet the Parents" (2000)
4. "Zoolander" (2001)
5. "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001)
6. "Starsky & Hutch" (2004)
7. "Meet the Fockers" (2004)
8. "Night at the Museum" (2006)
9. "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" (2009)
10. "Little Fockers" (2010)
6. Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy lit up the silver screen nine times together, beginning with two movies released in 1942: "Woman of the Year" and "Keeper of the Flame"... And then what?

Answer: Without Love

"Without Love" had Hepburn and Stacy as a widow and a scientist who marry each other for practical purposes during wartime, not expecting that their struggles would bring them to fall in love with each other.

Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn had an 'on the side' relationship for a quarter of a century, and Tracy remained married to his wife Louise until the day he died. It was, perhaps, the most poorly kept secret in Hollywood. Tracy would not divorce his wife for a few reasons, foremost among them were his religious beliefs (he was Roman Catholic) and his deaf son.

Hepburn, as well, had no interest in settling down to be anyone's wife, preferring to be an independent woman.

Either way, their off-screen romance made for some terrific on-screen chemistry in their nine movies:

1. "Woman of the Year" (1942)
2. "Keeper of the Flame" (1942)
3. "Without Love" (1945)
4. "The Sea of Grass" (1947)
5. "State of the Union" (1948)
6. "Adam's Rib" (1949)
7. "Pat and Mike" (1952)
8. "Desk Set" (1957)
9. "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967)
7. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter have done a number of (mostly weird or creepy) films together, beginning with "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Corpse Bride" in 2005... And then what?

Answer: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" is a Stephen Sondheim musical that portrays a 'revenge for the sake of love' horror story. Depp plays the title character, while Bonham Carter plays Mrs. Lovett, the woman who helps him dispose of the bodies.

The acting relationship between Depp and Bonham Carter is primarily related to Bonham Carter's husband, Tim Burton. Five of the movies listed below were directed by Tim Burton, who is known for doing multiple projects with actors and crew that he likes (or has had success with).

The first six movies that Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter worked together in are:

1. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005)
2. "Corpse Bride" (2005)
3. "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (2007)
4. "Alice in Wonderland" (2010)
5. "Dark Shadows" (2012)
6. "The Lone Ranger" (2013) - NOT directed by Tim Burton.
8. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore were sweetly romantic in 1998's "The Wedding Singer"... And then what?

Answer: 50 First Dates

In "50 First Dates" (2004), Sandler plays a commitment-shy man who believes he has found his perfect woman, but it turns out that she (Barrymore) has short-term memory loss, forgetting him after every day.

Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler first worked together in "The Wedding Singer" (1998) and kicked off a terrific friendship that they have maintained over the years. Unlike some other onscreen couples, the two have never dated or 'hooked up', according to a 2014 interview with Chelsea Handler. After ten years, they got together again for their third romantic comedy, "Blended", which was released in May of 2014.
9. "Grumpy Old Men" Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau worked together for the first time in "The Fortune Cookie" in 1966... And then what?

Answer: The Odd Couple

"The Odd Couple" brought together Lemmon and Matthau in an incredibly funny movie that had two polar opposites trying to live together - Lemmon as the fastidious Felix Ungar, and Matthau as the slovenly Oscar Madison.

Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon forged a deep friendship and two highly successful careers over a nearly 40-year association. They both succumbed to cancer, only a year apart from each other. Matthau died on July 1st, 2000, while Lemmon passed away on June 27th, 2001.

Here are the dozen films that Matthau and Lemmon worked together on:

1. "The Fortune Cookie" (1966)
2. "The Odd Couple" (1968)
3. "Kotch" (1971)
4. "The Front Page" (1974)
5. "Buddy Buddy" (1981)
6. "JFK" (1991)
7. "Chaplin" (1992)
8. "Grumpy Old Men" (1993)
9. "The Grass Harp" (1995)
10. "Grumpier Old Men" (1995)
11. "Out to Sea" (1997)
12. "The Odd Couple II" (1998)
10. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced together in ten different films, with their first being 1933's "Flying Down to Rio"... And then what?

Answer: The Gay Divorcee

In "The Gay Divorcee" (1934), Ginger Rogers' character is trying to find a way out of her marriage, and sets up an elaborate plot to get caught 'cheating' - but things don't go as planned.

In their first movie together ("Flying Down to Rio") Rogers and Astaire were in supporting roles and Dolores Del Rio was the star. After that, their next nine movies together had them as the headliners. They became top box office draws, deciding to end their partnership solely for the opportunity to achieve success individually. Thus their 10-year gap between their ninth and tenth movies.

And here they are:

1. "Flying Down to Rio" (1933)
2. "The Gay Divorcee" (1934)
3. "Roberta" (1935)
4. "Top Hat" (1935)
5. "Follow the Fleet" (1936)
6. "Swing Time" (1936)
7. "Shall We Dance" (1937)
8. "Carefree" (1938)
9. "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle" (1939)
10. "The Barkleys of Broadway" (1949)
