Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Soon after beginning his ministry, Jesus made his way to Capernaum, where he was met by a Roman centurion. The centurion said to Jesus, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly." Jesus replied, "I will come and heal him." How did the centurion respond?

Answer: "...only say the word, and my servant will be healed."

The story of the centurion happens in Matthew 8:5-13 (and in Luke 7:1-10).

After offering to come and heal the centurion's servant, the centurion replied (Mat v.8-9), "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man of authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

Jesus touted this man's faith to his followers, saying (Mat v.10), "Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith."

With such strong faith in Jesus' power to heal, the centurion knew it would only take a word to accomplish it, and that Jesus wouldn't have to go in person.
2. He proclaimed the coming of Jesus, but after being imprisoned, he sent two of his own disciples to question Jesus, asking, "Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?" Who was this man?

Answer: John the Baptist

The passage with John the Baptist in prison is in Matthew 11:1-19 (and in Luke 7:18-35).

John had been languishing in King Herod's prison for somewhere between 12 and 18 months when he began hearing word of Jesus' ministry. John had, of course, been the one to prepare the way for Jesus, calling for people to repent because the Kingdom of God was at hand. When he first saw Jesus, he immediately declared him to be the lamb who takes away the sins of the world. Maybe he was expecting something else from Jesus, as many people did, when thinking of the promised Messiah.

Jesus' response to John's question was to perform many miracles, and then send John's disciples back with the message, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me." (Mat v.4-6)
3. After feeding the five thousand, Jesus went up to pray alone on the mountain, sending his disciples ahead to cross the Sea of Galilee (in a boat). Just before dawn, Jesus joined them, walking out to them on the water. They were scared, but Jesus said, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid." One of the disciples asked, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." Which disciple walked on water, then began to sink when he began to doubt?

Answer: Peter

Matthew 14:22-33 is the passage in which this story can be found (and in Mark 6:45-52 and Luke 8:22-25, without Peter's bit).

Jesus answered Peter's 'challenge' by saying "Come." (Mat v. 29)

At first, everything was fine, but as he approached Jesus, Peter became aware of the wind and began to fear. He called, "Lord, save me." (Mat v.30)

Jesus was quick to respond, reaching out to take his hand. He was also quick to admonish Peter: "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"
4. A Canaanite woman came to Jesus seeking to have her daughter dispossessed of a demon, but Jesus ignored her. When she knelt before him, Jesus said, "It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." What was the woman's response?

Answer: "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."

The story of the Canaanite woman is found in Matthew 15:21-28 (and also Mark 7:24-30)

After Jesus ignored her initial plea, the disciples came to Jesus begging that he send the woman away, because she wouldn't leave them alone. To the disciples, Jesus responded (Mat v.24), "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

After the woman responded to Jesus' statement about the bread (meant for Israel), her faith moved Jesus to respond, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire."
5. As Jesus was traveling to Jerusalem he was met by ten lepers who cried out, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." Jesus told them to go and present themselves to the priests. Once there, they were cleansed of their affliction. How many of them came back to hear Jesus say, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well"?

Answer: One

The story of the ten lepers is found in Luke 17:11-19.

Only one of the lepers, once he realized he had been healed, turned back to where he had seen Jesus, praising God loudly. He prostrated himself in front of Jesus, thanking him.

Jesus noticed that the one returning (now cleansed) leper was a Samaritan, and said, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" (v. 17-18)
6. A rich young man approached Jesus and said, "Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?" And Jesus responded that he must keep the commandments. The young man continued, "All these I have kept. What do I still lack?" Jesus replied, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." Did the rich young man do as Jesus said?

Answer: No

The story of the rich young man is found in Matthew 19:16-30 (and in Mark 10:17-31 and Luke 18:18-30)

Following the ten commandments was easy for the young man, but to give up his riches, that was impossible for him. After the young man went away sorrowfully, Jesus continued to speak to his disciples, saying, "Truly I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God." (Mat v.23-24)

Astonished and discouraged, the disciples asked who could actually be saved? Jesus' response was, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Mat v.26)
7. This man's faith prompted him to repent of his sin, give away half of what he had, and promise to repay fourfold anyone he had defrauded. To whom did Jesus say, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost"?

Answer: Zacchaeus

The story of Zacchaeus is found in Luke 19:1-10.

Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector of Jericho, but also happened to be very short. He was 'seeking to see who Jesus was, ... So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.' (v. 3-4)

Jesus called out to Zacchaeus by name, and then went to stay at his house. As tax collectors were known to be corrupt (collecting more taxes then they should, and keeping the difference), the crowds grumbled about Jesus staying in the house of a sinner. Hence the statement that, "the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." (v. 10)
8. He was one of Jesus' twelve disciples, yet he still chose to betray him for the price of 30 silver pieces. Which disciple was he?

Answer: Judas

The motivation behind Judas' betrayal of Jesus is unclear, as each account in the Gospels ascribes a slightly different possibility. In Matthew 26:14-18, Judas goes to the chief priests and says, "What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?" In the Gospel of Mark 14:10-11, Judas goes to the chief priest in order to betray Jesus, and the priests subsequently offer him money. Luke 22:3-6 and John 13:27 state that Satan enters into Judas.
9. Each of the Gospels mentions the two thieves that were crucified alongside of Jesus, and in Matthew and Mark it says that they both mock him. In the Gospel of Luke, however, it says that both of the thieves ask to be remembered when Jesus came into his kingdom.

Answer: False

The passage with the thieves speaking to Jesus is found in Luke 23:39-43.

One of the thieves angrily said (v. 39), "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

The other thief rebuked the first, saying (v.41), "...we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." He then went on to ask (v.42), "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

And showing that even a last-minute repentance can bring salvation, Jesus responded to the thief, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." (v. 43)
10. Three days after the crucifixion and burial of Jesus, his tomb was found open and empty. That evening Jesus appeared to his disciples, appearing to them in a locked room and bestowing the Holy Spirit upon them. Which disciple missed out on this event, and did not believe, saying, "Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe." (John 20:25)?

Answer: Thomas

The story of Doubting Thomas is found in John 20:24-29.

Despite everything that Jesus had told his disciples regarding his death and resurrection, they were still stunned when Jesus was crucified, thinking that it had all been for nothing. Even when his fellow disciples told him of Jesus' appearance, Thomas refused to believe.

Eight days later, Jesus visited the disciples again, and this time Thomas was there. Jesus said to him (v. 27), "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe."

Thomas answered simply (v. 28), "My Lord and my God!", his faith restored.
