When he was accepted, he had many problems to overcome. He believed that he didn't need anyone's help, but he soon learned differently.

Jake Huard was actually on the waiting list, but he was informed that a few people had opted out, so there was now room for him to attend the Naval Academy. After a boxing match between Jake and Cole, Jake punched Cole and lost his privileges for the boxing workouts. Instead, he was to jump rope on the other side of the gym. He was so set on competing in the big boxing tournament, that he asked Ali and Burton to help him with his boxing training. He worked hard and ended up getting second place in the boxing tournament.

During a holiday break while Jake was back at home, he asked his dad for his job back working on the ship with the rest of the crew. At the end of the year, a big boxing tournament was held between the Academy's best boxers. Actually, Huard couldn't train with the other boxers because he "attacked" Cole after they boxed and punched him. Instead of training for the boxing tournament, he was to jump rope.

He had Ali and Burton helping him train during the night. He worked hard, and faced Cole in the finals. While Huard had a tough start, he began to come back towards the end of the fight, however Cole finally won.

In order to be able to attend Annapolis for their second year, the students had to get 5 minutes or less on the obstacle course. At the beginning of the year Twins was the only one who couldn't even finish the obstacle coarse, but Huard helped him improve on the course throughout the year.

When Twins ran the course at the end of the year he finished it and everyone was sure that he had made it. Then Cole told him that he had finished in 5 minutes and 4 seconds - 4 seconds over. After that, he felt as if he had let everyone down, and actually tried to kill himself by jumping from his bedroom window. Twins did survive, but was out of Annapolis Naval Academy.

Huard and Cole had a boxing match and Cole beat Huard pretty badly. Then they were rivals. Huard was in the weight class just below Coles, so Huard started eating tons of food. Twins gave him his secret stashes of sugar, and Huard put extra butter on his bread at meals. Jake ended up getting into Cole's weight class, and facing him in the finals, but Cole won.

Jake was hanging out with some of his friends at a bar after they were done working on the ship for the day. His friends told him that they bought him a "going away present." Jake walked up to Ali, who was sitting at the bar, and started to tell her to keep the money. Ali was confused and told Jake that she had no idea what he was talking about.

They laughed about it, and then they went their separate ways. The next time they saw each other was at Annapolis, and Ali was one of the officials.

After Jake Huard knocked Loo out of the tournament, he decided to help Jake in order to help him defeat Cole. He assisted Ali and Burton in rehydrating Jake and attending to his cuts and bruises during the matches. They also cheered him on and gave him pointers throughout the fight.
