Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1968 historical drama, about Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, was one of Anthony Hopkins' first screen appearances?

Answer: The Lion in Winter

Sharing the screen with Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn might have been intimidating for a newcomer, but Anthony Hopkins held his own playing the role of their son, Richard the Lionheart. The film, which took place in 1183, was a fictional account of a family Christmas gathering, during which Henry and Eleanor battled over which of their children would succeed their father as King. "The Lion in Winter", which also introduced us to former James Bond, Timothy Dalton, was a best picture nominee and won Katharine Hepburn her fourth Oscar. Anthony Hopkins received a BAFTA nomination for best supporting actor but lost out to Ian Holm for "The Bofors Gun".
2. Anthony Hopkins must have made an impression playing former British Prime Minister David Lloyd George; he was cast in the role three times. In which 1972 film did he first portray George?

Answer: Young Winston

"Young Winston" was an account of the early years of Winston Churchill (with Churchill played by Simon Ward) based on Churchill's memoirs. The film covered Churchill's childhood, his cavalry days, and his election to Parliament at age 26. David Lloyd George was Prime Minister from 1916 to 1922, just as Churchill was beginning his political career. Hopkins also portrayed George on TV in "The Edwardians" and "Lloyd George", both from 1973.
3. In which 1969 film did Anthony Hopkins play Claudius, the stepfather of the title character, played by Nicol Williamson, despite only being a year older than Williamson?

Answer: Hamlet

Nicol Williamson was 31 when he played the title role as Hamlet; Hopkins was 32 when he portrayed Claudius, Hamlet's uncle who murdered Hamlet's father and married his mother. The Tony Richardson production also included Marianne Faithfull as Ophelia, Hamlet's love interest.

Interestingly, Hopkins also portrayed Shakespeare's Othello in a 1981 BBC production; the role was originally supposed to go to James Earl Jones, but the English actors' guild protested, and Hopkins ended up in make-up playing the Moor Othello.
4. In which 1984 film, based on a true story, did Anthony Hopkins get tossed off a ship by Mel Gibson?

Answer: The Bounty

"The Bounty" told the story of a mutiny that took place in the South Pacific in 1789, when the crew of an English ship mutinied against the authoritative rule of the commanding officer and his supporters. As Fletcher Christian, Mel Gibson led the mutiny against Anthony Hopkins' Lieutenant William Bligh (Bligh was later promoted to captain but was still a lieutenant at the time of the mutiny).

The distinguished cast also included Daniel Day-Lewis, Liam Neeson and Sir Laurence Olivier. Hopkins' Bligh was portrayed with more sympathy than in earlier versions of the film, and although the film was faulted for historical inaccuracies, Hopkins' performance received positive reviews.
5. A lesser-known film of Anthony Hopkins had him portraying a bookseller, in post-WWII England, who developed a long-term correspondence with a literature-loving New Yorker. Which 1987 movie, named for the address of the bookstore, was it?

Answer: 84 Charing Cross Road

In "84 Charing Cross Road", Anne Bancroft portrayed Helene Hanff who originally contacted Marks & Company bookstore manager Frank Doel (Hopkins) in search of obscure books. They corresponded over many years, with Doel sending Hanff books that he thought she might enjoy, and Hanff sending him post-World War II "care" packages for his employees.

They never met; Hanff finally went to England in the 1970s, a couple of years after Doel had died, and visited the book store which was then vacant. Bancroft won the Best Actress BAFTA for her performance.
6. In which 1992 horror film, starring Gary Oldman in the title role, did Anthony Hopkins portray Professor Van Helsing?

Answer: Dracula

Also known as "Bram Stoker's Dracula", the Francis Ford Coppola film mainly followed Stoker's novel but added a bit of artistic license regarding Dracula's motivation; he was pursuing Mina, who he believed was the reincarnation of his late wife. Hopkins portrayed vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing who was called in to investigate the illness of Lucy, Mina's friend, who had been bitten by Dracula.

He later killed Lucy after she turned into a vampire, and he then went after Dracula. Besides Hopkins and Oldman, the cast included Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and singer Tom Waits, as Dracula's stooge, the lunatic Renfield.
7. For which 1993 movie did Anthony Hopkins receive an Oscar nomination for playing a butler whose devotion to his work caused him to miss out on life?

Answer: The Remains of the Day

"The Remains of the Day" was Hopkins' second film with Emma Thompson, coming right on the heels of 1992's "Howards End", for which Thompson won the Best Actress Oscar. Both Hopkins and Thompson were nominated for "The Remains of the Day", although neither won.

The film, which spanned several decades, began with Hopkins and Thompson working in the pre-WW II household of a man with sympathy towards Nazi Germany. Despite a closeness which developed between the two, Hopkins' Mr. Stevens remained aloof, and Thompson's Miss Kenton left for a married life with another man. Stevens realized too late that he missed his chance at a life with Kenton.

Besides Hopkins and Thompson, the Merchant Ivory film also featured Hugh Grant, Christopher Reeve and James Fox.
8. In which 1993 film, whose title referred to the last chapter of "The Chronicles of Narnia" series, did Anthony Hopkins portray author C.S. Lewis?

Answer: Shadowlands

"Shadowlands" was based on the true story of the life led by life-long bachelor C.S. Lewis, after he entered a marriage of convenience with American poet Joy Gresham so that she could remain in England. Over the years, the platonic relationship grew into love, which was apparent when Gresham was dying from cancer. Hopkins won a BAFTA for best actor for his performance, and Debra Winger, who played Gresham, received Academy Award and BAFTA nominations.

The title "Shadowlands" came from the last chapter of the last book in "The Chronicles of Narnia" series: "Farewell to Shadowlands" in "The Last Battle".
9. Anthony Hopkins received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of U.S. President Richard Nixon in 1995. For which 1997 film did he receive a nomination for portraying U.S. President John Quincy Adams?

Answer: Amistad

The Steven Spielberg film was based on the true story of a mutiny aboard a slave ship in 1839 and the Supreme Court case that followed. The elderly John Quincy Adams argued the case in favor of the kidnapped Africans before the Supreme Court and won their freedom.

Other members of the cast included Morgan Freeman, Matthew McConaughey and Pete Postlethwaite. Hopkins was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance but lost to Robin Williams for "Good Will Hunting".
10. Although this 1998 remake of "Death Takes a Holiday" was widely panned, Anthony Hopkins' performance was memorable. In which film did Hopkins meet death -- literally?

Answer: Meet Joe Black

The fantasy film was the story of Death (portrayed by Brad Pitt) coming to claim Anthony Hopkins' billionaire Bill Parrish. Death decided to hang around and experience life for a change, while he gave Parrish a bit more time to settle his things. The film was criticized for being overly long; Hopkins' performance was wonderful however, and his final speech at his 65th birthday party, just before Death took him, was touching:

"What a glorious night. Every face I see is a memory. It may not be a perfectly perfect memory. Sometimes we had our ups and downs. But we're all together and you're mine for a night. And I'm going to break precedent and tell you my one-candle wish...that you would have a life as lucky as mine, where you can wake up one morning and say, 'I don't want anything more'. Sixty-five years. Don't they go by in a blink?"
