Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the film, the elderly Salieri attempts suicide. How does he do this?

Answer: He slits his throat.

Salieri is riddled with guilt because he believes he caused Mozart's death. He cries, "Mozart! Mozart! Forgive your assassin!" Afterwards, Salieri can be seen with bandages on his neck.
2. What did a young Salieri offer as a symbol of his devotion to God if He would grant the boy a great musical gift?

Answer: His chastity

Salieri was intensely jealous of Mozart for having had an affair with Katerina Cavalieri, with whom Salieri was secretly in love. This is a bit of dramatic license taken by the film. The real Antonio Salieri was married and had eight children.
3. When we first see the adult Mozart, who is he working for?

Answer: Archbishop Colloredo

Mozart can be seen performing for the Archbishop near the beginning of the film. The Archbishop is displeased with Mozart's lack of discipline, but luckily for Mozart, Emperor Joseph hears of his talent and sends for him not long thereafter.
4. When the Emperor and his advisors are first discussing Mozart, the Emperor recalls a childhood memory in which his sister was proposed to by a six year-old Mozart. Who was Emperor Joseph's sister?

Answer: Marie Antoinette of France

Emperor Joseph mentions "my sister Antoinette" a few times during the film, the first being when he is first talking with his advisors about Mozart and he recalls the memory. Legend has it that this proposal actually took place. Marie Antoinette's father, Emperor Francis, was reportedly quite amused.
5. What reason does Stanzi give for initially refusing to marry Mozart?

Answer: He's a fiend.

Mozart asks Stanzi to marry him while playing the "backwards game". Once she translates his request, she coyly says, "No! I'm not going to marry you. You're a fiend!" She soon changes her tune, however, after Mozart performs his first successful opera for Emperor Joseph.
6. What is Constanze's maiden name?

Answer: Weber

Stanzi's mother drags her over to meet the Emperor after Mozart's debut performance in Vienna. Mozart introduces Frau Weber to the Emperor as his landlady.
7. A maid is sent to Mozart's home to perform housekeeping duties at the bequest of an anonymous donor. Who sent her?

Answer: Salieri

Lorl will only tell Mozart that she was sent by an anonymous admirer, but she can later be seen telling Salieri all about Mozart's daily activities, for which Salieri compensates her handsomely. Lorl was played by Cynthia Nixon, who is best known for her role as Miranda Hobbes on "Sex and the City".
8. When Mozart attempts to persuade the Emperor to allow him to produce "The Marriage of Figaro", he says it is full of good German virtues. When the Emperor asks Mozart to name a good German virtue, what is Mozart's response?

Answer: "Love."

Salieri balks at the suggestion that love is solely a German virtue, remarking sarcastically, "Oh yes, we Italians know nothing about love." To which Mozart responds, "No, I don't believe you do."
9. Who plays the welcome march for Mozart when he first arrives at the Emperor's palace in Vienna?

Answer: Emperor Joseph

In the film, Salieri had written the march, and Emperor Joseph asked to play it when Mozart came in. The march as Mozart "improves" it in the film is actually "Non Piu Andrai, Farfallone Amoroso" from "The Marriage of Figaro".
10. What is the name of Mozart's actor friend who commissions him to write "The Magic Flute"?

Answer: Schikaneder

Mozart introduces Stanzi to his good friend Schikaneder during a performance of one of Mozart's operas. Simon Callow, who plays Emanuel Schikaneder in the film, played the role of Mozart in the 1979 stage production of "Amadeus".
