"Battle Royale": Fight Right And With Gusto Quiz

This quiz is on the controversial Japanese movie "Battle Royale", which is in a genre of its own. Since this movie is not widely known, I'll be taking it easy with the heavy questions I hold so dear.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did Nanahara's father commit suicide?

Answer: He hanged himself

Nanahara came home from school one day, to find his father hanging with an extension cord around his neck. On the floor he found an unraveled roll of toilet paper with a message on it, basically telling Nanahara to get out of there. We never really found out what this message was all about.
2. Early in the movie, who injured Kitano with a knife at the school?

Answer: Nobu (Nanahara's best friend)

Nobu cut him in the back of the leg and ran off, and Noriko picked up and hid the knife before Kitano saw it. Nanahara and Mitsuko were not seen in this scene.
3. How many deaths had taken place - that the kids knew of - before the start of the game?

Answer: 3

First Kitano "disciplined" or murdered a girl who kept whispering during the instructional Battle Royale video. Then he killed Nobu. Perhaps this was as an example, because he started a commotion during the video, or maybe because he attacked Kitano earlier. Kitano set off Nobu's explosive collar.

They also wheeled in the bullet-riddled corpse of one teacher who had voiced his opposition to Battle Royale.
4. Every one of the students was given an actual weapon.

Answer: False

Some of them were given valuable defensive items such as a bullet-proof vest, or in Shuya's case, a much less valuable pot lid for a shield. Others were given helpful tools like binoculars and a GPS tracking device. Some were given utterly useless items for this game, such as a megaphone. One poor boy was given a fork.

Another was given a paper fan, although he later got his hands on an Uzi, and became the deadliest one on the island. They were all pitted against students who had been given blades, pistols, shotguns and automatic rifles. Hooray for fair play.
5. Which of the girls had the highest death toll?

Answer: Mitsuko (the pretty one with a reputation as a tramp)

Mitsuko had been given a combat sickle, and after killing Megumi with it, added a stun gun to her arsenal. Eventually she killed Hirono and took her pistol, which became her weapon of choice. She killed four girls and two boys in all, before being taken down by Kiriyama, the deadliest of all the students on the island.
6. Which of the following is NOT one of the functions of the electronic collars the students were forced to wear?

Answer: alerting students of danger zones

The collars were the way the game masters tracked the students on the island via GPS. They also monitored their pulse, letting them know which ones were dead or alive. They were also equipped with a low explosive device (I don't care how low an explosive it is, it's wrapped around your throat!) set to go off if they caused trouble, lingered around danger zones, or tried to remove the collars.

It was later revealed by Mimura, that they were bugged for sound, and transmitted the students' conversations back to Kitano's base.

Information on danger zones was called out by Kitano himself over the island's loud speakers.
7. Which of these was not one of the ingredients Mimura needed for his homemade explosives?

Answer: moth balls

Mimura and his band of rebels found a way to sabotage the game. Mimura first gained access to the island's computer network, by reactivating an abandoned terminal. He then had his cohorts find the materials he needed to make some explosives - fertilizer, sulfur, pesticide, kerosene and charcoal.

Then he hacked into the system and planted a virus, forcing Kitano to restart the system. The plan was to use their newly-fashioned explosives to blow up the school building in the 15 minutes it took to reboot the system, and put an end to the game.

Unfortunately, trigger-happy Kiriyama came along and began shooting everyone up. Mimura was forced to detonate the bomb right then and there to stop him, putting an end to that plan.
8. Which one of these boys had been in a Battle Royale before?

Answer: Kawada (the quiet one with the headband)

We come to find out Kawada had participated in a previous Battle Royale, in which he lost his sweetheart Keiko. In fact, she shot him, then he shot her. Due to the sometimes fragmented narration in the movie, it was not completely confirmed that he won the first BR he was in. One would have to assume so, given the rules. We could also assume that Kiriyama was not new to BR, given his rather calm reaction to the announcement of the rules at the beginning.
9. Yuka Nakagawa died after eating poisoned noodles, but she was not the intended victim. Who was the poison really for?

Answer: Nanahara

Yuko had been armed with a vial of poison powder, which she put into a dish of noodles intended for Nanahara, who was being nursed to health by the girls in the lighthouse. She wanted to kill him because she had seem him get into a struggle earlier with another boy, Oki.

This involved a hatchet and lots of rolling around, and resulted in the former accidentally getting killed. She was convinced Nanahara had done it on purpose and wanted revenge. Unfortunately, as she was about to bring him the dish, Yuka came in, took it from her and ate it, thinking it was hers. Less than two minutes later she was dead.

This set off a paranoia-induced shootout that left all the girls in the lighthouse dead, except Yuko, who promptly jumped off the lighthouse from sheer guilt anyway.
10. Which girl was played by Chiaki Kuriyama, the same actress who had a role in "Kill Bill Vol.1"?

Answer: Chigusa

Chigusa was played by Chiaki Kuriyama, who played O-Ren, Ishii's teenage bodyguard Gogo Yubari in "Kill Bill". Do you remember the schoolgirl with the ball and chain? Interesting note: in both movies, her character inflicted a particularly painful death on boys who expressed an interest in sleeping with her.
