Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scenes of Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast', a prince, who later became the Beast, demonstrated a lack of hospitality. Which of the following flowers, which played an important part in the film, represented his cold nature?

Answer: Rose

The rose became a powerful symbol of magic, love and the Beast's nature throughout 'Beauty and the Beast'. A spell was initially cast over a prince and his castle when he refused to give shelter to an unfortunate looking woman. For his mean-spirited ways, the handsome prince was transformed into a ghastly beast and his servants changed into various household objects.

The significance of the rose was that when the last petal was to drop, the prince and his servants would forever remain in their new forms, unless he learned to love someone who would also come to love him in return. Would the Beast find love in time or was he destined to remain a shadow of his former self until his dying days?
2. A village beauty named Belle appeared bored with rurality and she longed for something more exciting from life. Which of the following does the viewer discover Belle has a passion for?

Answer: Books

In a lovely musical number seen in the opening scenes of 'Beauty and the Beast', the viewer is made aware of Belle's love of books. It was perhaps her discontent with small town life that led to her seeking excitement and adventure in the form of literature. It appeared as though very few people in the settlement understood Belle, one of them being her father and another being the owner of the local bookshop. Here are a few lyrics from 'Belle' that set the adventurous tone for the rest of the film:

Belle: "The bookshop. I just finished the most wonderful story
About a beanstalk and an ogre and a -"

Townsfolk: "Look there she goes that girl is strange, no question
Dazed and distracted, can't you tell?"

Belle: "There must be more than this provincial life!"

Townsfolk: "Look there she goes that girl is so peculiar
I wonder if she's feeling well
With a dreamy, far-off look
And her nose stuck in a book
What a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle".
3. For a reasonable portion of the running time of 'Beauty and the Beast', Belle lived with her quirky father, Maurice. What was Maurice's hobby and method of earning a living?

Answer: Invention

Maurice's inventive ability was the vehicle that moved the 'Beauty and the Beast' story along from beginning to end. One example of this was seen early on when Maurice finally got his woodcutting machine to work and he travelled out of the local community to share his invention with the world. Things didn't go to plan and this invited adventure into Belle's life - adventure that she had desired for so long. Maurice's invention ultimately led Belle to the Beast!
4. Belle was considered a very beautiful woman by her fellow townsfolk and she received a lot of unwanted attention from a man named Gaston. Which of these best describes Gaston?

Answer: Muscular

On the surface, Gaston was a ruggedly handsome man but his personality was not particularly attractive. He was a rather narrow-minded individual, even going as far as saying that Belle should stop reading as it made her look odd to her fellow townspeople.

The idiocy of Gaston wasn't going to make Belle turn her back on books but it did highlight the fact that she was "different". It is this sense of difference that may have been behind Belle's empathy for the Beast in later parts of the film.
5. Whilst on the way to a fair, Belle's father, Maurice, lost his bearings and got trapped in the woods. He eventually found his way to the Beast's residence and met some curious characters. Some of these characters are listed below but which one of them is not correctly described?

Answer: Chip - Footstool

Maurice had managed to get his woodcutting machine to work and so he began his travels to a fair where he could advertise and perhaps sell his invention. He got lost along the way, in the woods no less, and undertook a tiring attempt to find his way out.

As the night closed in he stumbled upon the Beast's castle and he was warmly welcomed by some magical characters: Lumière (a candelabra), Cogsworth (a clock), Mrs. Potts (a charming and homely teapot) and her son, Chip (a teacup, not a footstool). Chip, named after the chip on his rim, becomes important later on in 'Beauty and the Beast'; without him, Belle and the Beast may never have been able to satisfy the conditions of the terrible curse set upon the castle.
6. Whilst Lumière, Mrs. Potts and friends made Maurice feel welcome at the castle, the miserable Beast saw him as an intrusion. Consequently, Maurice was imprisoned by the Beast and Belle had to attempt to rescue him. The only way that Maurice was able to be freed was by Belle taking his place! After a while, the Beast tried to make Belle feel more comfortable but refused her access to which part of the castle?

Answer: The west wing

The west wing was home to the enchanted rose that seemingly ruled over the life of the Beast; every petal that fell from the rose brought him closer to a lifetime of a bestial appearance. In addition to the rose was a magic mirror which allowed the person looking into it to see anything that they wished.

The Beast clearly didn't want Belle to see these objects that contributed to his great emotional pain.
7. Despite the Beast becoming more and more hospitable, he was rendered enraged when he discovered that Belle had wandered into a part of the castle he had previously told her was out of bounds. In fright, Belle tried to escape from the castle but she soon ran into trouble in the form of what?

Answer: A pack of wolves

Belle was so frightened by the Beast that she tried to escape from the castle but she only made it as far as the woods. It was there that she and her horse, who had been tied up outside the castle, ran into a pack of wolves who appeared to be rather hostile! The Beast came running after Belle and it was only he who stood between her and the vicious pack.

After the Beast had risked his own well-being in order to protect her, Belle started to develop feelings for him; could it be that such an unlikely pair were about to fall in love?
8. As the Beast started falling in love with Belle, he began to share more and more with her; he allowed her to use his magic mirror, an object which revealed that Maurice was in trouble. The Beast granted Belle freedom so that she could help her beloved father but shortly after she had returned her father to his home, he was taken to the asylum. Gaston offered to get Maurice released from the asylum but what did he want in return?

Answer: Belle to marry him

Gaston was a man used to getting exactly what he wanted; the men of the town wanted to be him and the women of the village wanted to be with him, well, all except one - Belle! She wasn't interested in the conceited individual, a man who wanted to marry her but arguably didn't really love her. Whether someone is attractive or not goes beyond the surface of the skin; Belle expressing more of a romantic interest in the Beast than in Gaston is a lovely example of that! Belle refused to marry Gaston and as a consequence she found herself in quite a tricky situation.
9. Gaston and the other townsfolk eventually gained knowledge of the Beast's existence and they decided to confront him. Before the town's residents went on the rampage, they locked Belle and Maurice in the basement of their modest home. Who was responsible for freeing them?

Answer: Chip

In order to stop her father from being taken to the asylum, Belle used the magic mirror she had been gifted by the Beast. She showed all the townsfolk that the Beast did exist and the stories her father had been telling them were based in reality and not in his eccentric mind. Showing them the mirror achieved her aim of preventing her father from being taken away but in turn it placed the Beast in danger - the people of the town wanted him gone.

In order to achieve that outcome, Belle and Maurice were locked in their own cellar. With the cause seemingly lost, out comes Chip the teacup who, unbeknownst to Belle, had travelled back to the village with her. Chip ingeniously uses Maurice's woodcutting machine to free them and the three of them headed for the castle to prevent Gaston and company from attacking the Beast.
10. Did Belle and the Beast declare their love for each other in time, such that the Beast and his servants returned to human form?

Answer: Yes

True to the fairy tale tradition, 'Beauty and the Beast' adhered to the "happily ever after" ending; Belle declared her love for the Beast as the last remaining petal of the enchanted rose detached and fell. With the Beast already having expressed his love for Belle earlier in the film, the conditions to break the spell had been met and so the Beast returned to his former princely self and his servants transformed back to human form.
