Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the movie it is revealed that Dracula originally had a wife named Elisabeta. Her death is what sets in motion his transformation from Vlad the Impaler to the undead Dracula. What manner of death does she suffer?

Answer: suicide

She commits suicide after receiving a false note from Vlad's enemies telling of his death in battle. Upon his return he is informed by priests that her soul is damned as a suicide, which leads to his renouncement of Christ. It also signals the beginning of his transformation into Dracula, after drinking of a blood that mysteriously flows from a stone cross.
2. What Academy Award nominated actress plays the duo roles of Mina Harker and Elisabeta, the original bride of Dracula?

Answer: Winona Ryder

Winona appears as Elisabeta only briefly but Mina is the driving force behind the plot. After Dracula spies a photo of Mina he is immediately enraptured, as he sees her as a reincarnation of his beloved. His detention of Johnathan gives him time to sow the seeds of his seduction from afar.

He first uses her friend Lucy to gain entry into the land and then makes Mina's acquaintance, shortly after arriving upon the Demeter. Although she initially resists him, her reason and good judgment soon fail her, due to the charms of Dracula.

Although she rushes to marry Johnathan, once he announces his safety, her heart fully belongs to Dracula by that point. The other three actresses all starred in films based on other classic monsters. Julia Roberts starred as "Mary Reilly", Helena Bonham Carter was in "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" and Michelle Pfeiffer co-starred with Jack Nicholson in "Wolf".
3. When the character of Lucy is first introduced, she comes upon Mina and displays a ribald manner. Mina tries to pretend she is much more ladylike but a book falls from her lap and the illustrations give her away. What rather salacious book is it?

Answer: Arabian Nights

Right before the book falls from her lap she scolds Lucy and says "There is more to marriage than carnal pleasure". The two characters share a sort of intimate connection with each other, even having a rather passionate kiss during a storm later in the film.

The most famous translation of the book into English was by Sir Richard Burton. It's popularity is often attributed to the emphasis his version placed on sexuality.
4. Which of these abilities, that set Dracula apart from most movie interpretations of vampires, does he not have in the film?

Answer: Cast a reflection

He still lacks the ability to cast a reflection like most vampires do. This is usually attributed to the fact that they have no souls upon which to reflect. This causes him to shatter a mirror while Jonathan Harker is staying with him in order to preserve his secret, although why a vampire has mirrors at all in his house is a mystery. Dracula is able to move about in the day time and Abraham Van Helsing even says that it is a popular misconception that they are purely nocturnal.

He also mentions that they do have reduced powers during the day. Dracula's shadow is shown to have free will and it moves separately from Dracula on a number of occasions.

He appears as the ape creature when he comes to claim Lucy and attacks Quincy Morris while in that shape.
5. Lucy Westenra has a very flirtatious nature, as exhibited by her many suitors in the movie. Which main character is not after her hand in marriage, but still cares for her safety?

Answer: Dr. Abraham Van Helsing

All three men, despite being rivals for the love of Lucy, are good friends. Quincey Morris is a wealthy Texan who fits the stereotype of a man from the Old West. Arthur Holmwood is the one of the trio who is chosen by Lucy as her husband and they are engaged. John Seward is a doctor and the man in charge of the local asylum.

He is also the former pupil of Dr. Abraham Van Helsing. He calls him in as he is stymied in finding an explanation for Lucy's illness. Van Helsing has knowledge of the vampiric creature and how to combat them.

He has all three of the suitors donate blood to help Lucy but ultimately to no avail. He is the one who delivers the final blow to finish off Lucy.
6. While Renfield is imprisoned in the asylum, he is visited by Mina and Dr. Seward in order to gain information. Later Dracula enters into his cell in the form of green mist and kills him as a punishment. What form did Renfield's death take?

Answer: slammed into cell bars

R.M. Renfield was played in the film by Tom Waits. He was the original liaison to Dracula, but was rendered insane and replaced by Johnathan Harker. Upon his return to London he was placed in the Carfax asylum, which is overseen by Dr Seward. The guards at the asylum all wear a manner of cage around their heads as a form of protection.
7. When Van Helsing and Mina separate from the others she begins to come under the influence of Dracula and his brides. She tries to seduce him and starts to change into a full vampire, until Van Helsing uses what to shock her back to her senses?

Answer: holy wafer

After shocking Mina back to normal he wards off the brides by creating a ring of fire. In retribution the brides kill the horses Mina and Van Helsing have been riding on. The next day as the brides slept, Van Helsing comes and cut their heads off.
8. Which famous Italian actress has one of her earliest film roles playing one of Dracula's brides in the film?

Answer: Monica Bellucci

This was Monica's first role in an English language film. She is famous for roles in "The Passion of the Christ" and the "Matrix" series. Asia Argento is the daughter of noted Italian horror director Dario Argento and appeared in many of his films. Jennifer Esposito, although not appearing in this film, did appear in the Wes Craven pseudo-sequel "Dracula 2000".
9. In the final battle Dracula's servants are destroyed and Dracula himself is dealt a mortal wound. Ultimately, who delivers the final blow that destroys Dracula?

Answer: Mina Harker

This climax comes when the party that has pursued Dracula since London, catches him just inside the walls of his own castle. Once there Dracula hopes to regain his strength and begin again. The gypsies that serve Dracula are killed by the heroes but at the cost of a mortal wound to Quincy Morris.

After Mina delivers the final blow, Dracula appears to revert to his former human self and ascended up to heaven in a blinding light. Even the fresco in the castle changes to reflect his true self returning at this his final moment.
10. Although the film contained a star studded cast, including Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, and Keanu Reeves, the film received no Oscar acting nominations. It did much better in the behind the scenes categories though. Which of the following categories did the film NOT win for?

Answer: Best Director

It was also nominated in the category of Art Direction/Set Decoration but lost to "Howards End". Francis Ford Coppola won his directing award for "The Godfather II" and has been nominated multiple times. The winners of the awards were: Best Costume Design-Eiko Ishioka, Best Sound Effects Editing-Tom C. McCarthy and David E. Stone and Best Makeup-Greg Cannom, Michèle Burke and Matthew W. Mungle.
