Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Just as Holly arrives home from breakfast at Tiffany's, one of her..."clients", dozing in his car while waiting for Holly to return, notices her and runs up to the door behind her. Holly tries to politely refuse him, and manages to sneak inside her apartment. The man then bangs on the door, saying, "You like me! I'm a _____ guy!" What kind of guy does he say he is?

Answer: liked

Apparently he didn't feel he'd gotten his fifty dollars' worth.
2. What is the name of the gentleman caller waiting in the car for Holly at the beginning of the movie?

Answer: Sid Arbuck

Sid was the "stalker" at the beginning of the film, played by Claude Stroud. Rusty Trawler was the "ninth richest man in America under 50" that Holly was after later in the film; Blake Edwards directed the movie. Tom Johnson is just an extra name for the sake of filling out the answer pool.
3. When Holly and Paul first meet in Holly's apartment, oblivious to the fact that Paul is a complete stranger, Holly asks him for help in getting ready to go off to Sing-Sing to visit Sally Tomato. What kind of shoes does she instruct Paul to look for while she's in the bathroom getting dressed?

Answer: black alligator

I find it amusing that she'd have a complete stranger rifling through her things, but then again, that's the charm of Holly (and of the apparently much safer New York City of the early '60s). My favorite moment is when Paul picks up something out of the basket of plastic fruit and flowers that turns out to be a lighter.
4. Where does Holly ultimately find the matching shoe?

Answer: in the basket of fruit/flowers

"There you are, you sneak!"
5. Just before she catches a taxi to Sing-Sing, we notice that Holly set up her mailbox for something other than mail. What did she keep in her mailbox?

Answer: perfume, lipstick, and a mirror

I always thought this was a very creative use of an apartment mailbox, at least if you don't get much mail.
6. Despite an incredible whistle, Holly doesn't actually have to hail a cab, because one comes up to deposit a friend of Paul's. He introduces the friend to Holly as "Mrs. ____".

Answer: Failenson

As for her first name, it's Louise. I had a hard time understanding her on the phone later when she refers to herself as what sounds like "Tooey". Turns out, according to the cast sheet, it's "2-E". I'm guessing that referenced is explained in the original novel by Truman Capote, but it's been awhile since I read it so I can't prove that!
7. As what relation does Paul introduce the friend getting out of the cab (the cab that Holly then takes to Sing-Sing)?

Answer: as his decorator

"Decorator" huh? I've heard it called lots of things before, but never "decorator".
8. A little bit later, we see Paul's friend from the cab leave some money for...services provided. How much money did she leave?

Answer: $300

Holly only got $50 a pop. I guess it's good to be a man!
9. Fill in the missing words: "It's useful being ___ ____ in the shock department."

Answer: top banana

It was hard for me to believe Audrey Hepburn as "shocking", both because of her innocent appearance and the fact that what shocked in 1961 wasn't very shocking when I first saw the film in the early '90s. Audrey's Holly seemed to me more like a girl who thought she knew a lot more than she really did.
10. What year was Paul's collection of short stories, "Nine Lives", published?

Answer: 1956

This stuck out to me because she coyly makes the point that Paul hasn't done anything--writingwise--in quite awhile. "Lately, since 1956?" The movie was released in 1961, so it was probably set in 1960, a long span for a writer to go without writing.
11. Upon arriving at Holly's party with a personally autographed copy of "Nine Lives" as a present for her, the first person Paul meets is Holly's agent, O.J. Berman (probably the only other notable "O.J." in Hollywood history). What future player on "Archie Bunker's Place" played O.J. Berman?

Answer: Martin Balsam

Martin Balsam played a perfectly nutty O.J. Berman, as well as a few dozen other character parts in both TV and movies.
12. When we see Holly's agent later in the film, he's talking to Paul from a speaker phone in his bedroom. He whines, "Oh, why don't you behave?" To whom or to what is he speaking?

Answer: the electric bed

Apparently, they had Craftmatic Adjustable Beds back then too. I was more shocked to see a speaker phone, though.
13. Who was the model at the party that Holly referred to as "a thumping bore"?

Answer: Mag Wildwood

If that woman was a model, RuPaul could've been Miss America.
14. Finish the quote about what the "thumping bore" model threatened to do to Rusty Trawler, one of her two dates to the party, for cavorting with Holly: "I'm going to march you over to the zoo and feed you to the ___!"

Answer: yak

Obviously a drunken utterance. Who feeds someone to a YAK? Wouldn't a lion or a bear have been a more meaningful threat? Good thing she passed out before she had the chance to try.
15. When Holly realizes that the model is about to pass out and fall over, she hollers this warning:

Answer: "Timber!"

Considering the resemblance I thought Dorothy Whitney bore to a tree trunk, I found this was a most apt choice of phrase.
16. Paul is finally able to get writing again, both because Holly replaced the ribbon for his typewriter, and because she inspired his next short story. How much did Paul get paid for the story?

Answer: $50

Fifty dollars is a frequently recurring theme in this movie. Of course, it makes perfect sense later because then Paul has exactly the requisite $50 to offer Holly as an insult when she rejects him at the library.
17. In one of the most memorable scenes, Paul sees Holly sitting on her windowsill singing the movie's theme song, "Moon River". True or False: Audrey Hepburn did her own singing in this movie.

Answer: True

Although it was widely assumed otherwise due to the dubbing of another actress' voice for Audrey's songs in "My Fair Lady", Audrey did indeed do her own singing for "Breakfast at Tiffany's". The song was pre-recorded however, a common practice in movie making, so that she could lip-sync during filming.

She also learned the right "Moon River" chords on the guitar so that her strumming would be realistic. (www.reelclassics.com)
18. Why didn't Holly marry Rusty Trawler?

Answer: he married someone else

The reason she didn't marry him was that he married someone else. We learn this when Paul picks up the newspaper and sees Rusty's wedding photo plastered on the front page. Holly decides she's actually quite relieved since it turns out rich ol' Rusty really OWES $600,000.
19. Holly wouldn't let Paul spend his whole $50 on her, but she agrees to let him buy a gift for under $10. When they explain the situation to the Tiffany's salesman, what item does he pull out of the display case to show them?

Answer: a sterling silver telephone dialer

"For the lady or gentleman who has everything." This is the one thing that probably most dates the film. In those days, there were only rotary phones, and novelty items like this helped preserve the fingernails of the more delicate telephone users.
20. Tangential bonus question: The Tiffany salesman was played by the sedately distinguished John McGiver. What other film starring Audrey Hepburn did John McGiver appear in?

Answer: Love in the Afternoon

He's actually got quite an impressive filmography, but my first and probably most memorable sighting of him was in 1975's "The Apple Dumpling Gang" with Don Knotts and Tim Conway. Thanks for playing!
