quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Paul first arrives at Holly's door at the beginning of the movie, he explains his key confusion as being the result of his just having gotten off of a plane. From where did Paul just fly in?

Answer: Rome

This is where he met "Mrs. Failenson, my, uh, decorator", as we see a few minutes later when, as Mrs. F. alights from her cab, she comments on how she left him three weeks ago in Rome.
2. After Holly first lets Paul into her apartment, the cat startles him by jumping up on his shoulder on the way to a shelf above him. Holly goes to the refrigerator to get some milk for the cat, and pulls out what unusual item for someone to find in a refrigerator?

Answer: a pair of ballet slippers

She pulls out a pair of ballet shoes. More odd is the fact that, after looking them over quizzically, she simply shrugs her shoulders and puts them right back in the fridge!
3. How long does Holly say she's lived in her apartment?

Answer: about a year

Paul looks around at the sparse and eclectic collection of furnishings and says, "So I guessed you just moved in too, huh?" Holly, apparently not understanding why anyone would find a cut-out footed bathtub being used as a couch as odd, replied sincerely "No, I've been here about a year."
4. What day is it when the movie opens?

Answer: Thursday

We find this out when Paul is about to make his phone call. He's talking about how he hopes the reason his "decorator" hasn't arrived yet isn't that he's gotten the day wrong. "This is...Thursday morning?" Holly replies, "Thursday?! Oh it simply can't be!"
5. When Holly realizes what day it is, she replies, "Oh no, it can't be! It's too ____!" What adjective does she use to describe "it"?

Answer: gruesome

I always thought "gruesome" was a bizarre choice of words, but then again, Holly wasn't your average girl-next-door.
6. How long does Holly tell Paul she's been going to Sing-Sing to visit Sally Tomato?

Answer: about 7 months

She says she's been going to see Sally for 7 months; as you now know from question three, "about a year" was how long she'd lived in her apartment.
7. When Holly is first explaining her visits with Sally Tomato to Paul, she says that she gets paid to go spend time with Mr. Tomato, and that to prove she's really been there, she must deliver a "weather report" to Sally's lawyer, who then gives her the money. What does she say the last weather report was?"

Answer: oh there's a hurricane in Cuba

When retelling this to Paul, the report is "small craft warnings, Block Island, Hatteras". It isn't until Paul goes with her to see Sally later in the movie that they get the "snow flurries expected this weekend in New Orleans" report. Gee, I bet the real meaning of those weather reports was hard for the police to figure out, huh? NOT!
8. When Holly climbs up to Paul's bedroom for the first time and sees the money that Mrs. Failenson has left him, he tells Holly that he's actually "a writer, I guess." Holly says she's only known one other writer, a man she repeatedly refers to as a "rat, or a super-rat, rather." What was his name?

Answer: Benny Shacklit

Benny was one of Holly's, uh, paying dates, hence her including him in the "rat/super-rat" population.
9. When Holly and Paul are talking in Paul's bedroom, Holly tells Paul about her brother Fred, of whom Paul reminds her. After she tells Paul about Fred, she says that she hopes to save up enough money so that one day, she can take care of Fred. Where does she want to take Fred and do what together?

Answer: Mexico, to raise horses

Although she does ultimately aspire to go to South America and raise Brazilian brats, it's only after her dreams of going to Mexico with Fred to raise horses are shattered by Fred's untimely death in a jeep accident.
10. After telling Paul all about her brother Fred, after whom she nicknames Paul, Holly falls asleep on Paul's bed. She begins to talk in her sleep, dreaming about her brother. Paul gently shakes her awake, and asks her about the dream. Holly startles Paul with her reply: "If we're going to be friends, let's get one thing straight. I hate ___!" What does Holly hate?

Answer: snoops

Obviously dreaming about something personal, Holly reacts badly to Paul's innocent inquiry. Call him crazy for just trying to be concerned, after all, she did just climb uninvited into his bedroom and plunk herself down in his bed after what was only their second conversation ever!
11. What was Mrs. Failenson's husbands' first name?

Answer: Bill

We find this out when she calls Paul, who she pretends is really her friend Lucille, to let him know that "Bill came back a day early, the beast." She says his name again when she comes into Paul's apartment, freaked out that she thinks she's being followed, and says that she wonders if maybe Bill's having them watched.
12. When Mrs. Failenson calls Paul to cancel their date because her husband has come home early, what name does she call Paul to help fool her husband who's standing nearby?

Answer: Lucille

If you missed this one because you thought "Louise" sounded familiar, that's because it's Mrs. Failenson's own first name.
13. When Holly throws the party in her apartment, Holly's agent, O.J. Berman, hooks up with a tall blonde. What did she say her name was?

Answer: Irving

I could never quite tell if she was serious or just putting him on, but I can honestly say I've never heard of another woman named "Irving," before or since.
14. At the party, O.J. offers to get Paul a drink. What type of liquor does Paul say he'll have?

Answer: bourbon

I always thought this scene might have included a bit of an ad-libbed-over blooper. Paul replies "bourbon", and then O.J. asks if he wants it with rocks. Paul says, looking distracted, "Yeah. No! Water." O.J.'s response is, "Okay, but rocks first, right?", and Paul, slightly confused, snaps back to the conversation and agrees. Something about the way the lines were delivered made me wonder if George Peppard didn't goof a bit and Martin Balsam was trying to get him back on track.

They proceeded neatly from there, however, so maybe it really was scripted that way. I just thought it seemed a little less polished than the rest of the film's dialogue, so it stood out to me.
15. Here's where you really had to be paying attention: after Paul, who was the first named guest to arrive at Holly's party? Here's a clue: O.J. is the one that opens the door, and a man and woman are standing there. O.J. calls out her name. What name is this?

Answer: Harriet

He says "Harriet" and she replies with "J.B." rather than "O.J.B." or "O.J.", so he sort of corrects her. This is another time I wondered if Martin Balsam was covering for someone else's goof!
16. How does O.J. Berman say they were able to smooth out Holly's original backwoods, Texas accent?

Answer: they gave her French lessons

I thought that was a great way to incorporate Audrey Hepburn's own Belgian/Dutch accent into the movie while explaining its presence in a New York City setting quite neatly.
17. Also at Holly's party, we see a man with an eye patch. What is his name?

Answer: Mike

Although he's not credited as such (he's just "Man with Eye Patch"), we learn his name when Holly is talking with him while holding her cigarette a little too close to the lady in the bluish-purple hat. Perhaps not coincidentally, his real name was Michael Quinn.
18. From what state does that thumping bore of a model, Mag Wildwood, hail?

Answer: Arkansas

She introduces herself to O.J. Berman, and says that she's from "Wildwood, Arkansas. That's hill country." And boy do they raise 'em tall and solid down there, if she's any indication!
19. When the delivery boy arrives at Holly's party with "reinforcements", what's the total amount of the bill?

Answer: we don't really know - he never finishes saying

I know the $47.80 answer was tempting, but in reality, we never find out the actual total. He gets most of the way through "forty-seven", but before we can find out the total, he's interrupted when Holly goes off to greet other guests. Paul just hands him a drink instead, and he shrugs and joins the festivities.
20. To wrap up Part 1: As Paul and Jose go to sneak out of Holly's party by way of the fire escape outside the bathroom window, they encounter O.J. and Irving smooching in the shower (fully clothed and dry). After Paul and Jose make it out the window, what does O.J. explain to Irving that they were, hence the reason for their crawling out the window?

Answer: jewel thieves

I thought this was a great line, delivered as though Paul and Jose were the weirdos for crawling out the window, rather than O.J., who's making out in the shower with a woman named Irving.
Thanks for playing!
