Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who won his first Oscar opposite Cagney and most memorably told the latter off at the end of the movie?

Answer: Jack Lemmon

Powell had his last film role in "Mister Roberts" as the kindly ship's doctor; ironically, Lemmon's frequent co-star, Walter Matthau, took Powell's role in the inferior sequel "Ensign Pulver". Fonda would have to wait until his last role in "On Golden Pond" to get his Oscar.

His death at film's end goaded Lemmon to toss Cagney's palm tree overboard and ask the latter "Now what's all this crud about no movies tonight?" Classic!
2. The 1955 Supporting Actor Oscar winner paired with quite a few famous actresses. Which one links him with fellow winner David Niven?

Answer: Shirley MacLaine

One of the early roles of Warren Beatty's sis was Princess Aouda in "Around The World In Eighty Days" opposite Niven's Phileas Fogg (Niven got the Oscar for "Separate Tables"). She later co-starred with Lemmon twice in Billy Wilder films: the Oscar-winning "The Apartment" and "Irma La Douce" (her Oscar was for "Terms Of Endearment").
3. Niven had his share of female co-stars. Which one of them won her Oscar opposite Marlon Brando?

Answer: Kim Hunter

Hunter was Niven's lady love in the enchanting Powell-Pressburger fantasy "A Matter Of Life and Death", one of my all-time favorites (see my Powell quiz). Then she was cast as Stella Kowalski and won the Oscar in Kazan's "A Streetcar Named Desire" opposite Brando (Vivien Leigh and Karl Malden got the other Oscars).
4. Brando got his first Oscar brawling with this often volatile character actor on the New Jersey waterfront. Who is he?

Answer: Lee J. Cobb

Lee J. Cobb was mob boss Johnny Friendly who slugged it out with Brando in "On The Waterfront", still controversial because it came after Kazan's naming names in the 50's anti-communist trials.
5. In 1957, an actress, married to a handsome actor, beat her hubby to an Oscar. She played a distaff Jekyll-Hyde, he was pool shark Eddie Felson. Who are they?

Answer: Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman

At a time when celebrity marriages can't cut it, the longevity of the Newmans is astonishing. Woodward's scenes with Cobb's kindly psychiatrist in "The Three Faces Of Eve" are luminous.
6. Felson challenged "Minnesota Fats" to a pool duel. "Fats" was played by a rotund TV comedian, best known as a blustering bus driver. Who's the supporting actor?

Answer: Jackie Gleason

Newman got the Oscar for Scorsese's sequel "The Color Of Money". Gleason, immortal for his Ralph Kramden, was Minnesota Fats, who beat Newman first time out, but lost to him in the rematch in the all-time classic "The Hustler". See it once and you'll never enter a pool hall without seeing those two at a table!
7. TV's "Great One" also made many a film in his career. His last, 1986's "Nothing In Common", paired him with a young TV actor who was half of a drag duo, but won consecutive Oscars. Who's the actor?

Answer: Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks followed Spencer Tracy and Jason Robards in winning consecutive Oscars; he won for "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump".
8. Besides the Oscars for playing a gay man and idiot, the actor can also boast kinship with a famous U.S. president! Who's the president?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Tom Hanks' ancestor is none other than Nancy Hanks, Abe's birth mother who died soon after the future president was born.
9. This actor got his Oscar acting for a director he knew very well...his own son? Name him.

Answer: Walter Huston

The father of John Huston (and grandfather of Anjelica) played Abe Lincoln in D.W. Griffith's early sound effort "Abraham Lincoln". Henry Fonda and Raymond Massey also played Honest Abe.
10. What film did Cagney win his only Oscar for?

Answer: Yankee Doodle Dandy

Cagney got his Oscar for playing George M. Cohan in this 40's flag-waver (he started as a Broadway hoofer), and Huston was his father, Rosemary DeCamp his mother and real-life sister Jeanne Cagney his sister (natch!) Huston would get the Oscar for "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (and son John gave himself his first role as the white-suited tourist Bogart bugs).
