Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I told my wife to give Toto to Miss Gulch. Who played me?

Answer: Charley Grapewin

Grapewin, born on December 20th, 1869 in Xenia, Ohio, was cast as Uncle Henry. Uncle Henry raised his niece, Dorothy Gale, on his farm in Kansas but he disliked that she always got herself into trouble. When Miss Gulch came by to talk to him and Aunt Em about Toto getting into her garden, he annoyed her when he kept repeating back what she said and getting it wrong. Miss Gulch told Aunt Em and Uncle Henry she had an order from the Sheriff to take the dog and have him destroyed. Dorothy begged Uncle Henry to not allow Miss Gulch to take Toto but he told her they could not go against the law. Uncle Henry took Toto and put him in Miss Gulch's picnic basket.

At the end of the movie, Uncle Henry was thrilled when Dorothy woke up after she was bumped on the head during the tornado. Grapewin was in the films "Sand", "When I Grow Up" and "Follow the Boys".
2. I told Miss Gulch that I would like to tell her what I thought of her but, since I was Christian, I could not say it. Who played me?

Answer: Clara Blandick

Blandick, a native of Hong Kong, had the role of Aunt Em. When Dorothy went back to her family's farm, she tried to tell Aunt Em what Miss Gulch said she would do to Toto, but Aunt Em would not listen since she was busy. When Miss Gulch came to get Toto to take him to be destroyed, Aunt Em told Miss Gulch that even though she owned a lot of the county, it did not mean she could run people's lives. Aunt Em went on to comment that she wanted to tell Miss Gulch what she thought of her but, being a Christian woman, she could not say it.

At the end of the movie, Aunt Em told Dorothy she had a bad dream right after Dorothy woke up. Blandick was in the movies "Roots in the Soil", "Lady in a Jam" and "Alice in Movieland".
3. With my crystal ball, I informed Dorothy that Aunt Em was distressed. Who played me?

Answer: Frank Morgan

Morgan, born in 1890 in New York City, got the role of Professor Marvel. When Toto escaped Miss Gulch's picnic basket and ran back home, Dorothy told him they had to run away since Miss Gulch would continue to look for him. When she ran off, she saw Professor Marvel and he invited her inside his carriage to look at a crystal ball.

As he looked in the crystal ball, he described Dorothy's farm and he told her he saw a woman and Dorothy realized it was Aunt Em. Professor Marvel informed Dorothy that Aunt Em was crying and that someone she loved broke her heart.

He hinted that she was sick and Dorothy told him she had to get back to her. Morgan also played the Wizard of Oz, a gatekeeper, a carriage driver and a guard of Emerald City in "The Wizard of Oz".

He was seen in the movies "Henry Goes Arizona", "Tortilla Flat" and "A Stranger in Town". In 1935, Morgan received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the film "The Affairs of Cellini", but he lost to Clark Gable for "It Happened One Night".

The only other Oscar nominee for Best Actor in a Leading Role that year was William Powell for "The Thin Man".
4. I met three friends in Oz and was hailed for killing The Wicked Witch of the East. Who played me?

Answer: Judy Garland

Garland landed the lead role of Dorothy Gale for "The Wizard of Oz". During the tornado, Dorothy went back home but it was while she was there that she got a bump in the head and went to sleep and had a dream about being in a land called Oz. In her dream, she was first seen in Munchkinland and the munchkins were thrilled since her house killed The Wicked Witch of the East and freed them from her rule.

As they celebrated, The Wicked Witch of the West appeared and told Dorothy she would get the ruby slippers on Dorothy's feet and also warned her she would get her and Toto. Near the end of the movie, The Wicked Witch of the West's flying monkeys kidnapped Dorothy and imprisoned her in the witch's castle.

However, Dorothy escaped and later on stopped the Wicked Witch of the West when she tossed water on her and the witch melted. Dorothy went and met with the Wizard of Oz and he told her he would get her back to Kansas via a hot air balloon.

However, the balloon flew off without Dorothy. Thankfully, Glinda, The Good Witch of the North, came along and helped her.

She told Dorothy that, in order to get back to Kansas, all she had to do was click her heels three times and say, "There's no place like home". This was when Dorothy awoke and realized her adventures in Oz were all a dream. Garland had roles in the films "I Could Go on Singing", "Meet Me in St. Louis" and "Girl Crazy". In 1955, Garland received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the film "A Star is Born", but she lost to Grace Kelly for "The Country Girl". Other Oscar nominees for Best Actress in a Leading Role that year were Dorothy Dandridge for "Carmen Jones", Jane Wyman for "Magnificent Obsession" and Audrey Hepburn for "Sabrina".
5. Dorothy slapped me right after I chased Toto and scared the little pooch. Who played me?

Answer: Bert Lahr

Lahr, born on August 13th, 1895 in New York City, was cast as The Cowardly Lion. The Cowardly Lion was the last person that Dorothy, Toto, Tin Man and Scarecrow met while they traveled up the yellow brick road. When they first saw The Cowardly Lion, they were terrified.

The Cowardly Lion saw Toto and chased him. Dorothy slapped him and told him he was a big coward since he picked on a little dog. He told her he was a coward and he did not have any courage. Dorothy told him that she, Tin Man and Scarecrow were going to Emerald City to ask the Wizard of Oz to help them out and perhaps he could give The Cowardly Lion some courage.

The Cowardly Lion went with them to Emerald City. Lahr also portrayed Zeke in "The Wizard of Oz". Lahr was seen in the films "Boy, Oh Boy", "Off the Horses" and "Rose Marie".
6. I wanted the ruby slippers from Dorothy. Who played me?

Answer: Margaret Hamilton

Hamilton, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, landed the iconic role of The Wicked Witch of the West for "The Wizard of Oz". We first met the witch when she came to Munchkinland and wanted to know who killed her sister, The Wicked Witch of the East. When Dorothy and Scarecrow met the Tin Man, the Wicked Witch of the West appeared again and also threatened Tin Man and Scarecrow.

She asked Scarecrow if he wanted to play ball and she threw a ball of fire down near him but Tin Man put it out. The Wicked Witch of the West disappeared and was next seen when she poisoned the poppy flowers right outside Emerald City.

When Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow, Toto and The Cowardly Lion went through the field of poppies, they all passed out except for Scarecrow and Tin Man. Tin Man asked for help and Glinda created snow, and the snow covered the poppies so they were no longer poisoned.

The Wicked Witch of the West sent her flying monkeys to kidnap Dorothy and she told them they could do what they wanted with the others but she wanted Dorothy alive.

When Dorothy was at the witch's castle, The Wicked Witch of the West tried to take the ruby slippers off of Dorothy but they could only come off when Dorothy was dead. That was when she flipped an hourglass over and told Dorothy that, when the hourglass ran out, she would come down to kill her. When Dorothy's friends rescued her, they tried to run away but The Wicked Witch of the West and her cohorts cornered them. The Wicked Witch of the West set Scarecrow on fire and Dorothy saw a bucket of water and used it to put out the fire. The water landed on the witch and she melted. The witch's cohorts were thrilled that the witch was dead and they allowed Dorothy to take her broomstick. In 2003, the American Film Institute ranked The Wicked Witch of the West as the fourth most iconic film villain/villainess out of 50 total villains/villainesses (she was the most iconic villainess). The only villains to beat The Wicked Witch of the West in this honor were Hannibal Lecter from "The Silence of the Lambs", Norman Bates from "Psycho" and Darth Vader from "Star Wars". Hamilton also played Miss Gulch in "The Wizard of Oz". She starred in the movies "Angel in My Pocket", "The Anderson Tapes" and "Brewster McCloud".
7. I was awarded a ThD (Doctor of Thinkology) by the Wizard of Oz. Who played me?

Answer: Ray Bolger

Bolger, born in 1904 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, portrayed Scarecrow. When Dorothy walked up the yellow brick road to get to Emerald City, she first encountered Scarecrow. She helped him off a stick and he told her he did not have a brain. Dorothy told him she was off to see the Wizard of Oz to find a way home and he asked her if the wizard would give him some brains. Dorothy stated she was not sure but, even if the wizard could not, he would be no worse off than what he was at that point. For his efforts in defeating The Wicked Witch of the West, Scarecrow was awarded a ThD degree and it was when this happened that he memorized a mathematical formula.

After he did this, he was thrilled to realize he did indeed have a brain. When Dorothy said goodbye to Tin Man, Scarecrow and The Cowardly Lion, she told Scarecrow she would miss him the most. Bolger also portrayed Hunk in "The Wizard of Oz". Bolger had roles in the movies "The Daydreamer", "April in Paris" and "The Harvey Girls".
8. I was the first one who Dorothy met in Munchkinland. Who played me?

Answer: Billie Burke

Burke had the small role of Glinda, The Good Witch of the North. When Dorothy first saw Munchkinland, she remarked to Toto that she had a feeling they were not in Kansas anymore. She also said they must have been over the rainbow. She turned around and saw a pink bubble coming and, when it got to the ground, Glinda appeared. Glinda asked Dorothy if she was a good or bad witch and Dorothy told her she was not a witch. Glinda remarked that the munchkins wanted to know if Dorothy was a good or bad witch since Dorothy freed them from The Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy again said she was not a witch and that witches were old and ugly. Glinda informed Dorothy that she herself was a witch. Dorothy gasped and said she had never heard of a beautiful witch before but Glinda answered that only bad witches were ugly. Glinda told the munchkins it was all right and that they could come out. Right before Dorothy left Munchkinland, Glinda told her to go to Emerald City and meet the Wizard of Oz and he would help her get home to Kansas. Burke starred in the films "Sergeant Rutledge", "The Young Philadelphians" and "Small Town Girl".

In 1939, Burke got an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the film "Merrily We Live", but she lost to Fay Bainter for "Jezebel". Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress that year were Beulah Bondi for "Of Human Hearts", Miliza Korjus for "The Great Waltz" and Spring Byington for "You Can't Take It with You".
9. I needed an oil can in case I ever rusted. Who played me?

Answer: Jack Haley

Haley, born on August 10th, 1898 in Boston, Massachusetts, was cast as Tin Man for "The Wizard of Oz". Tin Man was the second friend that Dorothy met while she traveled on the yellow brick road. At first, Dorothy and Scarecrow could not understand what he said but Dorothy made out that he said "oil can". Dorothy spotted an oil can and used it on Tin Man's mouth so he could talk. Tin Man told both Dorothy and Scarecrow that one day it rained and the rain caused him to rust for many years. Dorothy continued to use the oil can all over Tin Man's body so he could move. Tin Man used his ax in order to free Dorothy from the room in the castle where The Wicked Witch of the West imprisoned her.

At the end of the movie, the Wizard of Oz gave Tin Man a heart and told him that a heart is not judged by how much he loved but by how much he was loved by others. Tin Man got excited once he heard the heart beat. Haley also played Hickory in "The Wizard of Oz".

He was in the movies "New York, New York", "Norwood" and "Vacation in Reno".
