Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There were three "James Bond" films in the 1990s. All starred Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. The first one, released in 1995, concerned an attempt by a former 00 agent to hijack a space weapon using a stolen Russian access key. What 007 movie was this?

Answer: GoldenEye

When Timothy Dalton announced he would not return as James Bond, the part was given to Pierce Brosnan. It was Brosnan's first major film role since his wife, Cassandra Harris, died of cancer. He took time off to care for her after she contracted the disease. There are several interesting coincidences in Brosnan getting the role. The first movie he ever saw was a "James Bond" movie--"Goldfinger". Also, Cassandra Harris had a small part in the "Bond" film "For Your Eyes Only" and Brosnan met the producers when he came to visit her on the set one day. Brosnan made four "James Bond" films in total.
In addition to a new Bond actor, "GoldenEye" marked the first time that M, the head of MI6, was played by a woman--Judy Dench. In real life the head of MI6 at the time was also a woman, although it was not Judy Dench.
Deputygary always dreamed of being 007 but realizes the only thing holding him back is that he does not look very good in a tuxedo.
2. We've all had some geeky moments from our youth, but Todd Solondz took this to the extreme in his 1995 directorial debut. Which black comedy stars Heather Matarazzo as a 7th grade social outcast named Dawn Wiener?

Answer: Welcome to the Dollhouse

"Welcome to the Dollhouse" is a low-budget, independent film that won critical acclaim for its portrayal of a preteen misfit. Cleverly written, this movie will make you laugh and feel uneasy as main character, Dawn Wiener, faces humiliation at the hands of her classmates, teachers and members of her own family. In 1996 it won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Feature at the Sundance Film Festival. Film critic Roger Ebert included it in his top 10 list for best movies of 1996.
Squisher had to look up the meaning of the word "geeky" when writing this question.
3. This is a 1992 animated film from Australia, about a fairy named Chrysta who discovered that humans live in the nearby rainforest and they are there to destroy it. The film features the voice talents of Tim Curry, Robin Williams, Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis. What delightful film is this?

Answer: FernGully (The Last Rainforest)

"FernGully (The Last Rainforest)" is inhabited by fairies who fight to save their home from loggers and the destructive forces of Hexxus. The fairy, Chrysta, captures one of the humans and shrinks him. Once the human, Zak, sees how beautiful FernGully is he wants to save it.
Her grandchildren drug honeybee4 to this movie. That's her story and she is sticking to it.
4. The iconic London landmark, "The Gherkin", is built on the site of the old Baltic Exchange. That building was bombed by the IRA on 10th April 1992, which happened shortly after filming was completed for some scenes from which Academy Award winning film, that starred Vanessa Redgrave, Helena Bonham Carter and Emma Thompson?

Answer: Howards End

"Howards End" revolves around the Schlegel sisters' interaction with the social classes above and below them in Edwardian times. Margaret gravitates to the upper classes, whilst Helen becomes involved with bettering the lives of the working class Basts. For a time the sisters become estranged but eventually come to the same conclusions, albeit by different routes.

The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards in 1993. It won three: Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction and a Best Actress award for Emma Thompson. When speaking about the Incredible Casuals, arcane62 always quotes this line from the movie: "We're not odd, we're just over-expressive".
5. This movie, from 1998, is about two young outcasts pondering their destiny and the reason they were put on Earth. One of the boys was born small to uncaring parents and was convinced God had put him on this planet for a reason. The other boy, who was born to a mother who loved him but didn't know who his father was, and who wondered why God had put him on this planet. As one boy searched for a destiny and the other a father, they found the answer to their questions. What movie was based on John Irving's "A Prayer for Owen Meany"?

Answer: Simon Birch

The role of Simon Birch was brilliantly played by Ian Michael Smith. Jim Carrey played the role of Simon's friend, Joe Wenteworth, as an adult. The movie explores life and death, forgiveness and friendship.
Of all the lines in the movie, one of leelee63's favorites is: "What I want to do and what I do are two separate things. If we all went around doing what we wanted all the time, there'd be chaos".
6. The actor Kevin Bacon has appeared in over 40 movies. He has appeared in so many movies it is hard to find one he was not in--but we did. In which movie of the 90s did he NOT appear?

Answer: Shawshank Redemption

"Shawshank Redemption" was, in my opinion, one of the better movies to emerge out of the 90s. Although is was initially overshadowed by "Forrest Gump" and "Pulp Fiction" it now outranks both those movies in "AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies" listing. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins were great in their roles. It's one to watch more than once!
In 1996 Kevin played Sean Nokes, the sadistic prison guard in "Sleepers". In 1992 he played the role of Jack Ross, a prosecuting attorney, in the military drama "A Few Good Men" and in 1990 he played the part of David Labraccio, a medical student involved in a deadly experiment, in "Flatliners". During the 90s he appeared in over 20 movies including "Tremors", "The River Wild" and "Murder in the First".
helenat is from Ireland which just goes to show that Kevin Bacon's celebrity transcends country borders.
7. This 1998 gem is about one man's journey into the occult. Dean Corso is a rare book dealer. He has been hired to authenticate a very rare book and to find the only other two known copies. His quest through Paris and Madrid is filled with twists, turns and intrigue. What Johnny Depp movie am I looking for?

Answer: The Ninth Gate

This book is supposed to be the key to conjuring up Satan as well as giving its owner tremendous power. Johnny Depp plays the lead, Dean Corso, who is a rather sleazy book dealer, seemingly only interested in quick profit. His character evolves throughout the movie, into something much more.
Jimbob would never attempt to conjure up Satan. He likes to keep things casual.
8. In the 1992 release of the movie, "Unforgiven", Ned Logan (played by Morgan Freeman) carried a particular make of rifle that was popular during that time period. Can you name the rifle? (Hint: The model numbers on many rifles used to be the year the rifle was introduced).

Answer: Spencer 1860 Carbine

The Spencer rifle is first mentioned by Freeman's character when Eastwood recruits him to go on the mission. It is mentioned again in the final gun fight inside the saloon. The Spencer 1860 used a 56-56 rimfire round and had a 7 round magazine. It was used by the Union cavalry during the US Civil War. It packed quite a wallop...
Contrary to popular belief among the Casuals, Paul6012 was not born in 1860 when this rifle came out.
9. Kevin Smith wrote and directed a movie in 1994, about two convenience store employees. The movie also marked the first appearance of Smith as Silent Bob and Jason Mewes as Jay. What movie was this?

Answer: Clerks

"Clerks" was Smith's first movie. He had to sell his comic book collection to raise money to make the movie. The movie was such a success that he was able to buy his collection back. Smith not only collects comic books, he also wrote the first eight issues of the Marvel Knights series of "Daredevil". Ben Affleck, who played the main role in "Daredevil", also played in some of Kevin Smith's films along with Matt Damon.
The movie itself concerns a convenience store clerk called in to work on his day off. While working his shift he passes the time in wide-ranging conversations with the video store clerk from next door, plays hockey on the store roof, and muses about his life and his current and former relationships.
MoeSyczlak thinks his life would make a pretty good comic book.
10. In the 1990 movie "Look Who's Talking Too", what US comedienne voiced Mikey's baby sister, Julie?

Answer: Roseanne Barr

The movie was released in 1990 and starred John Travolta and Kirstie Alley. It was a sequel to the 1989 movie "Look Who's Talking". Bruce Willis was the voice of Mikey, Damon Wayans was the voice of Eddy and Carl Reiner was the voice of Mr. Toilet Man (the terrifying toilet who demanded Mikey give him some pee pee).
Roseanne Barr began her show business career as a comedienne. From 1988-1997 she starred with John Goodman in her own TV series "Roseanne". In addition to Julie in "Look Who's Talking Too", Barr voiced Maggie the cow in 2004's "Home on the Range".
albtucker's wife dragged him to this movie. That's his story and he is sticking to it.
