When Vianne (Juliette Binoche) arrives in the village, she rents a patisserie, and turns it into a chocolaterie. Her chocolates entrance and corrupt the once sleepy village. Vianne has a knack for guessing people's favourites, and when the customer looks into the wheel, Vianne asks her to try the pepper triangle.

The woman asks Vianne to put a ribbon on the box of chocolates she buys so that she can pretend they are from her husband. In response, Vianne gives her some cocoa pips to 'awaken the passion'.

Answer: Reynaud

Reynaud was Comte's ancestor, whose family has run the town for generations. La Comte is not an evil person, as he first comes across, but just wants to keep the peace in the village.

Josephine leaves her husband Serge, who runs the cafe, as he beats her. She moves in with the sympathetic Vianne and her daughter, Anouk, to help in the shop. At first, Josephine is treated like a criminal, but Vianne shows La Comte de Reynaud the bruises that Serge gave her, and La Comte goes on a personal crusade to reform Serge into a good man.

This is spoken by Roux (Johnny Depp) to Vianne, Josephine and Anouk in the chocolaterie whilst he is mending the door. Roux asks Anouk if Pantoufle (Anouk's imaginary kangaroo) likes chocolate, and she says that kangaroos don't eat chocolate. This culminates into a playful argument, which ends when Roux pretends to eat a worm to prove his point.

Roux, a water gypsy who comes to the town on his boat, tries to sell some of 'Ireland's finest' to Vianne. She politely refuses until she sees La Comte coming, then she changes her mind and asks a surprised Roux if she could have two.

Caroline's son Luc has a morbid fascination with death and an unnatural talent for drawing. Vianne asks him to do a portrait for her. Later, he finds out that it is just a clever rouse to let him spend time with his grandmother, Armande (Judi Dench).

Armande asks Vianne to throw her a 70th birthday party. The guests (mainly friends of Armande and the less faithful parishioners) have dinner at Armande's house before going back to Roux's boat for dessert. The party really kicks off with everyone dancing, and Roux serenading them on his guitar.

Roux leaves the town with the other water gypsies, and after he goes, everything changes for Vianne. She decides to leave with the north wind, as her people have been doing for centuries, but stays when her mother's ashes smash on the stairs. She is much happier knowing that she doesn't have to move around again, but still misses Roux. One day, she comes down to the shop to find him inspecting the door. "Still squeaks, does it?"

Serge is banished from the town by La Comte after he sets fire to Roux's boat, supposedly on La Comte's orders. Josephine takes over Serge's business, naming the cafe after Armande.

Vianne has a knack for guessing people's favourites and so is very annoyed when Roux deems none of her choices his favourite. She only finds his favourite when she serves him hot chocolate the day he returns to her.
