Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the Count say the Countess had gone?

Answer: Venice

Near the beginning of the movie, Caroline asked the Count how the Countess was. He said she was fine and was enjoying her holiday. He was rather subdued when he said this, and later on we realise that the Countess was indeed not on holiday. The Count did not want anyone to know the Countess had left him, as he felt too ashamed.

He was a proud person, and disliked anything out of the ordinary, so he hated the thought of the village hearing the news about his wife.
2. Who was very gifted at drawing?

Answer: Luc

Luc was the son of Caroline, and Caroline hardly ever let him out of her sight, as she had been extremely protective of him ever since her husband died. However, he was alone in this scene. Vianne approached Luc while he was sketching and asked him to visit her chocolate shop.

He did so, even though he had been forbidden, and met his grandmother, Armande. Caroline thought Armande was a bad influence on her son, and had stopped them communicating. Luc drew a portrait of his grandmother and presented it to her on her birthday.
3. What was the name of Josephine's husband?

Answer: Serge

Serge was a nasty man with a foul temper, he did not care at all for his wife. He would beat up Josephine, until one night she decided to leave him. She went straight to Vianne, the only friend she had, and described how Serge had woken up and tried to come after her, but she had already tied his feet together with his belt! She was hysterical with Vianne, and Vianne saw the nasty wound on her head from Serge.
4. Who is, according to Anouk, the captain of the pirates?

Answer: Roux

Anouk and her friends were playing down by the river bank when Roux's boats appeared. She ran to her mother to tell her there were pirates at the river. Vianne went with her to see them and they saw from a distance a man playing a guitar. Anouk said he must be the captain of the pirates.
Roux was Irish and called himself a river rat. He seemed to be a good person, and he fell for Vianne. He made it quite clear to her that if she made friends with him, she would make enemies with others.
5. Who hit Serge on the head with a skillet?

Answer: Josephine

Josephine had accepted Serge's apology but she did not want to move back in with him. Serge was very angry about this and became drunk. He broke into the Chocolaterie in the middle of the night shouting to Josephine, 'You stupid girl, can't even use a skillet!'
Josephine, Vianne and Anouk woke up but they couldn't prevent Serge entering the room. Vianne tried to stop Serge attacking Josephine, so he turned to her instead, pinned her down on the floor and tried to strangle her. Josephine grabbed a pan off the shelf and whacked Serge over the head with it! He fell to the floor unconscious, and Josephine said, 'Who says I can't use a skillet?!'
When we first met Josephine she seemed a very jumpy woman, stealing and muttering to herself--this was the effect Serge had on her. When she finally left him, we saw a gradual transformation take place, from a jumpy nervous lady to a beautiful calm woman.
6. What was the Count doing when Serge appeared, wanting to speak to him?

Answer: Cutting up his wife's dresses

The Count opened his wardrobe and pulled out one of his wife's dresses. He had just begun cutting it when Serge called to him saying, 'I must speak to you.'
They went down to the river bank and saw the party taking place on Roux's boat. The Count said to Serge, 'Something must be done, Serge, something must be done.'
7. What caused Caroline to be more lenient with her son?

Answer: Luc running away

After enjoying their chocolaty meal at Armande's house, the party moved to Roux's boat where there was dancing and dessert. Caroline had discovered Luc had run away, and saw Luc dancing with Armande on the boat. She caught Armande's eye, and they looked at each other before Caroline disappeared up the hill. We later discovered her fixing the old bike, getting it ready for Luc to ride--something she had never done before.

She was willing to give him more leeway as long as he promised never to run away again.
8. Who broke the pot holding Vianne's father's ashes?

Answer: No one

Vianne never had her father's ashes, it was her mother's. Vianne was trying to get Anouk to put on her cloak, but Anouk wanted to stay where she was, she did not want to leave the village. Vianne half dragged her to the top of the stairs where Anouk bumped into the suitcase in the struggle and it opened, causing the urn holding Vianne's mother's ashes to fall out and smash on the stairs.
9. Who is discovered lying on display in the window of the Chocolaterie?

Answer: The Count

The Count looked through his window and saw Caroline entering the Chocolaterie. He broke down, asking Christ what he should do. He went into Vianne's shop, cutting and slashing away at all the chocolate in her display until some landed on his lower lip.

He licked it, and then couldn't stop - he grabbed everything edible in sight, stuffing it all into his mouth until he flopped down covered in chocolate, and slept. Pere Henri discovered him lying there the next morning. At the beginning of the movie, the Count does not seem like a very nice person at all, he hates anything out of the ordinary.

However, when Vianne found him in her display the next morning, he seemed to have had a change of heart about her and her chocolate.
10. What was the real reason for Roux's reappearance in the summer?

Answer: To see Vianne

Vianne came down early in the morning and discovered Roux. He was swinging the door when she came down the stairs and he said, 'It just needed an adjustment. I hope it will be better now.' Although he said this, the narrator said they all knew Roux's return had nothing to do with a silly old door. We find out the narrator is actually Anouk.
